If we let it, not going all out to sign Mookie could signal a long slide into irrelevancy.

Sox need to hang on to what we have, target pitching, and deal a few guys after they get back to normal... i.e. Beni, JBJ, & a few others.

Bogie, JBJ, Devers, stay.

We really Fd up letting Mookie go.

I think JBJ is likely gone after this year. Unless he is willing to take a paycut

Agreed. I think he is too. He is a fantastic defender for us, but offensively we won’t be missing much. Right now our main focus is pitching. We are currently 7th in hitting offense right now. With that kind of offense, it’s pathetic we are dead last right now. At this current rate, nobody will want to play for us next year. When you have f***ing Eovaldi as your ace, what do you think will happen

I don’t want to see JBJ go, but it’s going to happen I remember the announcers saying when we won the World Series, “This team is here to stay” Well obviously that was short lived. We went from first to worst real quick. We will lose some good players. That is the nature of the game.

JBJ is my favorite player, but there are several very good defensive CF'ers out there for a lot cheaper than JBJ's price tag.

Either he comes back at a big pay cut, or we move on.

JBJ at $11mill or Pillar at $4mill?

Which one gives you a better shot at Trevor Bauer?

Why would he take a pay cut to play with this mess of a team?

Unfortunately JBJ will have to take a cut to play anywhere next year. He's fading into irrelevancy.

(I think you're confusing him with the team ... whatever it is ... he's presently playing for.)

The team is awful, but JBJ is not exactly distinguishing himself.

He has a slugging pct. of .281.

Agreed. There are a lot of bad players and underachieving players on this atrocious team, which will probably get a lot worse before the season is done. I suppose management feels that since there are no fans anyway, there's no reason to put on even a remotely interesting show for them.

Because no one else will give him more?

Like I said, a very similar player in Kevin Pillar only got about 1/2 of what Bradley is making. After this season, it actually is extremely likely Bradley will be looking at a much much lower salary.

It's not like he is going to struggle to put food on the table. He'll still be a very wealthy man (and living a dream for most of us). But he will certainly be a wealthy man making less money in 2021 in whatever city, which could be Boston. But probably not...

Gonna happen with most Red Sox players this year.

JBJ was probably gone after this season, good or bad. He's quoted as saying he's excited for free agency -- something like what every player plays for (I'm paraphrasing). No doubt the concept was discussed with his good buddy and ex-roommate Marcus; they're both from the south, and smart enough to seek warmer climes to extend careers as they age.

Bradley is also another Red Sox player who never professed his unending love for Boston nor instructed his agent to structure a deal to ensure he stays here, like Bogaerts.

I’ve heard multiple times that players view free agency as something they have “worked for their entire lives.”

So what should the Sox focus on at the trade deadline?

Starting pitching is good. Although of Sale and ERod are back next year (a big if), it might not be their weakness. And it’s not like anyone will surrender an elite pitching prospect this year.

Bullpen looks pathetic going forward.

2b is a mess of utility players.

CF should be open, too. And Duran is unlikely to step in and fill that gap in 2021.

Thoughts?

I agree there won't be much if any pitching available at the deadline. The Sox strategy may just be to trade as many arms on the MLB roster as possible for any prospects. I'd be shocked if Bloom can get any player with more potential than Arauz for, you name it: Workman, Barnes, Valdez, Perez, Eovaldi (contract), etc.

Hoarding a handful of Arauz types is still more attractive than bullpen castoffs at this point. Quantity may eventually yield quality, whether a prospect develops into a regular or is someday used in a package for impact...

I think if they take back a bad (but not so bad) contract, like Kingery, the bullpen-deficient Phillies might be willing to listen on a Major League arm that has untapped potential but is simply not working out, like Nick Pivetta or Vince Velasquez.

FWIW, a trade of Workman for Kingery and Pivetta on the infamous baseballtradevalues.com simulator is acceptable, and a trade of Workman for Kingery and Velasquez is a minor overpay. A trade of Barnes and Workman for Kingery, Pivetta, and Velasquez is acceptable...

Unfortunately for a lot of players , by the time they reach free agency, their best years are behind them .

Trading away your best player and signaling that you are pretty much giving up on the season can have a demoralizing effect on the team . In addition to the shortage of talent, there looks to be a general malaise on this ballclub.

Serious Question;

What would YOU have done with Betts situation? Answer that, be specific. Talk to me like I'm the owner and you're the GM.

I am not taking questions or assignments today . I have expressed what I think many times already. What did the Dodger's GM say to the owner ?

I don't think the players mind that part so much. They still get paid. The fans and the General Managers might have issue with it...

I would have trade him. TRying to sign him was a failure, and inking him to the Dodger contract would have had massive implications down the road that I could ignore as a fan (for now, anyway), but not as a GM/owner. But I would not have rejected the Graterol deal, as we need the arms...

I wouldn't have tried to lowball him when he became arbitration eligible in the first place -- nor would I have ever even let any negotiations get to arbitration -- and I certainly wouldn't have presented a video of Kris Bryant to disrespect him.

I'd also have the foresight to recognize and invest in a special player who is always in shape and always productive despite his so-called dubious stature, like other 170 to 180-pounders who earned between 66.7 to 79.9 WAR throughout ages 30-39. Guys like Aaron and Mays.

Good teams need star players to build around who have the potential to play great for many years to give them multiple chances to get to the next level.

Could be a valid point on the arbitration lowball.

We'll never know if that made any difference of course.

But there's no doubt this could haunt the team a long time.

Now, now, now....You're respected here. There's really no need for that. Be happy your team is hundred times better.

all true, but you don't have to kick us when we're down. We didn't kick the Yan.... oh wait. I guess we did?

;)

This is just sad, & not good for BB. I look forward to the Sox rebuilding, so we can get back to the good old days of an always fun fight. I didn't like it when the Yanks were struggling, and this is just aweful. It's stunning that we've made so many horrible deals that have put us in a massive dugout for likely a number of years.

idk... Maybe it really is time to blow thus whole thing up, & rebuild over the next 5 years? First year in forever I haven't followed every game, at least on tape. Just sickening to watch.

Let's hope for a quick return to the best rivalry in sports!

Not to mention the message that sends to teammates and prospective free agents.

Mookie was a rookie the same year they pulled the same crap on Lester... and then Betts got to watch the Sox overpay for mercenaries like Hanley, Panda and Price.

Lester was probably even more confused, up by the time Boston had bid against itself for Varitek, kept Lowell, then overpaid for guys like Dice K and Lackey.
