That one was Ben's.

His follow up deal of trading Melancon for Hanrahan and Holt certainly yielded positive results. Not from Hanrahan, however...

Second base is not a top priority for the Red Sox but Jedd Gyorko just joined Scooter Gennette, Starlin Castro, Howie Kendrick, Asdrubal Cabrera, Mike Moustakas, Ben Zobrist and Brian Dozier as potential low-cost targets.

I’m not so sure Moustakas is low cost. If he was, Milwaukee would he retaining him.

Zobrist is 38 or 39 or more. He might retire. Possibly involuntarily.

I could see Gennett or Dozier or the massively underrated Gyorko on Bloom’s radar. Gyorko might even be a 1b option...

True, but Melancon became a damn good pitcher for a while, afterwards.

If he has a good spring training camp, should we not give Chatham a shot at playing second for us and move Chavis to first base?

IMO, Chavis does not hit well enough to play 1B. He may not field well enough to play 2B.

My guess is we let the whole mix fight it out and maybe add a cheap slugging 1Bman who might platoon.

I am excited for our new GM. He'll make some value acquisitions instead of simply throwing money at players, and I'm not just talking about DD either. Sox GM's have history of throwing away $8-$12M. Can't do that in Tampa.

I would think of Chatham as a utility player with Chavis at 2nd and Dalbec at first (supplemented by a veteran left handed first baseman who could be Moreland)

The Robo Ump to me seems to kill the authenticity of the game. Its a baseball game based on tradition. .

we can go back to balls that bounce over the fence = homeruns

no more catchers gear/masks

no black or latino players

no more DH

Tradition!

The naming of the automatic strike detector as a robo ump is unfortunate. It is only a tool for the plate umpire that will allow for consistency and accuracy. Yhe current umpire calling balls and strikes means the strike zone varies with the umpire and to some extent whether he blinks or is upset with a particular player.

Actually Latino players were always allowed. Many African American players pretended to be Latino.

But you left out removing foul poles and free agency, bringing back Sunday double headers (which should actually happen IMO), and allowing spitballs and steroids...

With rule 5 not far away and some cheap free agent signings on the horizon, I wonder who will be the first to go from the 40 man roster. We could deal some players, especially ones without options remaining, like Johnson & Hembree, but he is my list of most likely to be DFA'd, non-tendered or traded:

Trevor Kelly

Denyi Reyes

Jhoulys Chacin

Sandy Leon (maybe non tendered then re-signed for cheap)

Sam Travis

Mike Shawaryn

Ryan Weber

Colten Brewer

Ryan Brasier

Hector Velazquez

Brian Johnson

Heath Hembree

Chacin elected free agency late last week (not that it really matters).

Also that Cla Meredith/Doug Mirabelli disaster...

That was a pure panic move. Exhibit A as to why you don't panic in baseball.

Somebody had to catch Wake. It was a horror show out there, but yes, panic.

FTR, I was very pleased when I heard they were bringing back Mirabelli.

But still.

I thought it was silly. Wakefield’s issues were related to run support. Doug Mirabelli is not the solution for poor run support...

Josh Bard had 4 passed balls in Wake's previous start (leading to 2 separate un earned runs) prior to us getting Mirabelli.

In the game before that a passed ball let a runner score from 3B.

Before that, 2 passed balls (2 in one inning) allowing a runner to score.

There were 3 PBs in Wake's first start that year.

Come on! 10 PBs in 5 starts was the major factor.

Wake was actually pitching okay, but the PBs were killing him/us.

I doubt that happens, but I don't expect any top 25 signings.

Someone on MLB.com handicapping the odds of who'll sign Strasburg listed Boston as third most likely, behind Washington and the Yankees. What, did Bloom do some spelunking inside the Green Monster and uncover the purse of the Bambino?
