There's no way they can schedule around guys being hot and cold - analytics doesn't believe in hot and cold anyway.

Is this plan really all that hard or will greatly unbalance the days off when compared to planning on a day off for player A in 12 days?

1. Plan on giving player A a day off in 10-14 days.

2A. If the player is cold, you might give him a day off on day 8 or 9, especially if facing a pitcher that is not a good match.

2B. If the player is hot, you may hold off until day 15-16, especially if the pitcher is a good/better match for a day off.

3. If there is no good match for a day off, you just give him one, somewhere between 10 and 14, if 2A or 2B do not occur.

I'm not arguing some major change. While I think Cora gives a few too many days off, that part doesn't bother me as much as the rigidity of the "plan," and how it sometimes sits a guy when facing a likely good match-up, or when a guy seems to be heating up, nicely. I'm not suggesting a radical departure from what Cora does.

The thing is, Cora has to plan around 13 players, not just one. If it was one it would be a lot simpler.

And again, analytics doesn't really buy into hot and cold streaks. The patterns are very random throughout the year for most hitters.

They do but into splits, and moving a planned day by 1-2 days is not rocket science.

One thing about rest days that really gets an old schooler's knickers in a knot is when a player is rested the day before an off day.

It should be abundantly obvious that under modern load management theory, travel days are not considered to be rest days.

We've got Exhibit A for that theory in Yoshida. Everyone agrees that the MLB travel schedule is one of the biggest factors in his wearing down this year.

And before someone else says it, I'll say it: "A lot of good Cora's rest days did Yoshida, huh?"

A lotta good it did anyone!

Yoshi also DH'd a lot.

Maybe, without JT, we spread the DH role around more, and then players won't need as many full days off.

Maybe Yoshida DHs 80-110 games, Casas & Devers 15-20, each and we can keep all their bats in the line-up over 150-154 games.

NESN already announced plans for next season. They vow to give fans a rest every Friday -- the day before most get the weekend off -- by not broadcasting Red Sox games that night.

Instead of last-place baseball on Fridays, NESN is scheduled to show classic black-and-white monster movies. It's all nostalgia, for a time when fans actually enjoyed watching horror on their TVs.

My favorite was "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" -- Lon Chaney's Wolfman battles Bela Lugosi's Dracula! There was no dumpster diving in casting those roles; directors went right after the biggest names in mayhem.

An actual great idea!

@ColeyMick

Alex Cora naming Chris Sale the opening day starter in September was more of a warning than any of us realized at the time

I guess it must not be his birthday next year like it was this year.

If they f*** up this offseason, this is the beginning of my journey towards turning into a bitter old SeaBeachFred.

I'd quit following baseball before turning into SBF.

Remember Fred well. If you can afford it, being a bitter old man as long as you have a sense of humor isn't so bad.

I will do my best to take my frustrations out on those damn bums and not other posters.

Verdugo I mean Vertigo is a Bitch. Cora has his players and teammates backs more than anyone in the game. You aired yourself out by being late, lazy and unproductive. If I played for Cora I’m drilling this bitch, just saying.

I like Paplebon more as an ex-player than as a current player, I think.

mvp says the Sox are out on Montgomery and Snell.

SI disagrees.

But I do think (re: hope) they avoid the overrated Snell. Montgomery no longer passes for underrated, however…

The story just reports what Ken Rosenthal says "that the Sox NEED to be in on them." That's all. There's no smoke.

Is this one of their AI written articles?

I have no idea about the “A”, but SI hasn’t seen the “I” portion of that equation in decades…

In his praising ( butt kissing? ) of Aaron Boone, Verdugo took what was a pretty obvious shot at Alex Cora. Obviously there is bad blood there.

They do a pretty good job of keeping this type of stuff in house but you could see this one coming for sure. He sure wasn't Cora's kind of guy.

I always liked Papelbon.

i don't see the Sox bucking for Snell both because of the $$ and years to sign him but also because of the draft pick it would cost them. As for Montgomery given where the Sox are right now I'd pass on him too. I would not want to get tied into him for 6 years or the like. Like I said in another post Sox may as well mail in 2024 and then draft another shortstop because it makes no sense to draft a P with our 1st pick.

Unless the pitcher has a really good arm, then they could convert him to shortstop in the minors, and not trade him for pitching.

If they don't make any very serious moves, they won't have to ever worry about firing Alex Cora. He'll be offered a contract from somebody else that financially he won't refuse. He'll simply walk away and go to a franchise that has a commitment to win.

And Alex kind of put himself out there with his own "full throttle" type statements about how the Sox needed to approach this offseason.

Yeah, he's likely a goner.
