How in the world did the Red Sox take Verdugo knowing he has back issues and won't be ready to start the season? He is 23 and has back issues. Geeezz!

Why’d the Patriots draft Gronk? He’s got back issues!

It must be from all that time trying to hold the camera steady.

This doesn't bode well IMO for the future. I can see Verdugo's back being a continuing issue. Kevin Kennedy on MLB radio had expressed concern about Verdugo for this reason. Like I said I think LA knew what they were doing in dumping Verdugo. I still say Bloom got hosed.

The Sox clearly gave physicals. See Graterol, Brusdar.

Apparently they were not as concerned about Verdugo’s back as Kevin Kennedy is...

I really have no problem with either the Eovaldi or Sale extensions, though I would have preferred a year shorter on both extensions. Even without those extensions, I would not want to re-sign Mookie for 10+ years.

I was disappointed that the Sox didn't re-sign Porcello for the amount that he received from the Mets.

I’ve been griping about Eovaldi since before the ink dried. I had mixed emotions about the Sale extension. On one hand, to get him for so few years at that price, it almost screamed “SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH HIM!!!” On the other hand, this is Chris Freakin’ Sale...

You bringing up the Kennedy no sense about the injury being hereditary again?

Let us see who is right. Those of us who believe Bloom got hosed on Verdugo because of a whole host of concerns or those who believe the Dodgers parted with a top prospect merely to obtain at least one year of Betts.

1. The Dodgers primary trading goal was to keep Lux and May. Their farm is loaded to the point they can part with Verdugo since he can be replaced by Betts this coming year and then by the next-in-line prospect (DJ Peters?) in 2021 if they can’t extend Betts.

2. The Dodgers do intend to try to extend Betts.

3. While many have expressed a lack of confidence in the Sox medical staff, I don’t get why their opinion is valued less than the medical opinion of Kevin Kennedy.

4. So you think the Sox should hold Betts and get nothing but a draft pick when he walks?

The difference is Kennedy and (others I might add including Jim Bowden )have an educated baseball opinion based on years of coaching, playing and managerial experience. Moreover Kennedy has been around the Dodgers a long time. I trust a considered baseball opinion which has some merit. So far Verdugo has done nothing I repeat nothing to allay those concerns. In fact that which has happened with Verdugo only serves to heighten the concern rather than allay them. But you can go own with your rosy optimism. If it makes you feel good.

So he pulled the deal because of the Twins pitcher, but ignored Verdugo’s issue that everyone is aware of. Do you know how that sounds?

John Farrell also has the same educated baseball opinion based on his coaching, playing and managerial experience. Since that qualifies you to know more than medical professionals, should we contact him and get his opinion on Verdugo?

So you're going with the medical opinion of Kevin Kennedy then?

Remind me again, what does Kevin Kennedy do right?

I’ll take our medical staff over Kennedy 365 days a year.

I'd move to a planet further from the sun, just so I could take that medical opinion for even more days per year...

You can just sense some people are gunning for this move to be a bust so they can have reason to bitch at Bloom.

This makes me wonder if Verdugo had a procedure on his back. How do they know in early February that he won’t be back by the beginning of April?

I find it incredible that some people don't find it concerning that is taking Verdugo over 6 months to recover from a back injury that he suffered last August. Open your eyes people. This isn't a good sign.

Tell me why I should take the words of you or Kevin Kennedy over the Sox medical staff...

Spier just posted an article whose headline was about Red Sox concern over Verdugo's health led to them to sign Pilar. Looks like Bloom is already hedging his bets. Pardon the pun.

He’s adding depth. That’s what you do in today’s game. They’re going to have to load manage Verdugo for 2020, so having a platoon partner for 30% of the games is a smart thing. He’s young, even if he had surgery, it isn’t the end of the world. His talent is undeniable. You roll with the punches going forward. You didn’t get him for 2020 anyway

Did you read the article?

It does say Verdugo might miss the start of the season, but it also says he also might not. Such is the nature of uncertainty. It also says Verdugo’s back was a factor in signing a Pillar, but that all 3 outfielders hit left handed was also a factor.

So far, there is no real reason to be concerned beyond Dr. Kevin Kennedy and his questionable medical credentials. If the Sox signed a higher quality replacement like Yasiel Puig, that might be a stronger indication of how little they expect Verdugo to play...

Isn't Yasiel Puig just Albert Belle on steroids? :D

If either of those two guys was taking steroids, I don’t think Puig would be my first choice...

Congratulations on finding the article yourself see I knew you could do it. Of course I read the article.

Now since you are so good at doing research I suggest you also do a little on back injuries and how difficult they are to diagnose. And how several doctors can read the same MRI and come up with different prognoses. How the prognosis is highly dependent on the patience's description of the pain and how this can be highly subjective.

You will also find an article saying that low back pain experts have long understood that you simply cannot reliably diagnose low back pain with MRI or X-ray in isolation. And that premature MRIs are useless.

Oh what the articles on back pain don't say but what my physician told me after my automobile accident which injured my back that micro tears in my back muscles may not bother me until several weeks even months after the accident..

Finally we have no idea what the doctor precise words to the Red Sox were about Verdugo's injury. For example we have no idea whether the medical staff gave the team blanket clearance which I doubt or whether it was qualified in some manner which is more likely.
