It’s like he has a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, but since both are wearing Mariners’ caps and Ichiro jerseys, they often agree with each other about what he’s saying...

Sounds about right to me.

And he pitched 202 high-quality innings in 2018, postseason included.

Funny how the window you choose changes everything.

One person could cherry-pick 2018 while others could cherry-pick the 81.1 innings in 2017 (postseason included) or the 107.1 innings in 2019.

The three-year average should be the fairer approach.

Or not.

Every case is different IMHO.

Harmony claims to be objective, but he does like choosing his ranges to make Boston players look bad and Seattle players look good. If someone learned everything they knew about baseball solely from his posts, they’d think Seattle had at least 4 titles this millennia and Boston was clearly the team that hasn’t played in the postseason for the last 18 years...

The infusion of the Seattle Mariners into a David Price thread seems odd, but if you insist ...

A wide range of outcomes is possible for David Price as the lefthander enters the final three seasons of his seven-year, $217 million contract. Price could experience anything from a Justin Verlander renaissance to the precipitous decline of Felix Hernandez.

Here are the career stats of Verlander, Hernandez and Price at the point when each had three seasons remaining on his most recent seven-year contract:

JV 352 G, 352 GS, 2339 IP, 3.47 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 123 ERA+, 57.4 bWAR

FH 359 G, 359 GS, 2415.2 IP, 3.16 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 126 ERA+, 51.4 bWAR

DP 321 G, 311 GS, 2029.2 IP, 3.31 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 123 ERA+, 40.0 bWAR

And the stats for Verlander and Hernandez in the final three seasons of their respective seven-year contracts:

JV (2017-19) 101 G, 101 GS, 643 IP, 2.81 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 156 ERA+, 20.4 bWAR

FH (2017-19) 60 G, 59 GS, 314 IP, 5.42 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 77 ERA+, -1.2 bWAR

Again, a wide range of outcomes is possible for David Price, who is older than Hernandez but younger than Verlander (although slightly older than Verlander was with three years left on his contract).

SAN DIEGO -- In the weeks leading up to the Winter Meetings, much of the talk surrounding the Red Sox involved the possibility of trading Mookie Betts. As the meetings get set to conclude on Thursday, it appears that a different Boston star might be the one on his way

Per Mark Feinsand:

-The Red Sox have discussed Price with at least 5 teams (Padres, Cardinals, White Sox, Reds, Angels);

-His market looks more favorable in light of what Strasburg, Cole received;

-No consideration in the Sox FO to attaching a young player with value (such as Benintendi) in a Price trade;

-Taking on the contracts of Wil Myers from the Padres or Matt Carpenter from the Cardinals are possibilities;

-All Red Sox pitchers have drawn interest, but Sale and Eovaldi appear less likely to move than Price.

I like all five of these points, especially the middle one (the reverse of which I fear most... but which I've been assured by others that our new GM won't do). It sure sounds and reads like the Price market is heating up.

The best option for the Sox in a year where they’re dropping cash payouts is to prove Price is healthy, then deal him in season. Teams will want a discount right now because they’re not sure he’s healthy. If the Sox are convinced that this wrist issue is behind him, then they may end up shedding more of his salary once he proves he can take the hill

Wil Myers is trash. Price is still performing, Myers should be out of baseball. Worthless even as a bench piece.

Price for Myers works well as a salary dump.

Agree, also a Key injury even in Spring Training say to another Pitcher, could change things.

The Red Sox could waive Wil Myers and still save $17+ million annually over three years for luxury tax purposes.

It would not be a trade to improve the Red Sox on the field; it would be a trade to help avoid the up to $100 million in consequences for failing to get under the luxury tax threshold:

Especially if David Price is the pitcher suffering the injury.

Not sure how it happened as you post on this board, but clearly you are still unfamiliar with how Cora handles starting pitchers in Spring Training.

The most likely injury Price will suffer is a hemorrhoid...

So should the Red Sox endure the up to $100 million in consequences for failing to get under the luxury tax threshold for the third straight year?

Pitchers tend to experience declining production under seven-year contracts, especially when the contract is signed after the pitcher's 30th birthday.

In his four seasons with the Red Sox, David Price has posted 10.6 fWAR, valued at $85 million, while being paid $121 million. Over the most recent three seasons Price has posted 6.2 fWAR, valued at $49.8 million.

As a point of reference, Rick Porcello, who is three years younger, recently signed a one-year, $10 million contract after posting the same 6.2 fWAR, valued at $49.8 million, over the past three seasons.

You’re delusional

You guys are lost this market is hot for pitchers unbelievable you would trade Price for that used hankie

What would be the appropriate return in a trade of David Price (and the $96 million remaining on his contract)?

Price is a hot commodity. His contract, however, is not...

I think the break even point for Price is somewhere between him being worth $13M and $18M a year.

We could pitch in that amount and get a scrub.

We could take back a large salary and balance the trade accordingly.

We could add plus value players to improve the return.
