our starter went 5 innings and gave up only 1 run. 1.80 ERA

relievers 11.1 innings and gave up 3 runs. 2.38 ERA

1.80 > 2.38

Price > Relievers

how do some of you not see this. smh.......

Stunningly good numbers. I finally get it. Thank you so much. Price should have pitched all 9 innings. What could be simpler than that?

Come to think of it, why is 1/3 of the active roster relief pitchers--8 guys-- when we have guys like Price to go the distance? And isn't that the way it used to be in MLB, guys routinely pitching complete games? Too much mollycoddling going on these days.

Maxie , I don't think anyone is suggesting that Price should have pitched a complete game . Just that it is a little odd that he would come out after only 73 pitches . And , win or lose , it is a little odd .

You are darn right it's odd and was in fact asked about after the game. Cora kind of waffled and said, given Price's last start, it was important to "take care of him a little." Price himself admitted he had wanted to be able to do more and that the decision not to was "not on Alex."

All this hollaballo about pulling Price after 5 would make more sense if the bullpen had not gone the next 7 innings, giving up 1 run and had not the 1 run been at the expense of Workman, whose ERA is 1.82.

In other words, I'm not just defending Cora. I'm arguing he was masterful last night and the carping critics don't know what the heck they are talking about.

Minnesota is playing .667 ball this year after playing .481 ball last year, so it's obvious that Baldelli has been the supreme managerial maestro this year!

We lost to one of the best teams in baseball in 17 innings! Just stop man.

Well said Max.

Let me dummy down what Max said..... OUR f***ING BULLPEN WENT NEARLY 12 INNINGS AND GAVE UP 3 RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Against the best offensive team in the league. That is NOT the wrong decision by Cora. Jesus....... How do some of you not see this. smh........

Yes! Max was 100% right and yes, 12 IP with 3 ERs is a plus not a minus.

We had a 1 run lead 3 times last night. We were down 1 run just once.

It's been all about the timing, this year.

The funniest part of his post was the 1.80 ERA. Had Price gone 9 IP at a 1.80 ERA clip, we'd have still been tied 2-2 after 9.

The pen was not the reason we lost- not even close.

Lol exactly, I was thinking the same thing. When people have their opinions they stick to them no matter how dumb they are I guess. I am guilty of this too. I didn't want to sign Kimbrel back for the life of me..... Might have been the wrong decision lol.

Had we known the price would drop this much, and that Pearce would struggle, we might have been able to afford Kimbrel and stayed just under the max line with no Pearce, Thornburg and ?? Holt ??

I still think we made the right choice.

We can spend our precious budget space on pro-rated contracts this summer.

Ya fair point. I am curious how Kimbrel will do with the Cubs down the stretch....

Let's not kid ourselves . Our bullpen has 16 saves and 14 blown saves . A 53 % success rate . This is one of the worst in MLB. That is a cold , hard fact . No matter how you spin it or how much you may not want to believe it , it is a fact .

Nobody is arguing that. The argument is the bullpen the last couple weeks has been much (MUCH) better and the loss was not their fault last night.

Last night really shows that sometimes blown saves are just bad luck, similar to losses for starting pitchers.

Agreed! I swear the last couple times I have seen Houston play Osuna has blown saves. And he is considered one of the best closers in baseball.... Or was..... Maybe he is having a down year.

As much as I’ve been calling for another bullpen arm, the Sox bullpen went 11 innings last night and only gave up 2 runs against a very good team. It was an impressive game for a lot of them.

Yes they had 2 blown saves. But it never should have come to that. The Sox hitting was completely absent. No bullpen should be required to do what the Sox pen did last night...

Amen, brother Notin. Great post.

The Twins might be the real deal ,but I am not entirely sold quite yet . I wonder how well they would do if they switched divisions with Toronto .

We still treated them like our bitch earlier in the year. The twins have always been and will always be owned by the Yankees

I think they're a good team, but not as good as their record says, and they don't scare me AT ALL in the playoffs.

Two of three against a division leader at their park is a very impressive series. While we did that, the Rays were getting blasted by the Yankees. We need Eovaldi back and healthy and help in the BP. Despite all of their hitting, the Yankees still have a weakness with their starting rotation. Certainly we are not in a doom and gloom situation.

I doubt it stays that way for long

i round down. we would have won. dammit. but if your cool with Price coming out after 73 pitches Moon so be it. you are on record saying it now....

Slash, your intense dislike of Price is rearing its head in this thread.

dammit. i actually like him now. hahahaha.

the Loss was not the bullpens fault. actually my original argument(s) in this thread had zero to do with a W or an L. it was simply the decision to remove the starter in the 5th inning of a 1-1 game with only 73 pitches thrown. that was my only point. it certainly has snaked back and forth to all sorts of places now but the original premise is the same. i 100% disagree with removing the Ace Starting Pitcher in the 5th inning of a 1-1 game with only 73 pitches thrown. unless he was/is hurt. and i have yet to see anything conclusive that David Price is hurt.

specifically post #2071 of this thread.

and what has followed is that many of you are now on record being OK with pulling David Price in the 5th inning of a 1-1 game.

No. I’m “on record” as to being open-minded about the situation. If Cora pulled him, say, to keep his IP down, that was not the game to do it. But I do think the decision was made with information I don’t have, and Price himself made some comment about it not being “on Alex”, which makes me think maybe Price asked to come out for some reason...
