+ Price = 31 mill AAV Eovaldi = 17 mill

Exactly, although paying $16M a year only saves us $15M a year (less than Eovaldi's deal), however trading Eovaldi would mean adding cash as well.

Betts is not a $400M player and he is certainly not worth that to this franchise. Frankly I think resigning him as FA is a pipe dream.

I don’t think resigning him is a pipe dream. But it is far from a given.

But when you look at the Sox payroll next season, if JD opts out as expected, they will have about $101mill committed in contracts plus a bunch of arbitration cases. Since we know they can go as high as $240mill, what large market team is better positioned to sign him?

Dodgers.

So what happens to Sale. If we are doing a rebuild or slight rebuild does he stay or go?

I suspect we keep Sale. We have sort of sealed our fate on that one I think.

Had we made this deal months ago, we could have signed a couple free agents and not been too bad, this year while still resetting.

this deal doesnt get done months ago. Bloom had to be patient to get what we got.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now we'll see if the FO is still so 'hot' to save another $10M by trading (or DFA'ing) JBJ.

no way. JBj is now tasked to lockdown the OF. very happy about this.

This has to be one of the stupidest move made by the Red Sox.

Mookie Betts was the best player on the team one would think they would've concentrated their efforts in trying to extend Betts but they chose to extend Sale and Bogaerts instead knowing and openly stating they could only afford 2 contract extension.

The one who believe that Mookie Betts will return next year dream on that what everyone was saying about John Lester and we all know how that ended up.

Once that trust and bond has been broken between player and an organization over one's value is a threshold once crossed is seldom reconnected again. This also an opportunity for Mookie to experience baseball outside of Boston which will be different I'm sure the fans will like him and cheer him as well as that he was liked in Boston.

The Dodgers might make it their priority to extend Betts unlike the Red Sox and if not he'll have plenty of takers I'm sure. One has to believe that the LA organization didn't take on the extra baggage for a single season of Betts and be stuck with Price.

i am seriously confused by some posts in this thread.

John Henry mandated a reset.

the only way to reset was to trade all of Price (no GM in the history of GM's would take that full salary) or trade Mookie's last year of arbitration ($27MM).

Bloom did a FANTASTIC job with this trade.

for those bitching about henry/bloom trading Mookie let me ask you this....would you rather have mookie betts for 1 more season coming off an 85 win season with basically the same team and then guaranteed to not be able to resign him next year in FA?

or

trade Mookie for this season, reset the tax as mandated by commander data, and have a very very very good shot at resigning Mookie next year in FA and have him lockdown RF for the next decade?

which do you choose?

Me? GREAT JOB C-BlOOM!

He'd have to be 1 or 2. Nobody outside of Casas is a consensus top 100 prospect in baseball, whereas Gatorade is.

MLB is a business and Henry is the boss of the Red Sox. Have no problem with Bloom functioning to the Henry mandate. Just don't believe signing Betts our of FA is in the cards because there will simply be too much competition for his services from franchises that AS BUSINESSES will assign more value to Betts than the Sox will assign to Betts.

I've wanted us to trade Mookie for some time. I have no issue with trading him and I'm glad Bloom has the balls to come in and trade off our best player a few months into the job. However, I believe by including Price he lessened the return. This is the part I have issues with. We were reset with just Mookie going.

I'd have far preferred we just dealt Mookie and got a bigger haul back with Verdugo (who I love us getting) and then hoping Price is productive and healthy and trade him at the deadline. I know this is a risk if his health fail, but I felt a bigger haul for Mookie would have made it worth the shot.

for those of you whining about the Sox punting/giving up on/throwing the towel in on the 2020 season....please allow me to introduce you to the February 2019 Washington National fans that watched their beloved Right Fielder exit the team in FA after an 82 win season......

maybe...just maybe...we shouldnt throw in the towel on 2020 just yet?

Do you believe that Mookie will go where he is paid most?

If you do, we've just positioned ourselves to be able to offer that. Whether we do is another altogether different question, however.

i agree 100%. i would have been very OK with seeing how Price did for a few months hoping he would be healthy for a better return for him. my only guess is perhaps price had to be included for dodgers to do the deal or FO knows something about price health?

I understand, and I'm glad he held out and got what he got.

He may not be done dealing, since now he has cap space to work with.

right? also, what wife isn't paying attention to her bank account/checkbook?

Mine. She just spends and spends without ever looking.

Yea I am inclined to think Mookie will go where he will be paid the most for the longest term and I am inclined to think that will not end up being us.

Agreed. He instantly adds value to a pretty weak farm.

Probably not, but we do outbid the big spenders from time to time.

The Dodgers are risk takers who's perspective on where they want to go has not changed though their ownership has changed somewhat. That is why I said the deal would be Dodgers from the start of the Mookie trade buzz. Easy for the Dodgers to talk themselves into a year of Mookie plus the Price contract as long as they could get the Sox to pay some of the Price contract. The Sox are certainly at this stage more risk averse than the Dodgers are.

I think the Sox are still wondering about their risk exposure on Sale at this point.

Current reporting is that the Sox are paying MORE THAN HALF of the Price contract. Geezus H Christ!

I think we count as big spenders, since we had the highest payroll in baseball the last two years.

At the top. He has already pitched in the majors. If healthy, he looks like he belongs.

Yeah the point on the FO not having faith in Price's health entered my thoughts, too.

Yes, we outbid everyone for Price, JD & Eovaldi, but only one was a mega deal.

If he doesn't break camp with the big club, he's a potential 6 3/4 years guy for us. If he turns into a starter, it's a good trade.
