The problem with acquiring Covey is he only seems to pitch well against the Red Sox. Against everyone else he gets hammered like a sorority girl on Jell-O shot night.

But at least we don’t have to face him now...

I was at a game last year at Fenway that he pitched 6 strong innings. He looked so good that I picked him up for one of my Fantasy Teams, and then he turned back into a pumpkin.

Arauz made the roster. I like his bat. I wonder if he will stick when they pare down the roster.

I remember seeing him here with the Quad City River Bandits (Astros’ low A farm team) a couple years ago; I think it was parts of 2 seasons. Held his own, especially considering he was 18-19 years old and 2-3 years under the league average age.

Anyone know what the rules are for Rule 5 players this year? I know normally they have to spend the equivalent of 1 full season on the big league roster. Do they have to be here for 100 games next year as well?

Laughable that the Red Sox 30 man Roster lists 3 catchers and 3 starting pitchers. Each Starting pitcher gets his own personal catcher.
And with ERod on the shelf, the Red Sox are carrying 2 starting pitchers.

No, just this season. Perfect year to stash somebody.

I'm all in on Arauz. I look forward to the day he's good enough that everyone agrees to one, consensus pronunciation of his name.

Last spring, I heard him pronounce it to announcers... who later disagreed.

It'll be interesting to see if any decent SPers become available after the roster cut downs in the next few weeks (decent in being better than Johnson and Godley). See below.

https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2020/07/boston-red-sox-opening-day-roster-analysis-brian-johnson-zack-godley-will-likely-join-team-soon-despite-being-cut-jonathan-lucroys-stay-could-be-cut-short-by-shrinking-rosters.html

The Red Sox released their 30-man Opening Day roster Thursday afternoon and -- as always -- there were some surprises. Pitchers Brian Johnson, Zack Godley and Chris Mazza were left off the roster while Phillips Valdez and Dylan Covey made the team, giving manager Ron Roenicke a couple unexpected options on his 15-man staff to start things off.

Ahead of Thursday’s deadline to submit the roster, Roenicke said that filling out the back end of his pitching staff was his hardest task. Behind his three obvious starters (Nathan Eovaldi, Martin Perez and Ryan Weber) and four obvious relievers (Matt Barnes, Heath Hembree, Marcus Walden and Brandon Workman), there were spots up for grabs throughout camp because three of the team’s key lefties (Eduardo Rodriguez, Darwinzon Hernandez and Josh Taylor) are on the injured list after recovering from COVID-19.

“The pitching staff was obviously tough,” Roenicke said. “We know that we have the three guys with Nate, Martin and followed with Weber, that we felt good about. With the players we had decisions on, whether we tried to think about an opener or we tried to think about a traditional starter for one of those games is how we came up with the rest of the roster.”

Beyond that, Boston had two spots up for grabs, with Johnson, Godley, Mazza and Covey looking like the top candidates to snag them.

Roster technicalities played a significant role here. It appears Covey’s opt-out clause with the Rays (which is how the Red Sox acquired him) called for him to be placed on a team’s 40-man roster if he was picked up, virtually locking him into a spot. To carry Godley or Johnson, the Red Sox would have had to clear a 40-man spot by cutting a player, but by holding on to Valdez instead, they were able to keep everyone in the organization.

Asked about Godley and Johnson on Thursday, Roenicke said both pitchers would “absolutely” contribute at some point during the season.

“That’s important,” Roenicke said. “I know they’re disappointed, but it’s important to have guys down there that are stretched out in a different environment than if they were in a season in Triple-A. We have to make sure we have those kind of arms that are backups for us because we know we’re not going to get through all of this without making some changes.”

Roenicke does expect a significant amount of roster movement around the league. He thinks the Red Sox are going to stay aggressive in their search for outside help after bringing in both Godley and Covey in the last week.

“Once we get into two weeks and we have to shrink that roster down to 28 and then shrink it down to 26 in another two weeks, I think there’s going to be quite a bit of movement this year,” Roenicke said. “Not with just us, but with everybody.

Maybe it's being in the presence of the Red Sox that makes him pitch so great. We can only hope.

The only Eastern team he has a tOPS+ above 100 against is the Yankees. Maybe he can be ok? IDK. He has a cool 305 tOPS+ against the Rangers in 3 starts.

Red Sox Claim Robert Stock

By Mark Polishuk | July 26, 2020 at 5:17pm CDT

The Red Sox have claimed right-hander Robert Stock off waivers from the Phillies, as per a team press release. Philadelphia designed Stock for assignment earlier this week.

Stock represents the latest new arm in Boston’s organization, as the Sox have also added the likes of Zack Godley, Dylan Covey, and Stephen Gonsalves in recent days in an attempt to shore up a pitching staff thinned by injuries, COVID-related absences (i.e. Eduardo Rodriguez) and opt-outs (Collin McHugh). The Red Sox have optioned Stock to their minor league training site, though it isn’t hard to imagine him getting a call to the MLB roster at some point, as the Sox continue to figure out their optimal bullpen mix.

The hard-throwing Stock has a 4.11 ERA over 50 1/3 career innings, all as a reliever, and all with the Padres from 2018-19. After posting a 2.50 ERA in 39 2/3 frames in 2018, Stock struggled to a 10.13 ERA over 10 2/3 innings last season as his walk rate and homer rate both ballooned, and he also hit the injured list with a biceps strain in September.

Stock was a second-round pick for the Cardinals in the 2009 draft, though he pitched for a few different organizations (as well as stints in Mexico and independent baseball) before finally reaching the Show in 2018. The 30-year-old has a 3.74 ERA, 1.54 K/BB rate, and 8.5 K/9 over 327 career minor league innings, working as a reliever in 210 of his 217 appearances.

Stock should not, of course, be confused with Robert Stack, although the pitching churn we're going to see this year may make us all think we picked the wrong time to stop sniffing glue.

While Stack was in that movie, technically it was Lloyd Bridges who picked the wrong time to stop sniffing glue...

Absolutely.

Not sure if the Sox will be able to get a claim on. But you don’t pass on Foltyniewicz after claiming Robert Stock and Stephen Gonscalves...

I dunno... some of us fans have actually heard of Folty; he may not be obscure enough.

But if you throw enough crap against the wall, hoping to see if any sticks... uh, the wall will still stink?

You are correct, if you throw enough s*** against the wall, hoping some will stick, you not only get a s***-covered wall, but a mess on the floor as well.

Foltynewicz makes $6.425mill this year and any claiming team is on the hook for all of it. (Now if he clears waivers....)

The money might be a factor for the Sox. Not sure they can fit him into the budget..,

Definitely. Need all the help we can get

The only question is - can they fit a $6mill pitcher on the team and still reset?

They can and likely will clear some salary in August as, let’s face it, they’re sellers. (Foltynewicz has one arbitration year left, so he’s not likely traded.). Trading Bradley would certainly allow Foltynewicz to fit. But other trade candidates like Workman ($3.5 mill) and Pillar ($4mill) don’t provide as much relief.

And those are the Sox big likely trade chips....

One pitcher will not be enough. Better to take the Dombrowski hangover this year and start building for 2021 and beyond. I'll judge Bloom by how he structures the team going forward and expect no miracles this year.

But... JBJ leads the AL in hits, batting average and on base average!

The Mets DFAd someone named Tyler Bashlor who is apparently a pitcher. He seems to meet Bloom’s criteria

1. Works cheap

2. No one has ever heard of him
