Kimmi, it makes me shudder a little to hear you, who has so steadfastly maintained that the playoffs are a crapshoot, indulge in a hypothetical like that.

Kimmi is simply guessing. There's no assurance that we would have won a world championship. But the fact is we won 3 Division titles on the heels of 2 last place finishes and won a world championship under everyone's punching bag DD.

I'll take 2018 and move on to better future.

Henry should have never hired Dombrowski.

If he didn't, I'd bet that we would still have a WS Championship and there'd be a better chance that we'd have Mookie.

I'm happy with the DD move. It brought us three pennants and a WS.

We all knew he was going to blow up the farm, and that's exactly what happened. Some of the contracts were a mistake, but that happens.

I'm a more patient man than most, I'm happy for us to take a down year*, repair some of the damage and go at it again next year in exchange for what we had under DD. I'm just glad it won't be a process that's often repeated.

* I actually think we are going to surprise a lot of people this year.

Being a fan of the game, I have and will continue to support any GM that the owner of the team hires. Historically some do better than others. Assuming that they might operate on their own in any way without the strict guidelines of the boss is ridiculous. Anyone thinking that DD was some sort of maverick who operated without JH budgetary constraints, is a hypocrite if they indeed believe that there is a Red Sox budget. Whatever DD did had to have been done with JH's blessing. Some things worked and some things didn't. The hiring of DD was excellent. Bloom's likely will be as well. have to give him a chance and wait and see. I continue to be amazed by all of the attention a general manager receives here.

I think the surprise is going to be how bad your team will be. Vegas still has the Sox at 86 wins. There’s no way the Sox are winning 86 games in the AL East with their rotation outside of Chris Sale returning to 2017 level, Eovaldi channeling his inner iron man, Perez finding his inner Ranger fortitude and Johnson channeling someone else cause he sucks. I think you’re going to see a sell off. Bloom is no fool. He’s going to be a great GM long term, but I think he’s intent on replenishing the farm and the only way to do that is to deal off good assets and draft/sign well. It starts by dealing off short term assets.

It could certainly go that way. If Bloom does blow it up, it obviously will. I don't think that's route he will take however, and I think he will pull off a few more moves yet.

Baseball fans have been armchair managers as long as I can remember. "Why the hell did Darrell Johnson take out Willoughby?"

In the modern era where there are so many transactions and big contracts and payroll issues and we have so much info about it all, fans like to play armchair general manager even more.

He’s a patient guy who isn’t afraid to trade anyone on his teams. That’s how he operated at TB and he turned a pile of dog s*** into a perennial winner. He’s also not afraid to have a bridge year. He doesn’t panic and seems to make the right choice in all his moves. As an Yankee fan, it’s troubling knowing a guy like that is in charge of the Sox, but for 2020 and likely a couple years after, I’m expecting to like our end of the rivalry

yup. fans will also try and predict what FO will do. that doesnt mean that we would do the same thing. (DD decimating the Farm for instance or JH resetting the LT).

And in the offseason, there are no actual games to talk about. That's why we are so focused on the transactions right now.

Especially in the last couple weeks.

Because in December and January, the two biggest acquisitions were so noteworthy that we barely ever even talk about the "impact" expected from Perez and Peraza....

YOU COULDNT SUCK IT UP AND PAY THEIR SALARIES ONE MORE YEAR?????? Payroll will only be $50 million next year...WTF???? Really????

You only put one number is, and it could not be more wrong. Sale, Martinez and Eovaldi alone will make $63mill towards the tax (which is what matters) and $70 million combined. The remaining 37 players on the 40 man roster do NOT make a combined total of negative $20 million...

Absolutely fans have been playing manager since the game was created. They are part of the game - in the game. They are in the arena so to speak and most of them have played at the highest levels as well. Gm's of course serve a useful function. I guess that I exist as one of those old dinosaurs who really don't get all wound up over who is hired to be directed by ownership. When their names start appearing on the backs of jerseys, maybe I'll change my perspective. Maybe ... I'll continue playing along here and getting a good chuckle about the time and effort people spend comparing the qualities of these administrative heroes. How about a GM Hall of Fame - for all I know one already exists.

I think there are 4 GMs in MLB's HOF.

Theo would be the GOAT

didn't think he was a GOAT - thought he was a GORILLA!

on a side note, Tom Werner lives on a course about 5 miles from where i am during the winter months. I think I'll give him a call and let him know what is in the hearts of true fans. Any suggestions? i'll respect your anonymity.

Posting like it's the OK Corral.

Quickest post in the west.

you got an Earp in your background or a Holiday? my luck would probably be that of a Dalton.

yes, please tell him pitching, pitching, pitching. and Farm. thanks!

he will know it's me by the pitching x 3..........

One could also argue the reverse. Not extending Eovaldi, Sale and Bogaerts (although that extension is awesome. He’s only included because I don’t want to pick and choose.) then the Sox would easily have kept Mookie and my had to worry about Price either. And they’d be just as many pitchers short as they are now. (Since Eovaldi is such a question mark anyway.)

I really have no problem with either the Eovaldi or Sale extensions, though I would have preferred a year shorter on both extensions. Even without those extensions, I would not want to re-sign Mookie for 10+ years.

I was disappointed that the Sox didn't re-sign Porcello for the amount that he received from the Mets.

Exactly! Preposterous theory.

Like Sox brass did not know the serious backlash from trading Betts was coming.

Bloom did a magical job maximizing the return. He did better with the redo.

I know trading Price leaves a hole, but he was entering his last 3 years, aging quickly and had not been all that reliable for the last 3 years. I know people disagree with my monetary value placed on Price (thinking he's worth maybe $10-12M a year x 3 on the open market), but even if you think he will be worth $16M x 3 for 3 years, we broke even while adding budget space. I think we more than broke even just on the Price part of the whole deal.

Getting Downs & Wong over Graterol seems like a stroke of genius.

The big risk is Verdugo, but I trust Bloom's ability to correctly evaluate opposing team talent. He's a whiz at it.

I wish I could recite all the winning deals he made with TB, but I'm sure it would be eye opening.

Let's give Bloom some time and not expect instant success and 100% pluses on his deals. This first big one is a doozy, and he will likely live or die by the results of just this one deal, but I hope not. We gave up too quickly on Ben. I hope we learned from that.

I was a Bloom fan based on his reputation, before he even made his first move with the Sox. More to the point, I'm a fan of his balanced approach toward long term goals as well as short term goals, which is the way it should be. It will take some time to get the farm system back to where we want it. You are absolutely right that people need to have some patience and not give up on him too quickly. IMO, he's off to a very good start.

Let me rephrase then. I bet we would have still won the division 3 years in a row, and had a very good chance of winning the WS. You are correct though, nothing is guaranteed or even highly predictable in the postseason.

I was not at all happy with the Dombrowski move, but obviously, I'll take the WS Championship.

We need starting pitching depth. But I, too, am optimistic about this season.
