We may focus more on building up the farm (Beni trade) and roster depth- both can improve our longer term outlook, while roster depth can help in 2021.

I do think we sign or acquire at least two players that will significantly help our 2021 roster and maybe beyond.

I am sure that building up the farm is the #1 priority. But as you said, we will still make some more moves that will help for 2021.

Let's start applying some of our farm to the majors this year as well. Downs, Casas and Duran have a shot as well as multiple pitching prospects. Will they see the majors this season and if so, who on the 40 man will be traded? Chavis, Beni, Dalbec? With that thought in mind, our FA acquisitions should be for relatively short term contracts. Hernandez for 2 is the latest hot rumor.

I’d be very surprised if Casas made MLB this year. He’s only had 7 plate appearances in high A ball, and that’s the highest level he’s played. I even think Downs and his 48 at bats in AA would be rushed. And Duran probably needs to do something good above A ball before he gets promoted. His BABIP-fueled A-ball numbers did not translate to AA at all...

Finally hang’em Chaim looking at pitching!

Looks like hang’em Chaim is graduating from kia’s to Chevy’s!

Clearly Bloom has been looking at Pitching all along. We reportedly made a solid offer to Kluber but he chose the Yankees for other reasons. No need to criticize Bloom for lack of widespread trying.

Boston sports writers think all of them will make it sometime in 2021.

If you get 10 IL pitchers it frees up 40 man space!

I'm not sure if any of those guys are ready. Keep in mind that I expect to be competitive in 2021, so I'm not really expecting to see any of those guys unless things go really south. Perhaps someone will surprise us though.

Hernandez is the exact type of deal that Bloom should be signing this year. I'm not saying that we'll win the WS like we did in 2013, but this is 2013 all over again in terms of the offseason.

Don't worry Larry, Bloom has things under control.

Great. A guy who makes Eovaldi look like Hoss Radbourne.

Richards threw 207 IP in 2015, and only 198 IP combined since then...

FWIW Garrett Richards tossed more innings than Nathan Eovaldi in 2020.

Martin Perez was the only Red Sox pitcher who tossed more innings than Richards last year.

Not exactly a high bar. Do you not read my posts about Eovaldi?

Who can resist a fun comp?

32-year-old Garrett Richards is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound righthander taken out of college in the first round of the 2009 draft while 30-year-old Nathan Eovaldi is a 6-foot-2, 217-pound righthander taken out of high school in the 11th round of the 2008 draft.

Their career stats:

GR DOB 5-27-88 187 G, 128 GS, 804.2 IP, 3.62 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 106 ERA+, 8.6 bWAR, 12.1 fWAR

NE DOB 1-13-90 188 G, 169 GA, 966.0 IP, 4.27 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 96 ERA+, 10.7 bWAR, 12.9 fWAR

Their 2020 stats:

GR 14 G, 10 GS, 51.1 IP, 4.03 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 106 ERA+, 1.0 bWAR, 0.7 fWAR

NE 9 G, 9 GS, 48.1 IP, 3.72 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 126 ERA+, 1.3 bWAR, 0.9 fWAR

Steamer and ZiPS project Richards with 2021 WAR of 1.6 in 139 innings and 1.1 in 70.1 innings while projecting Eovaldi with 2021 WAR of 2.4 in 149 innings and 1.2 in 90 innings.

MLB Trade Rumors predicts a two-year, $16 million contract for Richards while Eovaldi is owed $34 million over the next two seasons.

Having either one is bad enough. Having both is a recipe for disaster, which will come in the form of Chris Mazza starts...

I am assuming they are already up. Eovaldi and Richards could take down TWO rotation spots at once very easily...

Then perhaps it's time for the Red Sox to turn to the dependable Rick Porcello.

What durable free agent starter will fit into the Red Sox budget?

Just sign Odorizzi & Colome and end all this crap.
