Strange that you would say that, especially since you're always looking at L/R splits and with all your comments about how much Beni has struggled against lefties.

Career OPS vs. LHP:

Leon 733

Swihart 659

Beni 566

I'd have chosen these options in this order:

1) PH Swihart

2) Leave Holt up- his L-R splits are about equal.

3) PH Beni

4) PH Leon

And yet Leon has a higher OPS vs. LHP than all 3. So what's the rationale - the other 3 are better looking?

Leon has better ST OPS vs LHP, but smaller sample size. I would’ve gone with Beni due to him just simply being the best hitter we had available. Plus Swihart being highly motivated without a clear role on the team. But that’s just me. Leon does seem to have more power vs LHP and perhaps that’s what Cora was looking for in that situation.

Beni has yet to show that he can hit LHP tho?

Whoever he used was going into an almost impossible situation. Sit on the bench for nearly 4 hours on a freezing cold night and come in to face a guy who throws 98 on a bad day.

Maybe Leon was the warmest of the bunch? (was he or Swihart in the pen to warm up the pitchers, who ever it was was probably the warmest).

This^^^ Wasn't the purpose of that at bat, was to get on base, and get the tying run to the plate? (Obviously a hit would be nice), Would of left Holt in, not because I like him, only because he had at bats, was ready at least for seeing Pitches throughout the game.

Situation like that has to be stored away in Cora's notes. Part of learning process, about the players.

Situation like what?

You pinch hit with a REAL f***ing MLB hitter, not Leon in any situation.

Agreed. That was stupid. but of course, the manager is privy to information that we don't have. Maybe our major league hitters on the bench had the flu or dysentery. Sarcasm. It was just stupid. We would have had a better chance with Benny against the lefty while hitting one-handed with one eye closed and wearing a diaper. Leon sucks.

Agreed. I was incredulous when Leon stepped to the plate with Beni and Swihart available.

Meh. I had gone to bed, but looked at the game summary today and saw that Leon made a fly out for out #1. The next two guys were Betts and Devers who both struck out to end the game. Cora could maybe have done better than using Leon, but the real problem with the 9th was two of our best hitters. And the real problem with the game was the pitching.

This was simply not our night. That said, it's still kind of neat that there was still another 9th inning rally and that we are arguing about who should have pinch hit. Most of us think the Sox have been kind of lucky thus far, but I think the spark in this year's model is real.

Moonslav says guys aren't injured this year. Others say JD is a plus. Whatever the cause, it sure is fun.

So far the only real problem I have with this team is my own habit of deserting when things go bad.

Although it may seem like all I care about is OPS, it's not true.

I thought you cared a lot about L/R splits.

What exactly is the reasoning behind the order you listed the 4 options in, then, and why you said Cora's choice of Leon was 'sad'?

Ok.

He didn’t stuggle against lefties in College, the minors, this past ST. I think his struggle last season vs lefties is a bit overblown considering it was his rookie year. He’s shown considerably less power vs lefties, sure. I’ll need about two more seasons of him struggling vs lefties for me to say he stuggles vs lefties.

Until he can do it against MLB pitching, I'm not sold on him being able to do it.

Beni deserves a longer look vs lefties than he's gotten at the ML level and his minor league sample size vs lefties isn't all that big either, but certainly he needs to be monitored.

Now we just have to see the a700 "All Suck Team".

Brock Holt is now 1-16.

Best play he's made this season is getting Kelly suspended for 6 games.

Isn’t it kind of early in the year to be calling someone out!

I mean half the forum wants JBJ benched/traded and want Price off the team.. so no, apparently not.

I've always disliked Holt. I called him out during spring training.

I just don't see how we can get away from signing Kimbrel. He's the sure thing as we have in the pen.

Kimbrel is one of the very best relief pitchers in history, without a doubt.

Dombrowski might feel the same way. He did pay a lot to get him in the first place.

Especially with our BP our weak spot this year.

and I think that his value might even be underestimated - I absolutely loved what he said about analytics in his latest interview. He believes in them and thinks that there is great value in using them but they are not the end all - as he said there is no way to quantify what it takes to get the last 3 outs in the 9th inning. If he continues pitching at the level he has and currently is, who is to say that he isn't as valuable to a team as any other player could be? It might be just a matter of how you look at things in general I guess. He might be worth a lot for us to sign him.
