Rankings roundup on Ronaldo Hernandez:

#11 The Athletic/Law

#13 Baseball America

#14 MLB Pipeline

#23 Fangraphs

Tampa has the #1 farm system. He was Baseball America's #56 overall prospect in 2019 before sliding off. Even if some shine wore off, this is still a headscratcher.

To get anyone for those two scrubs is a steal! With Vaz only having 2 years of team control left, boosting the catcher depth chart can’t hurt, although this kid will not be ready in 2 years- if ever.

True.

24 hours ago a best case scenario was they cleared waivers and accepted MiLB deals. I suppose there is always some concern about what we are giving up if Tampa wants them.

Sogard might be an interesting one, too. .405 OBP in A ball as a 21yo in 2019 is not so bad at all. Not exactly blue chip material. but shows some promise in that regard...

Fangraphs gives him a Future Value of 45, which places him in the top 10 in their Sox rankings, tied with Song, Duran, Houck, Dalbec and Seabold. Only Casas, Downs, Mata and Jimenez have a greater FV in their system....

The deal makes. Very little sense, but it shows how GMs view players and prospects much differently than others. Maybe TB sees something in these two- maybe an adjustment here or there that will turn them into their next gems.

I don’t see it, but I’m half blind.

The Rays need to fill a roster for little money. They need to collect guys like Springs and Mazza and hope one turns out ok. Hernandez was expendable to the Rays since they have much better C depth than the Sox do.

Those two guys weren’t worth a bucket of balls, so the only question is whether the guy that we got in return is worth half a bucket of balls.

Today he’s the #2 catcher.

Prospects with Future Value of 45 are never “expendable.” He may never make the majors, but certainly he could and should have been worth more in a trade than 2 career minor leaguers sitting on the waiver wire...

Last year FanGraphs had Ronaldo Hernández No. 15 on the Tampa Bay list:

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-54-prospects-tampa-bay-rays-2/

... and this year No. 23:

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-62-prospects-tampa-bay-rays/

Thanks. That makes more sense, why he's #14 on our list.

I still think TBR they could have gotten Mazza & Springs for nothing.

Top FAs Remaining (as ranked by MLBTR)

11. Jake Odorizzi

21. Jackie Bradley Jr.

23. Taijuan Walker

27. Trevor Rosenthal

46. Rick Porcello

47. Cole Hamels

Honorable Mentions: Brett Gardner, Shane Greene & Jeremy Jeffress

Could Bloom have done better by waiting to score some of these guys at rock bottom discount rates, or will these guys sign soon for reasonable prices?

He could still sign some of these guys at rock bottom prices if he wants to.

Hernandez is also on the 40 man roster, which means the Sox still have to DFA someone so they can add Marwin Gonzalez (assuming they add Perez when they put Sale on the 60 day IL).

I think TB's logic was that one or both would not last until their waiver claim. They are unlikely to miss Sogard, but I am surprised they added in Hernandez. Especially since they could still find free agent pitchers to sign to MiLB deals to increase their depth...

Bring back Bradley and Porcello?

Sounds good to me if the money is right. Porcello eats innings for breakfast and we have a fragile rotation. Bradley is sufficient in CF and we have nobody to play there.

Plawecki is on the IL. I don't think they have to DFA anyone yet. They'll have another week to decide about that.

@ChrisCotillo

Source confirms: Mitch Moreland in agreement with the Athletics. It's a one-year, $2.25M deal with $250k in incentives.

He'll DH for them and play some 1B.

first.
