Plus E-Rod. And with our thin pen, you can even add losing D-Hern and Taylor.

Plus swapping Cora for Roenicke.

A perfect shitstorm indeed.

The Sox were actually lucky it all happened at once. (Although since they all went down with COVID except for Sale, it was not really a coincidence.)

No, we know some other things too, that are being mentioned in this last little flurry of posts.

What new revelations am I missing here? The only new thing we learned this winter is that even Cora said he stopped watching, too, last summer.

You're right, the revelations aren't new.

And you're right, it was the perfect time to tank. The only problem is not being able to watch and evaluate potential draft picks the past year. Because of that, some gems may just elude the first few rounds.

Seems like someone else knows how to get tanked.

But that problem is not limited to the Sox...

Right, but it just feels like this may be a point in this ownership/Chief Officer's history that they can't afford to miss with such a high pick. That is, until they show that they can afford to pay for transcendent talent again.

TBH, I thought Damon was more likely to get popped for BUI due to his boating lifestyle.

Scouts have their work cut out for them, that's for sure.

Trey Ball was a long time ago. They hit with Benintendi since then, but for some reason, people like to cling that one failure as if is now the only possible outcome.

And that was a really bad draft overall for pitching, with 4 of the 5 pitchers taken in the top 10 combining for 63 IP in the majors, with 62 of them coming from a below average Kohl Stewart. (And the other IP coming from Phil Bickford, who showcased his talent by surrendering 4 ER in it.)

Whoever they draft this year - and the latest rankings would have it as Miami catcher Adrian Del Castillo - it might not be anyone who will make any sort of impact for a while anyway...

And if they had selected Hunter Renfroe with that pick, they'd still be taking heat for it anyway.

HAve they?

His UZR/150 was about league average in 2019, but has been above in the 2-8 range since 2015. His DRS ran negative a couple years but bounced back last year in a big way. Now did that happen because he is losing a step or did it bounce back because he now has to (and clearly can?) cover more of right center since Betts was not out there for the first time in a while?

Yes, they have slipped since his prime years. I don't view the 60 game season as a valid sample size. One full season is barely enough to value defense for an OF'er, and the people who run UZR/150 will say just that.

Do you really think JBJ is the same defender he was 3-7 years ago? Based on a 60 game season?

I've never said he is not still a plus. I said he is no longer an "elite defender," and EHern is now better on D.

There's actually more than that. I have heard Chaz Roe rumors for example, but he is not on anyone's list of free agents...

Odorizzi looks like the only one worth going over the tax line to get, IMO.

Haven't heard any rumors of him being close to signing.

JBJ may have already passed on his best offer.

Looks like the Gardner-Yankee talks have resumed.

Minor league deals:

Todd Frazier to Pitt

Tyson Ross to SD

I wonder if we make a few minor league deals, soon.

Gardner back to NY for $4mill

What does this do to JBJ's price tag?

I thought he'd get at least $15M/3 or $12M/2, but who is left to pay him even that much?

Houston?

and Porcello?

Word is talking to the Tigers, but I don't count Porcello in the same category as Odorizzi- more like with Cole Hamels.

After signing Teheran, maybe the Tigers are out on Porcello. While Porcello may not have much gas left in his fastball, at least he is healthy. Hamel’s is damaged goods.

Houston?

My prediction is exactly that. I think Houston sign him to a 1 yr deal at $6.5 mil with a player option for $5 mil in 2022. This would provide him the pillow contract to have a better year, yet the security of a second season should be falter

Porcello's fastball velocity is, like his IP totals, unwavering over the course of his career, ranging from a high of 93.5 mph (in 2012) to a low of 91.4 mph (in 2011). Last year it was 92.1 mph. (Data per Fangraphs).

That's such a Porcello-like consistency.

Now go sign him, Bloom...

Just about right. Maybe a buyout of $500K to make it $7M/1 or $12M/2.
