@redsoxpayroll

Adding Ottovino's $9MM AAV takes Boston payroll to ~$205.17MM.

$4.83MM away from the first tax line.

Are we taking the whole salary?

It looks that way. They put him to the curb and we picked up their trash calling it a trade.

That trash (at his worst) is better than most of the current Sox bullpen.

Red Sox, making some nice moves the last few days, are still playing for JBJ. Mets, others in, too.

Trade Beni to clear space for JBJ.

Even if we don't sign JBJ, we may trade Beni to add $6M to our winter spending budget. We have some guys who can play LF but not CF, too well.

Renfroe

Chavis

Puello

All RHB. Where's the LHB for Renfroe to platoon with?

In 2019, Puello did have 6 DRS in CF in only 148 innings. That total alone tied him for 10th in MLB with 3 other players (including Marisnick) who all played 687 innings or more...

Only $850K paid by the Yanks.

Player to be named later or cash.....

What's a big deal....it's only money. We kept our farm system in tact. We also received Frank German, Yankees' #24 prospect.

The guy had a stellar 2019.

I think we got better. That's what it's about right? It's only a one year deal. Perfect.

We got a starter, reliever and versatile 2B. Nothing given up right?

I would trade Beni and sign Priller (?). I would give him away for $6M.

The Ottavino acquisition itself is not a bad move, and neither is acquiring German. It just depends on how it affects the budget going forward, if there is one (which it looks like there is.)

There's definitely a budget, we just don't know how high it is.

Ottavino's numbers last year do look bad at first glance, but he did give up 6 of his 12 ER in one outing (in which he logged 0 IP). So his 5.89 ERA for the season was a 2.94 in all his other games.

And of those remaining 6 earned runs, he gave up 3 more in one other game. So in his other 22 games, he only gave up 3 ER total in 17.2 IP (1.52 ERA).

He really did not pitch badly last year but instead just had 2 bad games...

I'm just comfortable with one year deals...if all goes to hell, Richards won't be back in 22 and neither will Ottavino regardless.....same goes for Perez...

I would expect additional Sox moves to make room on the 40 man. We still need a CF, whether it be Duran with his left handed bat, JBJ or another. There has been a lot of criticism of Bloom for his inactivity, but last week there were two moves and now two pitching moves. I fully expect Bloom to come through with trades affecting the 40 man and resolving the outfield issues. Beni is possible if someone will give value in return. Chavis is another and who knows who else on the current 40 man will be dropped in favor of making us a more competitive team in 2021 and beyond.

He's the closer until we trade him at the deadline.

Chavis hits righties better than lefties, but maybe we add a LH'd bat that's cheaper than Beni and can play CF (or RF better than Renfroe).

We can want whatever we like. I want them to go over the threshold, personally. But yeah, it's their call...

This just in:

Chaim says staying under the tax threshold is 'not a firm mandate'.

I knew it!

Bloom noted that they looked “under the hood” at Adam Ottavino’s 2020 numbers and believe the assumption of his poor performance in 2020 may be misguided. In particular, he notes one particularly poor outing against the Blue Jays in which he surrendered six earned runs without recording an out. Take out that September 7th appearance, and Ottavino’s ERA drops from 5.89 to 2.95.
And if the Queen had balls ...

Does this mean that you are throwing in the towel on Matt Hall, Kyle Hart, Colton Brewer, Marcus Walden and Jeffrey Springs. They are stacked with arms!

Amen brother.

Bloom had 22 outings and gave up 12 ER.

He gave up 6 ER in one outing, and then 6 more ER in the other 21 combined.

I’d say that one bad outing definitely ruined an otherwise good season...

Still not sure that means Ozuna or Bauer are walking through that door...

Why list guys not on the 40 man?

An exceedingly short season marred by lots of statistical anomalies like that. If he pitched a whole year, his numbers regress to career norms and FIP.

Just working from memory of guys that made me nauseas.

Brewer, Walden and Springs are all on the 40 man.
