Sugary rocket question:

So it's projected that the Sox will have to pay about 40% of Price's salary to offload him. Per the SIMULATOR, to trade Price for AAAA scrub, you'd have to pay 60M which is well over 60% of his remaining contract. Does the trade simulator just expect him to be a negative WAR player going foward if that's the case? Or is the -60M remaining value just throwing s*** at the wall? Would it make more sense if his remaining value was -35M instead because that's what it would take to apparently move him for no future value?

The Baseball Trade Values simulator probably takes into consideration the typical decline of an injury-slowed pitcher in his age 34, 35 and 36 seasons.

Or not.

Over the past three seasons David Price has posted 6.2 fWAR, valued at $49.8 million, while being paid $91 million, a deficit of $41.2 million. As Price ages in the next three seasons, the difference could grow wider.

Or not.

So you also are saying that basically a trade of price to cut payroll is of extreme importance to this franchise. So much so that we should even throw another talented player in just to rid this extremely wealthy franchise of of payroll excess. what is wrong with me for just not understanding this? I have heard all of the arguments as to why this is of the utmost concern too. if this is the direction that our owners decide to go in, it will cost them dearly.

I am just relaying what the blog said, without adding my value judgment. You put your own spin on my input.

In which league? I could see him faring better in the NL going forward...

I’m going to ask for something from every one of us .I want as like minds on Price think bigger think positive want more be positive .The deal is here now and we can see soon why Bloom was chosen .Think bigger .

yes I guess I did. After listening to all of the ******** being spat around here maybe I over reacted. If a quality pitcher is traded with no real return simply to stay under some luxury tax threshold, then yes forum will not have me entertaining it anymore.

John Henry obviously thinks the tax will continue to exist in the next CBA, and I'd say he's in a pretty good position to know about that.

yes he does obviously know so much more than the paying customers. But wait we are the paying customers right? Pretty sure that I'm going with what I feel is right. Inferior product = loss of fans. I have absolutely no sympathy for John Henry regardless of all of the curious interpretations with respect to the money that many here think that he should save to help us down the line. he is a rich man getting richer. he created this monster not his fan base.

Agreed. More likely in NL, but fairly possible in AL too, I think. But if the name Sale were substituted, I wd be more disbelieving.

Henry’s frugality isn’t the fault or wish of anyone on this forum. And even if anyone did want the team to spend less, let’s face it - no one in the Sox front office is checking this forum for ideas.

And that’s probably a good thing. We don’t want Wil Myers anyway...

MVP serious question ? Do you honestly believe that simulation has any and I mean any bearing on what a MLB team may put as a priority over another team ? It’s for fun it’s more Wizard of Oz vs Taxes .

I really have no clue about the site and if there’s value. I just know that people have been referencing it this offseason for some reason. As with everything, I don’t take it too seriously.

Rich Hill got paid 54 million, and he was 36, most he ever pitched in one season was 135 innings. Total 361 innings for the Dodgers. Price is better then that.

Hill's last contract was 3/48. You have a solid point there.

If Hill could get that much Price should be worth about 3/60.

Sox will probably have to eat some salary, but I'd rather it be like $15M rather than $30M. Until a move is made, it's tough for us to really know what the market is.

The market determines the value. Boston's problem is the rest of baseball thinks they are desperate to cut payroll. So it becomes a buyers market depressing Price's value.

Price has never been arrested at a football game.

Hill got 3-48, he didn’t earn 3-48. My bet is the Dodgers would have rather not have signed him for that.

What else is new though. Signings tend to be optimistically biased.

Yes but with the Ryu signing, Price is now arguably the best available starting pitcher, so that works in the Sox favor.

Stats the past three seasons for lefthanders Rich Hill and David Price:

RH 361 IP, 3.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 128 ERA+

DP 359 IP, 3.75 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 122 ERA+

Price's value is depressed due to his age, injury history and salary. Boston dumping salary is barely a blip on that map.

Now do the last 4 years (which is Price's entire time in BOS).

Really now!! So the Red Sox have not created a buyers market on Price further depressing his value.

He has value because of the laws of supply and demand. The Dodgers and the Angels need a starting pitcher and they have lots of money, and Price is now the best one available. Bloom is just waiting them out.
