If they let him work, the problem is that in a big market team like Boston or NY it will be a lot of pressure to give results very soon.

To me, very soon means by 2021 or 2022. I'd be fine with 2024, if the team and farm look very strong by then.

If we keep the budget just under the tax line, we should still be fun to watch next season, even if not playoff bound. (I do think we can make the playoffs without JBJ and JD, if we spend the money saved wisely.)

Depends on what people mean by results. I'd be happy to see the farm improve year to year and the team reset for 2020 while staying at least somewhat competitive. A lot will depend on the performance of Sale, Price and Eovaldi.

I agree, and even without JD in the line-up, we should score a lot of runs.

With the budget space cleared by trading JD or seeing him opt out, we can replace Porcello and add a pen arm. We may not get "flashy," but maybe that is what we need to do anyways.

I wonder if JD does opt out, if he ends up getting as much money as he would have had he stayed with Boston.

I do not think JD beats the AAV left on his deal, but I absolutely think he can get more guaranteed money on the contract. He may be looking at what his prospects are after this contract and consider the possibility that he should take anything guaranteed beyond the amount on his deal already. I predicted awhile ago that JD would get a 4yr $75 mil deal on the open market and I think that may be spot on. The question for him is, can he beat 1 yr $12 mil when his Boston contract runs out.

Red Sox Interviewed Chaim Bloom for GM Opening

"ESPN’s Jeff Passan adds that “multiple sources” believe Bloom will ultimately get the job."

I had never heard this name before until the rumors started up that he was likely going to be our next GM.

From everything that I've read about him so far, I'm all in on this guy.

This would be a great hire if there’s no Lucchino type hanging over him. Hiring him, IMO, would be a signal of a tear down. But the build up would be pretty significant

No, he is the type of GM that will be able to keep the team competitive while building up the farm and cutting payroll. He sounds exactly like what the team needs.

I think o’halloran is the new GM and bloom is head of baseball operations.

Those appear to be the titles. How they in fact work together is yet to be defined. Does the GM run the budgetary side and baseball operations look to talent. Seems like the two overlap to a significant degree.

Don: Bloom

Consigliere: O'Halloran

Mouthpiece (lawyer): Kennedy

Capos: Romero, Scott, Ferreira

Chaffeur/Bodyguard: Cora

Soldiers: 40-man strong

I take it you've been watching "The Godfather" a lot lately...

The more I think about the Bloom hiring, the more optimistic I get.

I'm looking forward to some shrewd winter deals, an improved draft and some better IFA signings.

We may even see a surprising team in 2020.

We well may. (Alas, we saw a surprising team in 2019 too!)

Maybe next year the Yanks will have the sort of surprise we had this year.

The Yankees are carrying a big payroll and need starting pitching. They certainly had underperforming contracts. I would expect Cashman to make moves in the off season but he will be contrained unless the Yankees want to exceed the second tier.

Our pill will start to be swallowed in 2020 and depending on how well Bloom and the front office stay with the plan, I expect we will stay competitive. Quite a bit will depend on Sale and Price. Anything from Eovaldi will be a bonus.

I expect the Yanks to be better due to it being almost impossible to match last year's injuries, and yes, I think Cashman gets an ace, this off season.

I'm hoping they fall flat, but it would be against steep odds.

Yankees need SP. Red Sox will need outfielders.

Price for Ellsbury anyone?

Price has a much better chance of adding value to a team, but he's owed $66M/3. Ellsbury is burnt toast, but he's only owed $26M/1 or $42M/2.

I'd do it. I'd even throw in Hembree, Johnson or Velazquez. (Maybe 2, if they want 'em.)

It does make sense.

Granted, Ellsbury is viewed as a traitor for refusing to sign with Boston and then going to NYY, but the reality is he was just a guy that we all cheered for for 6 seasons who simply refused extensions because he was deadset on testing free agency. Sound like anyone else?

I was happy to see him sign for more than double what I thought he was worth.

I never viewed him as a traitor. He was like our spy inflicting damage to the Yankee infrastructure.

Given that Ellsbury will probably never take the field again, I don't view him as an outfielder.

I think the Yanks are recovering most of Ellsbury's pay through insurance as long as he 'can't play'. So that significantly reduces their financial incentive to move him.

True.

Do we know, if the Sox have insurance on Price?
