Is it too early for Varitek to be manager?

The fact that he has never managed a minor league team, makes that choice highly suspect.

I think he'd make a great bench coach or maybe even a pitching coach.

I've been one of V-Teks biggest supporters and fans, but I'm not sure he's up for this task.

If Bloom thinks he is, I'd be fine with the choice.

Can't name one until after the WS.

Cora was hired during the ALCS in 2017.

In fact, we had a poster on this very forum in the "Fire Alex Cora" thread that started that day facetiously (and hilariously) deriding him for attending a Yankee game the night be got hired...

I looked back. It was jad who made that awesome joke...

The cheating started long before he was even there. Cora was a scapegoat.

Both of these statements have been corroborated -- directly and indirectly -- by many quotes from former and current Astros employees. Fans or others not involved that still blame Cora are simply uniformed or choose to ignore the evidence.

For all we know, the Red Sox organization had an understanding with Manfred that was in the best interests of the MLB and Boston franchise PR to discipline Cora for 2020... and intended from the beginning to rehire him. However, Bloom never voiced the love for Cora that ownership did, and the only recent clue about AC came from GM O'Halloran a week ago; when asked if the Sox may bring back Cora, he said, "That's not even on our radar."

I agree with you, I was just throwing that question out there. I can see it going either way. I wish the current managerial transition lined up better with Tek's development as a coach. Catchers do make fantastic managers, however. Joe Girardi and Mike Matheny come to mind. He would be great at developing our young pitchers, so I think he merits some consideration. The Cubs hired Ross without any prior coaching experience, and that's worked out pretty well for them. I know our players would love playing for Tek, just as they do in Chicago

Kevin Cash is also a former catcher.

I'm telling you, current Rays' bench coach Matt Quatraro is definitely a candidate, if not the outright front-runner. Quatraro is a former catcher who also has minor league managerial experience and, and this is the most important part, is a Bloom guy.

You will be hearing this name over the next two months. But you heard it here first...

Yes, how could I forget about Wakefield's personal catcher

What happens when we don't hear that name?

You're probably right I'm getting mixed up with another story where someone couldn't be hired before the WS ends. I just looked at it this morning. Maybe it's someone currently employed by another org? IDK. Time for a nap.

@ChrisCotillo

Did Chaim Bloom accomplish his goal of being confusingly vague when it comes to Alex Cora? Absolutely. Reading between the lines, half the beat thinks Bloom's comments point toward Cora coming back. The other half thinks he basically ruled it out. A deflection well done.

What I was thinking was that CORA can't be named manager until after the WS because he has a 1 year ban. Woof. Mondays. You know?

Oh my God. Anyone but (as Carl Crawford in his greatest contribution to the Sox, used to say) "The Captain"!

Roneicke was let go, not because he did a bad job, but because he's and old baseball man (65 next season) and they wish to put in a younger, energetic manager who is well versed in analytics. There is a fairly long list of candidates and Cora is only one of those. By going away from Cora, Bloom would avoid the issue of the cheating scandal he was involved in. Bloom will probably wait until the ws is over to give Cora a hearing for the job.

Olney:

"The search involves one phone call."

"Cora is beloved in Boston. I don't see the downside when the suspension is over of hiring him again, they are not that far away from contending. It's a one phone call thing."

"If the Sox aren't on the phone with Cora they're crazy."

Eventually, you will come to grips with the fact that Pivetta stinks. He didn’t need a change of scenery. He needed a change of profession.

thats pretty funny.

Impressive post. No sarcasm intended.

The only thing about that quote that I dispute is the fact that we are not that far away from contending

We might be $60M away from being not far away.

In A700land, any player who isn’t a perennial allstar stinks and should retire.
or go to the Yankees for a multi-year deal. But mark my words, Pivetta stinks.

Matt Quatraro. Book it...

There seems to be a lot of speculation about Quatraro. Makes sense too, from Bloom's standpoint.

I'm still hoping they bring Cora back.

Posted
But he was still attached in the media and suspended. If the Sox do avoid him, it could be for PR reasons.

I tend to think that bringing Cora back would be great for PR reasons.

Varitek for bench coach.

Personally, Id like to thank Roenicke...he took a job knowing he was only a yr fill in & it was going to be a horrendous team, and he ended up with the pandemic as well. Thanks Ron...you kept it classy all season. Good luck.

Nice sentiment Donnie. I do not think Roenicke should be back, but he did a very professional job under the worst of circumstances. A big thank you and best of luck to him.

He should be fine for the back end of the rotation.
