Maybe the only way I can get you to like or agree with me, is if I become the next Sox GM!

What do you think?

Without a doubt! Understand though for sure that it isn't about liking. I like a lot of people with whom i disagree. But, you become the next GM, I'm all in at least until the tenure ends and then it appears that all bets are off!!! lol I'll hindsight you to death.

Bloom is definitely not going to rush into a deal. Maybe he wants to wait the Padres out since they are more desperate after almost a decade straight of losing seasons and signing Machado last offseason?

I just wonder if Preller is leaking all of this just to show ownership that "hey, at least I tried. I was wheeling and dealing all offseason."

"Desperate" may be the most overused word of the baseball offseason. The closest thing to desperation may have been the Red Sox trade of Mookie Betts (perhaps to get under the luxury tax threshold ... or not).

The attachment of a top prospect or two to a salary dump of Wil Myers would not appear to be a move to yield immediate results for the San Diego Padres.

early results: i like Bloom.

He was hard to like in November, December and January. But at least he has been incredibly active lately...

Preller is getting his ass fired this year if he can't save his owner $$$ or having a winning team. That's more desperate than the Sox moving Mookie.

DD proved to be too foolhardy by being quick on the draw. I'd rather an introspective GM than someone who is just actively setting stacks of cash and the farm system on fire.

Unless you consider successfully following the directive of owner Ron Fowler that Myers be dealt as a result...

Oh I agree.. But as we had no real history with Bloom, it felt too much like the last two offseasons where every team rebuilt themselves throughout December and January and the Sox made no moves...

I've just seen how well the Rays have operated over the past decade or so. I assumed that Bloom would be fairly methodical so I was going to give him time to make some moves and figure out how he wants to transform this system.

FWIW the early ZiPS projections give the Red Sox a 29.3 percent chance of advancing to the postseason and the San Diego Padres a 51.6 percent chance of advancing to the postseason:

So the Padres should rest on their laurels that they have a better chance of getting into the postseason than the BOSOX who just traded a frontline starter and leadoff hitter to cut payroll. Is that the argument? It's been widely reported that Preller is most likely done if the Padres don't have a great year. No matter what happens this year, Bloom will be with the Sox next year. Seems obvious to me that the Padres are more desperate.

Overblown is the narrative that a general manager will make desperation moves "to save his job." The general manager is likely to make prudent moves with the knowledge his job is in jeopardy if the team continues to lose.

I have liked him since the Sox signed him, based on reputation alone.

Does this mean JBJ is gone?

I doubt it, but I'm pretty sure SD would prefer to have JBJ and pay $11M less in cash to Boston.

That doesn't mean it happens.

We might also trade JBJ to someone else, but with Verdugo hurt, I doubt we trade him.

I know this is the accepted narrative, but can anyone post a list of those prospects DD dealt away who have proven to be valuable MLB players? I don't ask this to start an argument; I just really don't know who those players are.

There hasn't been enough time for most prospects traded away to prove anything. Some, like Guerra, have proven to be vastly over-rated, but some still show a lot of promise.

One has "proven" he belongs, but it's still too early to judge: Yoan Moncada hit .915 last year at age 24.

Here's a list of all the prospects traded by DD and their highest ranking on soxprospects.com. (Travis Shaw was no longer a prospect when traded.)

1 Yoan Moncada

1 Blake Swihart

3 Manuel Margot

3 Anderson Espinoza

5 Michael Kopech

5 Jalen Beeks

5 Deven Marrero

6 Javier Guerra

7 Luis Ax Basabe

9 Mauricio Dubon

11 Shaun Anderson

12 Wendell Rijo

13 Logan Allen

15 Santiago Espinal

16 Ben Taylor

17 Ty Buttrey

18 Luis Aj Basabe

20 Bautista Gerson

20 Carlos Asuaje

20 Stephen Nogosek

Some are already pretty much sure busts, but let's come back and revisit this list in 3-6 years.

And I don’t mean that he’s at fault for every trade, just that he maybe spent a little too much of his prospect capital.

That seems to be a reasonable position.

Keeping a balance is probably the best way to go.
