Three games in and what have we learned about Cora and the team?

It is early to really learn much, but Cora is limiting his starting pitchers early in the year, perhaps in hope of not wearing them down as the season progresses. He is also using his full roster in games, with the exception of Swihart, who has not gotten in. Did he have his best fielding lineup in yesterday? Not by my standards. Did he have his best hitting lineup in yesterday? Don't think so either. Is he just trying different arrangements to see what happens and to reduce wear and tear on our catcher. Looks like yes.

So far the good that has happened is Bogey is starting off red hot and showing some power. Some will attribute it to his better health while others to better coaching. Whatever the reason, he is our best hitter at this juncture. Others are showing some hitting ability so there is hope of more to come soon.

Our starting pitching through 3 games has been very good. Sale has all his stuff. Price has less velocity but knows how to pitch in and out, up and down and mixes his pitches well. Porcello kept his pitches down until starting to lose it after 5. Everything started to be up in the zone where he gets killed. Cora got him out of there in time. Barnes and Kimbrel have been good in relief.

The bad to date is that our bull pen is full of tall hard throwing guys who have trouble getting the ball over. Not so good for setup men to be this wild. Also, Poyner was leaving balls up across the center of the plate and was quickly burned and had to be yanked. Our bull pen to date is worrisome.

Its early in the season but through 3 games our lead off three hitters are pretty far off. Betts at least showed some ability to make solid contact while Beni less so and Dreadlocks needs a haircut. Both JBJ and Leon also look like they are continuing their weak performances at the plate from last year. .

Our defense with Nunez at third, Bogey at short and Holt at 2nd was as weak at those positions as perhaps any in the MLs. Couple that with JD in left and it isn't anything to brag about.

New managers have to experiment with their guys and I am willing go give Cora the benefit of the doubt while he does that. Devers is a young strong guy and would prefer that he is in the lineup, especially when the alternative is Holt (both left handed hitters).Maybe Devers was injured, I don't know.

I also Hope that Cora makes moves quickly when people are not performing. Games early in the year do count as much as those later on so we don't want to see a poor quality player used when it become apparent that he is a detriment. Management is in the best position to make the decisions provided they have the guts to do it.

On to game 4.

Before the season started Cora said he was planning to use his bench extensively to keep guys rested. So you're not going to see the best team every game. It's a philosophy of managing the season vs. just managing game to game.

I disagree. He got better a little bit, then he regressed over the lasr 2+ years.

2013-2015

+0.1 UZR/150 (thanks to 2015's +1.0)

- 8 DRS in 2293 innings

2016-2018

-2.3 UZR/150

-20 DRS in 2706 innings

Don't you know that in Boston every game is more important than game 7 of the World Series? ;)

Playing 4 games on turf also factored into Cora's decisions.

A good post once again. I don't agree with some of it but that makes no difference. At this point in time, with Bogaerts I would say that it is all about him and his health. If any coach helped him, they must not have worked with Benintendi, Bradley and others. When Bogey is healthy, we have seen this before.

Bogey's making a case for sticking around.

5 doubles and an HR in 2.5 games!

Or traded for a real nice return in the off-season? Lol I simply question whether Sox can afford both Betts & XB long term.

I definitely now think his wrist injury last July had a lot more to do with his down year than any real regression. Maybe not his range on defense, although it does help having the ability to finish plays off with a healthy wrist on your throwing hand.

I would aqllow that health has a lot to do with Bogey's resurgence but he also had the most to gain from taking a more aggressive approach at the plate. Betts apprears to be hitting it well but in bade luck. Beni is mainly hitting it into the ground at this point. I expect both of them to move forward. Interesting point somebody made about the astroturf that impacts Cora's desire to give guys a rest, although Devers was playing on dirt and he is just a young kid. Hope he plays today.

If Price sticks around, keeping Sale, Betts and XB would cost us over half of the luxury budget (maybe $115M for just 4 guys).

It's hard to imagine that happening.

I guess it's only okay for certain posters to "have his say," then the discussion is supposed to end.

(BTW, it's usually the guy with the smallest penis who has to have the last word and not the guy with the bigger one.)

I'm okay with using the bench a lot, and I like our bench, but I did not expect our starters would need rest so soon in the season.

We have 3 subs starting in game 4 (Holt, Moreland and Swihart). 2 starts for Holt in the first 4 games is too much for me to stomach.

Moreland batting 5h again, just like last year.

I'm not bashing Cora, but this is bugging me. (Holt + Moreland are 0-12 so far. I'm so glad we are keeping them fresh.)

It is always heart warming to see the refugees back each other.

All I have said is that Bogey is not a laibility and that he makes most of the plays even with what some seem to believe is a limited range.

Everyone who has been here for years knows I do not put much stock in some of the defensive metrics. I see Bogey making plays that he could not make routinely when he first came up.

I think that is improvement.

I do not see him making many mistakes that lose games or contribute to a loss. If other see that, they should see an eye doctor.

The Guy can hit when healthy.

Again, I do not see poor defense from him and I do not see him as a liability in any way.

And yes, I do know there are better defensive players at his position.

My last two comments met with the usual "I know more than you because I like numbers".

Horseshit.

No. I see it as a proportional response to a post that was intended to negate my opinion. That being the second consecutive time this had happened in the thread in a matter of hours.

You live to counter just about anything said by many. Regardless if you are "correct".

It's not rocket surgery and the ultimate word is not essential for most. Unless someone has a dire need for validation.

WTF!

I post a lot. Shoot me if you want.

Stop pretending you know my motives for posting.

Bogey has not improved on defense, IMO. You can believe what you want and continue being an a-hole all you want. I'm going to keep giving my opinion despite your dickheadedness.

Some here do live to negate the opinions of others. What they don't understand is that no matter how many numbers they pull out of their ass, they too are just stating an opinion which isn't worth a piss more than any of the other educated and studied opinions here. I know you to be a pretty calm guy and you have a long history here. You are not prone to overreaction.

He offered an opinion as to why he felt different to you (in the conversation you were having no less) and you had - and continue to have - a meltdown.

I don't have any over riding feelings on either of you other than wondering why you've decided to make a fool of yourself today/turn it so personal.

No they don't.
Spud is probably the most laid back poster here. If he is noticing something, maybe people need to think about how they are perceived. Coming from me (an irascible sometime prick) it wouldn't mean as much, but coming from Spud, it is a different story.
