I think John has slowed down as he’s gotten older. He used to be more helpful like showing up on Felger, and Mazz to help boost their ratings, and meeting Lester out in the parking lot. I just don’t see him doing that today. Probably send Sam.

But not to greet Mookie. It's raining, so Sam may be on the corner hawking ten-dollar "ponchos" (kitchen trash can size) with Red Sox logos.

I'll likely tune in just to watch the greeting he receives. He has all of the qualities and characteristics you want in a player plus being one of the best to ever play the game.

Amidst all the Mookie Returns articles is PA's interview at the Globe:

“That was my team. Just because I didn’t take an offer didn’t mean I didn’t want to be there. There’s a business component to the game.

We were looking for houses in Boston. We thought it was going to work out. I thought both sides were playing the slow game and it would eventually work out. We were negotiating, that’s what I thought.”

Betts said he never gave the Sox any ultimatum or a figure they had to meet.

“Normal negotiations, going back and forth,” he said. “Of course I’m going to stand my ground just like you should stand your ground. But I thought we’d keep talking.”

Betts was adamant that the Red Sox never offered him a deal worth $300 million over 10 years.

That never happened,” he said. “I know that’s out there and people say what they’ve got to say. But no, they didn’t do that. They didn’t.”

All along I’ve believed the “$300mill/10 year” offer. More I’m wondering what exactly Dombrowski did to keep him. Makes the whole David Price scenario even worse in my mind…

There has been so many stories out there then, and now, so what to believe is anyones guess, and who to blame. DD, JH, Mookie, or two of them, or all three.

As long as Mookie is playing baseball, and probably years after he is done, and goes into the HOF there will be woulda, coulda, and shoulda Mookie talk in Boston. Especially since he’s in town for the first time since he left town that’s all the more reason. Next to the Babe, Mookie is probably the 2nd biggest blunder in Red Sox history.

Agreed. What's #3?

Failing to send Fisk a contract on time- making him a free agent?

The Sparky Lyle - Danny Cater trade?

The Bagwell for Anderson trade?

The Cecil Cooper for George Scott trade?

The winter of '80-'81 trades of Fred Lynn, Rick Burleson & Butch Hobson trades? (Should we count the Fisk "blunder" during this same winter?)

That whole winter was like a bad nightmare.

We lost Fisk, Lynn, Burleson and Hobson in 3 months.

We got nothing for Fisk.

We got Frank Tanana and Joe Rudi for Lynn (and Renko)

We got Carney lansford, Rick Miller & mark Clear for Burly and Hobson.

(A couple years later, we traded Lansford for Tony Armas.)

Haywood Sullivan’s doing.

The thing is, he was a good GM at acquiring young talent until he wasn't.

The Sox got cheap after 1978.

I would believe Mookie all day before I would believe anyone in Red Sox management. The fact is that they traded Betts because they wanted to save money. This despite the team being worth more than five billion.

And then we traded Tony Armas for Pedro!!!

@PeteAbe

Betts reiterated several times that he wanted to stay in Boston. Nothing but good things to say about the Sox. Said he would recommend to any player to come here.

This really makes me angry with management.

Nothing but good things to say about the Sox, but what about Boston?

Well, BLoom wanted to make his mark with that trade and he certainly did.How he still has a job is beyond me, but I suppose it's because this is what he was hired to do and be: pay-roll cutting and taking the fall for ownership.

You seriously think this was Bloom's idea to "make a mark?"

Posted

Bloom’s feeling was that the Red Sox didn’t have enough of a foundation in the farm system to afford a huge contract for Betts and to build a championship team around him during his remaining prime years.

When the Red Sox extended Devers with a 10-year, $313.5 million contract that will kick in starting in ’24, Bloom expressed that the organizational foundation had improved enough to make such a financial commitment.

I joined this board right after the season in October 2019, specifically looking for a place to share my fear and outrage that Mookie may be traded -- and not play his entire Hall of Fame career for the Red Sox. I replied and disagreed with all the posts from Sox fans who care way too much about market value salaries for MLB players, and those convinced Betts was too small and would break down -- despite playing only great in all six of his seasons in Boston.

I agreed with the few posters who said to pay him what he was worth, and I disagree that the Sox got a good return for 12 years of a Hall of Famer -- which I believe was the Dodgers intention from the minute they pursued Mookie. I know all about the barren farm and budget restraints, and how Trout and Ohtani never make the playoffs. But I'm a fan, and I like watching great ballplayers, and also feel a team can win with stars more often than with a roster of average guys on average contracts.

Just wondering: if any of Bloom's prospects really do become awesome, what's going to happen when they want to get paid? Will they already be locked up to Braves' deals or have to be dumped for pennies on the dollar or allowed to walk for a draft pick?

You can't be gullible enough to believe that Mookie had to be traded because the Sox did not have enough depth in the minors. Really. Do you believe everything they tell you? He was traded because they did not want to pay him.

I kind of think like you so now that you have chosen to go down this road, get ready. You likely will hear many many times about how the farm system had absolutely been devastated and we just had to do what we had to do. The only excuse for Mookie leaving that might remotely make sense would be that he just did not want to play in Boston anymore. Kind of looks like that wasn't the case at all.

I agree with this, but the other part too is did Mookie really want to stay in Boston? He’s talking a good game now, but his actions speak a different story. I think both side’s actually got what they wanted.

Pretty much how I feel. I am a fan but I don't pretend to understand nor do I want to learn about the budgetary restraints that a multi billionaire must face. If he had wanted Mookie here badly enough, he would still be here.

Yes, it was clearly all Bloom. Henry and Betts were both begging him to get a deal done - each side rapidly conceding to the demands of the other. But Bloom chose to rise above theee negotiations, as the rife surrendering just muddled the picture, and rid himself of Betts altogether. You finally figured it out…

Also because they got sick of paying Price…

Absolutely. All this other stuff is just spin.

Is it impossible to believe JH and Co, just decided not to spend what it would have taken plus Hal Price?

For whatever reasons they had, this seems like the choice they made, and I’m certain it was not Bloom making the choice.

The choice was made before Bloom got there.
