I didn't think this team would be competitive due to the lack of pitching. Some of it has been bad luck with 3 of our better pitchers being down with COVID, but it just demonstrated our lack of pitching depth and development.

I did expect the hitting to be better although some players had shown signs of weakness before and the loss of Mookie is also being felt.

We are totally out of it already so the time has come to see what some of our prospects can do.

In the field, we have a core consisting of Bogaerts, Devers, Vasquez and Verdugo. You can probably add Beni to the list due to his relative youth and prior performance. Arauz is showing himself to be a possible long term second base prospect. We probably want to keep Moreland for another year. JDM may also be with us for another year but is not a long term (2022) answer.

We have very few mashers in our lineup, whereas the Yankees are living up to the Bronx Bomber name with power up and down the lineup. Should we look for more of power hitters.

For prospects who could possibly fill our needs we have Dalbec, Downs and Durran. Time to get them some PT and see who sticks if any. It would be nice to know our desperate needs by the end of the season so we can hit the FA market running.

As far as pitching prospects, we have Mata, Groome, Ward, Houck and Song. Could they be worse than what we are currently throwing out there? I don't get the Sox management approach of sitting on guys that are either going to have to sink or swim in the near future. What ever happened to Felton. He came to the Sox as a player nearly ready for the big time but if anything regressed while in our program.

Dalbec is worth a shot. Downs is an A ball player and Duran has struggled in AA.

Houck and Mata are worth a try. Groome has barely pitched in the past 4 years. And Song is in the Navy...

Maybe Song could make some waves.

Houck is worth a try at what? He’s not a starter.

Casas has been added to the 60 player pool. To me, this is a sign the he is being fast tracked.

I also see that the Red Sox have acquired Christian Arroyo. I missed that, but he is also on the IL.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/08/red-sox-to-reportedly-add-triston-casas-to-player-pool.html

Per rotoworld, it is entirely possible his IL trip is more related to quarantining for clearing COVID protocols.

Either way, he is a former top prospect who has disappointed and is probably best suited for a utility infielder role, much like all of the Sox middle infielders not named Bogaerts...

Roster has to be down to 26 at noon tomorrow. Who goes. With Arroyo now on the active roster, I’m guessing Lin and a pitcher (there are too many candidates).

Trading Lin, Hembree, Brasier or Brewer would not bother me, either.

And it also won't dazzle whoever they get trade to...

Unfortunately said waves are likely to be off the coast of some Middle Eastern country. Song cannot even pitch in A-ball until 2022...

Maybe mid 2021.

@ChrisCotillo

Red Sox moves:

* Outrighted LHP Stephen Gonsalves to the Alternate Training Site

* Released RHP R.J. Alvarez

* Outrighted RHP Mike Shawaryn and removed him from the Club Player Pool.

So Gonsalves and Shawaryn cleared waivers. Gonsalves goes back to Pawtucket, Shawaryn stays in the organization but goes home. Alvarez is released.

I was hoping shawaryn would take Perez’s spot in the rotation after Perez is traded.

Why? Not getting enough punishment watching the rest of the staff?

We should have signed Buchholz.

If nobody has signed him yet, there's probably a good reason he's not here.

We don't want him mucking up our tank season with the occasional win?

@alexspeier

While Red Sox pitching prospect Bryan Mata left today’s Alternate Site outing in Pawtucket due to a lower body injury and had to be helped off the field, the initial diagnosis is a hamstring cramp. He’ll be re-evaluated tomorrow.

Not great!

Our 30 man roster is filled with players more sketchy than the sketchiest people on the fbi most wanted list!

It's worst bottom of the roster I've seen since pre-Duquette.

There's over 25 players on our 40 man roster I couldn't care less about.

Listed by 40 man roster seniority:

Pedey

Lin

Walden (said all along we should tarde him while his stock was high)

Brasier

Brewer

Weber

Chatham

Hart

Wilson

Aybar

Arauz

Peraza

Mazza

Plawecki

Brice

Springs

Hall

Covey

Godely

Stock

Triggs

Pivetta

Leyer

Kickman

Grullon

4-7 Marginals:

JBJ (due to being a FA after 2020)

Barnes (FA after 2021)

Eovaldi (Contract and injury drags)

Chavis (was never high on him)

Taylor, Munoz, Valdez, Dalbec (time will tell)

The only 10 I really care about are, and some may bolt after 2021:

Devers

Verdugo

Bogey

ERod

Perez

JD

D Hernandez

Sale

Beni

Valdez? Dalbec?

Promising.

Between him and Wong we might actually have a catcher for the future.

The team will still need utility infielders and outfielders. These guys can be old pros signed on one or two year contract or young and not too costly guys that can do a reasonable job should the inevitable injuries occur or regulars just need rest. I see guys like Lin, Arauz, Peraza and Chatham on the list and at least one of these guys should be kept for that purpose. If Chatham fits that requirement then he should be kept.

I put Munoz, Dalbec, Valdez and Taylor in the marginal category along with Chavis and expect we wont keep both Chavis and Dalbec on the roster next year. Maybe one or the other, whoever impresses.

JBJ will be a FA and will likely be gone so we will need a replacement. Will it be Duran or another? I have moved Beni in my thinking from core player to marginal. Is he the best we can do for left field? He has to demonstrate a positive trajectory to stay in the core. So the outfield is an area that needs work as well as second base.

Hang’em Chaim wouldn’t do something stupid like overspend to keep Bradley, would he?

All of which begs one incredibly obvious question...

Depends on what you consider overspending. I think it's possible that Jackie is re-signed, but not for anything close to his current $11 million salary.
