I imagine DD has a pretty good idea about Pedroia already...

Pedroia has already said that he's 100% in to start the season.

In that respect, it does make sense. But Bradley is probably 4th in terms of important Killer Bs.

Agreed, but we would be a worse team without him.

If he's the only guy we lose, we could still be highly competitive, if we stay strong every where else, bit the "how" is focal point.

He said that when he came up this year, too. Didn't he?

He did. I would be worried if said otherwise.

I'll give up on Pedroia when he gives up on himself.

And if he is, that all but kills Swihart’s roster spot.

This, of course, operates on the massive assumption that everyone is healthy, which is less likely than not...

Much to my dismay, I have the feeling the Swihart is going to be an odd man out regardless of other players' health.

I'm never giving up hope, but I'm not counting on anything.

That's good to hear, seriously. If he was really not progressing at all, somebody in the media would be onto it and would be letting us know.

That means absolutely 0 to me. That's not a knock on Pedey, rather it's a good thing. That's his attitude - that he's always ready to go. However, his attitude has little to do with whether his knee is actually going to be ready to go. I'm not saying it won't, but at the same time Pedey's saying that doesn't mean it will be. It only means that he wants it to be and believes it will be.

I can see why. When it comes to off-season medical reports, the only reliable news is bad news...

I get that why you feel that way.

I, OTOH, will believe Pedroia until something happens otherwise.

Pedroia will be 36 in August and had an 11 at bat season last year. While he says he is feeling ready, it has to be seen in the context of an older player with a year away from ball and coming off a knee surgery that hasn't had a lot of examples of success. He is our guy and it will be a wait and see situation.

If Pedroia really is healthy and returns to hitting .300, where would you put him in the batting order?

In this lineup, sixth or seventh?

If the Red Sox kick in a couple of million, would they be able to trade Nunez? By trading Nunez, they would open a spot for Derek Dietrich. You start off the season platooning Pedroia with Dietrich.

It seems pretty clear that both DD and Cora are quite fond of Nunez.

Why not just “platoon” Pedroia with Holt?

Dietrich plays multiple positions, but not because he is a versatile defender. The Marlins have been trying to find one he can actually play. As a hitter, he has power and not much else.

I’m all for getting a 2b if there are fears about Pedroia’s knee, but Dietrich is not the guy I’d go for...

I seriously think DD is not even looking to add a 2Bman this winter. We have too many greater needs and too many capable players on the roster now who can play 2B.

Pedroia

Holt

Nunez

Lin

Marco H.

(Maybe Chavis or Swihart in a pinch)

Save some budget space for the summer, and if we need to, we can go out and get someone like Kinsler again.

Brock Holt is stereotyped as a bench player. Not sure what he has to do to change that.

Keep improving like he showed last year.

It is telling that we pretty much signed Pablo, because Holt failed to win the 3B job, and we ended up trading for and re-signing Nunez as insurance for Holt as Pedey's back-up. Then, we still ended up trading for Kinsler and using Phillips at 2B last year over Holt.

I am not expecting Pedroia to return to all star form, but I think that he can contribute at a level that is better than the Holt/Nunez duo. That's no knock against Holt or Nunez, I just feel that they serve the team better in utility roles.

He could probably be a starter on many teams.

On the Red Sox, he serves the team best in a utility role.

Third.

His power has all but disappeared.

His OBP is his best offensive weapon at this point.

In 2017, his OBP was .369 and his SLG was barely higher at .392.

He hits in too many DPs to bat second. I think batting him 6th or 7th works best.

I like this...

1) Betts

2) Beni

3) Bogey

4) JD

5) Devers

6) Pedey v R/ Pearce v L

7) Moreland v R/ Pedey v L

8) JBJ

9) Vaz/Leon

Is putting a .370 OBP up in front of JDM and X really a bad suggestion? By the end of the year,Moreland and Pearce were hitting there...

I want JD batting 4th. I'd be okay with a .370 OBP Pedey up 3rd, but I like Bogey more. He's improving and has more speed.

Second base really doesn't look like any kind of big issue with or without Pedroia. We all would like to see an upgrade if possible I guess, but personally I don't expect much from him. Unless a miracle has occurred (I believe in them by the way), I think that I would exchange his name with someone else when projecting next years lineup out of the gate. Projecting him third is a pipe dream. having him in the lineup is a dream. He will get his chance and it could happen. I think that him making a strong comeback is as likely as Hanley making one. Oh wait, Hanley is making one. Now there's the guy we could use. Come on - stick him at second and call it good.
