Puig?

Holt?

Vargas?

Pence, Pillar, Dyson or Maybin?

Milone?

A trade?

Not sure they need Puig since the got Verdugo back. Maybe if he's cheap enough?

I doubt they sped much on an outfielder, unless they plan to trade Benintendi...

Are there any teams looking to shed payroll out there? Take on some salary for prospects? Maybe get a pitcher and a prospect for a bucket of balls and take on salary...

Hire Chaim to clean up the budget, so he does it in one big move, getting that albatross off the deck. Now he has budget available to work with and will be one year closer to reclaiming Pedey's cost. If JDM departs after 2020 , then he has another big chunk to work with.

The next job is the much harder and longer one of rebuilding the farm system . That one still may hinge on draft penalties from MLB on the Cora issue. Either way the rebuild will be a multiyear task, at least 3 to 5 before significant performers will be in Fenway, or they might not.

I don't see how the process the Sox have now embarked on can show true results until 2022 at the earliest.

Mookie Betts
That ship has sailed. Mookie will realize that there are much better places to live and play than Boston and they will give him more money too.

It’s not that. Henry find another few outside guys to spend lavishly on after a few lackluster years.

Like who will pay him more?

and where are all these better places to play? This is Boston, not Beirut...

Beirut is nicer from Dec-March

Lot's of places.

Lots of places?

Two years ago, I suggested the only possibility of Price opting out would be if he wanted to leave Boston and was willig to take less money. Your response was "It's Boston. not Beirut." (We did both know Prie was not opting out. Even if he wanted out of Boston, his agent would have tied him up and kept him in the closet until the deadline passed.)

But NOW, lots of places are better than Boston to play in?

The Red Sox do have a chance to bring Betts back, simply because they are notorious big spenders who should have plenty of available budget and are freshly reset payroll. If Mookie is all about the money - and it seems like he is, which I don't fault him for being - Boston is absolutely in the running for his next contract.

What also helps Boston is the weak farm system hs produced only one other player fighting for chunks of the same pie. And once the Sox accommodate Devers, who else do they have who would ever approach $20mill any time soon?

Yes, there weather reports convey that thought. "Today will be sunny with only a 40% chance of bombs raining down from the sky."

Really? Did I say that? Can you provide a link to my post? I agree that it is not Beirut, but he was not going to get a better city to pay him more than $30 million/year. Betts will get equal or better money from better cities.

You really did. But come on. I'd have to dig back 2 years ago on this board.

Anyway, I cited my reasons why Boston will be in the running for Betts next off-season. I'm not sure who else fits that same description.

Certainly someone else will step up and try to outbid the Sox, but they are well positioned to stay in the bidding if not win it outright...

I am not as confident as you that he will be coming back. And that "it's not Beirut' line is a pretty good line. I just don't remember it. That's why people are always stealing my good material.

Seeing is believing.

The cliff is here.

JH wanted a reset.

The budget matters.

Time to move on and look forward.

People need to keep this in mind. The budget matters. It doesn't matter how much money Henry has, he is not going to spend without limit.

This is the reason why you don't give Mookie a $420 mil contract.

I’m confident the Sox will be in the running. But I can never tell what some other crazy GM might do...

That's how I see it. No way could we extend or re-sign Betts without a reset.

We might not be the highest bidder, and the odds may be against him ever playing for us again, but this was clearly the best way for us to set it up for him to be here in 2021 and beyond.

So long as the crazy GM is not ours, we are good to go.
