It appears, in hindsight, like we should have reset in 2019, but the plan I mentioned calls for a 2020 reset, since we reset in 2017 (a 93 win season, I might add).

It's actually not far from what the team has done in the past.

Paid tax 4 yrs (2004-2007)

No tax 3 yrs (2008-2010)

Paid tax 2 years (11-12)

No tax 3 yrs (12-14)

Paid tax 2 yrs (15-16)

No tax 1 yr (2017)

Paid tax 2 yrs (18-19)

Maybe no tax 2020

Since 2013, it's been 1-2-1-2 and 1 if we reset in 2020.

It's "there", now.

However, we have 3-4 holes to fill.

I would argue it’s not “there” until we know what it costs to fill those holes...

True, but we could go...

1B: Dalbec/Chavis

2B: Chavis/Lin/Marco

SP: Velzaquez/Dhern or "opener"

C: Centeno

I would add Chatham to the 2nd base/utility side as he can play short as well. I wonder about catcher and whether we might do better.

Yes, I forgot we added Chatham before the rule 5 draft.

We have no 2nd catcher on the 40 man roster, right now.

He's not listed on soxprospects, so I think you are right.

They have "acquisition" listed for the 2020 projected catcher 2 slot and the #1 AAA catcher slot.

The market for starting pitchers continues to develop as the San Francisco Giants signed righthander Kevin Gausman to a one-year, $9 million contract with up to $1 million in performance bonuses:

If the Red Sox trade Nathan Eovaldi, David Price or Chris Sale, the replacement might not come cheaply.

Ay, there's the rub.

Here's the analysis Alex Speier did showing how the Red Sox could save $100 million over the next 3 years by re-setting. That number includes $38.5 million in reduced payroll for 2020.

The $243.5 number represents the 2019 payroll number for tax purposes.

If the Red Sox don't reset*(assumes $212 million luxury tax threshold in 2022).

Year Payroll Luxury tax Revenue sharing rebate penalty Total

2020 243.5 19.61 6 269.11

2021 243.5 18.61 9 271.11

2022 243.5 17.61 12 273.11

Total 730.5 55.83 27 813.33

2021 243.5 8.32 0 251.82

Resetting is one thing. Resetting and staying competetive is another.

I don’t care if the Sox reset and save some cash. But if it means watching Mike Shawaryn pitch 30 games, all of them behind Hector Velasquez, while Gorkys Hernandez is trolling CF full time, I am going to hope some good movies come out this summer...

Updated tax numbers per Cot's and Spotrac.

The big difference is in the projected cost for minimum wage major league contracts. Spotrac's number is for 20 players @ 585,000. Cot's is only for 10 players @ 575,000. But Spotrac also projects a higher number for minor league players.

It's all a bit baffling, even to a budgie.

going back to the earlier pages when posters were ranking the order in which they would trade our current players.

for sake of argument let's assume all players are healthy:

1. JDM

2. JBj

3. Mookie

4. Price

5. Evo

if we get bounce back years from Price and Evo we have a much much much better shot at making a run at it even with the first 3 on the list traded.....

Early activity seems to indicate Price is likely traded. Current free agent dollars and his personal career goal of hitting free agency, coupled with the Sox stockpiling mediocre role fillers, is a strong indication Betts will be gone as well.

Bradley seemed like a logical choice, but there may be no need to move him, at least before July...

Trading JBJ at the deadline saves about $4M. Trading him this winter saves about $11M.

The indicators seem to be that Mookie will not be traded this offseason.

Are you objecting to my table comparing the numbers from the two sites?

They're moving targets. The numbers will change after the Red Sox sign Ryon Healy.

Or not.:)

placeholder for DGale post about the nerds from stat department sending memorandum to FO on who to trade and why

DGale bid us farewell and seems to have meant it, regrettably.

Excuse me kids, I have to bring my empty bottles and cans to the store. I'm on a Budget too. I'll introduce you to my wife, talk about a Budget.

I have no idea what were doing this Off-Season, she'll probably Trade me.

Oh please. Like she could get anything worthwhile ;)
