Betts is arguably the best MLB player along with Trout. I will miss him but we have to move on. 2020 will be a bridge year for us. I fully expect a loaded wallet and bold moves by Bloom in 2021.

Good post Mr. Ortiz.

Now we'll see if the FO is still so 'hot' to save another $10M by trading (or DFA'ing) JBJ.

No, I think the reason they kept JBJ was because they knew Mookie was quite possibly gone.

It looks like a half and half deal with Price, although it hasn’t been confirmed. Price for $16 mil AAV is still a bit heavy, IMO, so the Dodgers took on more than Price is worth to get Betts. They also handed off Verdugo, who has 5 years of control, and Maeda to upgrade in the OF. Maeda to Price is a downgrade, but they needed to alter the payroll to a bigger degree, and Price was clearly a pre-requisite to make a deal. The Dodgers got better in this one and are hoping for a rebound from Price in both health and performance in what will be his first foray into the NL. The Dodgers also managed to sneak under the LT again

The Twins got themselves a starter who easily slots in as the #2 behind Odorizzi and comes with a few years of reasonable control. They gave up a top prospect, albeit one who is likely to be a reliever

The Sox got their salary relief. The paid down less than I thought they’d have to, but enough to get two top 100 guys of yesteryear (and now with Brusdar still eligible). They got far more for both Price and Betts than I thought they would have. Verdugo is never going to be Betts. But Betts wasn’t going to be around after 2020 unless the Sox paid More than the 29 other teams. They can still do that. But Verdugo adds to their team for the next 5 years. He plays good D. He’s a good enough base runner. He’s got burgeoning power. He’s got excellent bat to ball skills. He is likely going to be a fringe all star in Boston and IMO is better than Benintendi.

Graterol is the bonus the Sox got for Price and the funds going with him. This kid has flames coming out of his hand. Sits 99, tops out at 103. Apparently the Sox plan to start him in AAA in the rotation to (manipulate his service time) see what they have as a starter. But long term, this kid is a closer and one that’ll be effective. His stuff is devastating and he’s just learning to use it.

Overall, for 2020, the Sox just downgraded considerably. For 2021 and beyond, they gained much needed financial flexibility and added two players that will fit into the core of their next rising team. This is a good move for Bloom.

"much needed flexiblity" works off of an owner-centric framing of the whole deal. Bloom did the best he could given the mandate - and he'll probably do fine in the future. But Henry's conduct regarding the team since August has been pretty awful.

No point. We won't get much back for him and we're way under the tax now. We may as well just enjoy the last year of his defense at Fenway now. Unless he gets very hot and we can get something for him. That would be very nice.

What do you meany by 'his conduct has been awful'?

Be interesting to see if we trade anyone else. Might be In for a bit of a rebuild.

I don't think that's the plan at all. They actually have a little money to spend this year now.

One thing about Verdugo, he's not a Strike Out artist. He makes contact.

They save nothing if they DFA JBJ! They still have to pay him. LOL.

Apparently they could cut him and only pay 10% - those are the arbitration rules?

Not going to happen though.

Am I the only one who thinks this is an awful trade? We are still on the hook for half of Price's contract. I'd rather keep price than paying half of his contract to go elsewhere. Should of pawned off eovaldi instead.

Paying half of Price's money was as good as anyone thought they could do.

By the way...Could the Sox brass have done a better job of burying this trade?

- night of State of the Union

- right in the middle of Impeachment

- right in the middle of the Iowa caucus mess

- in the dark of night

Don't seem too proud of their trade if you ask me

Not sure why all the whinning is about. We did what we had to to sign Betts as a free agent.

If the sole goal is to sign Betts, we can now do it. Say $40M per year.

After this year, we'll be close to $150M. That's plenty of room to sign Betts for $400M over 10 years.

How do you build a team with one guy making $40M?

Betts is not a $400M player and he is certainly not worth that to this franchise. Frankly I think resigning him as FA is a pipe dream.

It's far from being buried, jung.

Shaughnessy and other media boys are hard at work today slamming the Sox.

You are right. Trying to bury it DIDN'T WORK

Your fellow Sox fans on this board feel different.

As a FA there are far too many teams for whom Mookie represents a better investment than he will represent to the Sox. We won't have to worry about just being outbid by the Yankees this time.

The best shot they had of keeping Mookie long term was to keep him now and counter his stated contract preference. Not convinced Mookie would have taken it. But that is the best shot the Sox had at signing Mookie long term. Mookie's actual value at least to me would be about 10/$333 which likely means 10/$360. Anything past that is highway robbery.

We need to give up this idea that Mookie is the second coming of Trout. He is not and he is not going to be Trout. That said, Mookie is a tremendously dynamic player and worthy of being on the cover of some team's media guide for 10 years. That is simply not how the Sox market individual players. In fact its not the way they market the Red Sox generally. Somebody is going to pay Mookie to put him on the cover of their media guide for 10 years or more and that simply won't be the Sox IMO.

The teams that might do that are far more plentiful than the teams that won't do that. The Sox, Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers and maybe the Giants simply don't market that way. Mookie is a candidate to sign with virtually everybody else other than the true poor relations of baseball, like the Rays.

Everyone is looking at this all wrong. The Red Sox traded Betts to the Dodgers to make sure the Yankees don't win the WS this year and the coming years. You have to love it!

I expected to pay more than half just for a bag of used balls, so getting Graterol was a huge plus, to me.

MLBTR...

Graterol was a consensus Top 100 prospect a year ago and remains on those oft-cited rankings. Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs has already moved Graterol to the top of Boston’s prospect rankings, noting the big righty’s potential to either function as a high-end starter or, if he moves to the ’pen, an elite reliever.

Sort of reminds me of Irsay's midnight escape from Baltimore

I don’t think it’s a horrible trade, but I can see unloading Eovaldi instead.

I guess Bloom figures 34yo Price won’t be as effective as 30yo Eovaldi over the next 3 years...

+ Price = 31 mill AAV Eovaldi = 17 mill
