Sure, but if one of those guys breaks out and becomes an All-Star, there has to be consideration for extending and keeping him as a core player going forward.

And if that happens, hopefuly it keeps the Sox in some sort of contention.

Richards has a team option already, so that one has been taken care of. (And he is not a guy you go long term with anyway.) ERod is really the only long term candidate from the option year guys...

Hopefully the Sox can get another arm (or two - hey, MiLB deals are a good thing) and a RF/CF and they might actually have a decent team.

If they get Colome and Ozuna, I would think this team could get a WC. And if things break right, who knows?

Why not?

We are not the only team with several holes to fill and several options still out there.

(I hope we don't trade him, unless the return looks like a clear win- doubtful.)

I'm not sure many teams want to trade a prospect AND take on a 5M contract for a guy who has a 621 OPS since 8/1/20 with poor defense and a feet that move slower and slower every year.

I agree. Make sure it's a LHB that can play CF and I think the offensive side of the roster is "good enough." I'm not worried about the "LHB off the bench" thing. Just need a guy to platoon with Renfroe.

$5M is less than what it costs to sign a similar player as a FA.

Beni's upside is pretty high, hence the reason many of us do NOT want to trade him. He is just now entering the normal peak prime years.

Many GMs are not locked into valuing players on just most recent numbers, as they should not be. (The sample size since 8/1/20 is not all that large.)

Do you think getting Ozuna is realistic?

I could see, if JD were a FA after 2021, but he's not.

If we sign Pillar, we platoon Beni & Renfore in LF- the position both belong.

If we sign JBJ, we get the lefty bat and the LF platoon, but I would think we might trade Beni, if we spend larger on CF.

Ozuna is not a horrible defensive OF. He actually had seasons where he put up good defensive metrics in CF...

In LF, maybe.

He's played 18 innings in CF since 2016.

He hasnt has a plus UZR/150 in CF since 2015 (+2.1) and a -1 DRS that year.

We need a CF'er or maybe a RF'er NOT another LF'er.

I think we know who is platooning with Renfroe.

As for a LHH CF, the options are:

via Free agency:

Bradley

Brian Goodwin

Billy Hamilton (S)

Jarrod Dyson

Jon Jay

Danny Santana (S)

Dee Strange-Gordon

via trade:

Ender Inciarte

Adam Hasely

Roman Quinn (S)

Not sure what other LHH CFs can be had via trade.

I will say I do like the LHH off the bench thing more so because I would prefer a Plan B in case Dalbec goes all Chavis on this team after he gets exposed. Mitch Moreland should suffice. Becuase right now, if Dalbec flummoxes, who plays 1b? Chavis and/or Ockimey?

If Dalbec fails, Chavis is called up and Dalbec is sent down.

I suggested a few trades for Adam Hasely. I'm not sure they want Beni and/or Chavis.

Some included Pivetta to PHI, if they included Velazquez who has just 1 year left.

I know you hate 3 way suggestions, but I had one with Vaz (and maybe Beni, too) going to PHI and Hasely, Stallings and Frasier or Brault coming to BOS. (PIT gets Abel from PHI and maybe something from us.)

Lefthand-hitting free agent Joc Pederson has played most of his MLB innings in center field.

Yes. Don't you? The only way it isn't is if Renfroe just takes over RF and Verdugo moves to CF, leaving Benntendi on his own in LF.

If Dalbec fails, Chavis is called up and Dalbec is sent down.

Exactly, which is what I would try to avoid...

Picking up a 1Bman mid May or June should never be an issue.

Also true. Missed him because he is not listed as a CF.

I am a rare one who likes Pederson and would not bother platooning him. He gets 5-10 PA vs LHP every year. He's not going to learn to hit them without getting more.

I'd be OK with bringing on Pederson for RF/CF. Wonder what his demands are. I'm calling Bloom...

Yes. That is when they ripen and practically fall off the tree at their peak juiciness...

I'm modifying my plan...

Some chatter from around MLB that somehow is not on MLBTR yet:

Marcus Semien appears to be close to making a decision. The Brewers and Twins are two of his choices. Go figure.

JBJ is talking to the Mets.

JT Realmuto and the Phillies are trying to get something finished. My guess? The Phillies are being kinda cheap here. But hey. they have never made a deal like this in the Sam Fuld Era...

Posted
Realmuto back to Philly.

The Wilson Ramos Sweepstakes begin!!

There goes all my 3-way trades involving Vaz to Philly and Stallings to BOS from Pitt.

The Cards seem to have the biggest need for a catcher, but maybe Molina returns.

I beat MLBTR by 34 minutes.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/twins-brewers-have-talked-with-marcus-semien.html

Both of these teams are probably planning on utilizing him as a SS, which apparently was something Semien wanted, for those trying to compare him to Kike...

I never thought it made sense to sign him to play 2B, when he's better than Bogey on defense at SS.

Posted

Some, including MLBTR, had C Hernandez rated higher than E Hernandez.

It appears C got $5M/1 while E got $14M/2.

Realmuto is getting $23M x 5 with Philly.

Pederson/Renfroe platoon in LF would be dope.

Have a strange feeling JBJ might go to the Mets.

From MLBTradeRumors: "while the Tribe likes the former Gold Glove winner, Pluto believes Bradley will be too expensive for Cleveland’s liking."

Query for the board: are the Sox now Cleveland of the AL East? Not counting Baltimore, of course... but beyond NY and Toronto -- who are obviously "all-in" -- there is the poor Tampa Rays... and Kiermaier, their centerfielder under contract for $35 million for the next three years.

Our payroll is 4 times as high as Cleveland's, so no.
