Ya, maybe they like Wink more as a match-up righty now than a bulk-guy, which may have burned him out (as he was less effective after a hot start). But if they're going to keep rolling the dice with 40% bullpen games, then maybe it'll just be Pivetta and the fresh guy of the month, like Murphy for now.

Sam Kennedy -- surprise -- is more excited about all the guys coming off the IL, who of course will be better than any other healthy deadline acquisition (blow nsave, I mean, hold-save).

What team will have better trade deadline acquisitions than Story, Sale, Whitlock and Houck?!?!?

If we add one SP'er and 2 out of the 3 on IL comeback and do well, our staff could be top 4 or 5.

Our pitching ranks 7th in fWAR in all of MLB since April 30th.

In that same timeframe we are 7th in xFIP at 4.04- just 0.01 from 6th (MN.)

We are 5th in runs scored and 6th in team OPS.

We could easily be top 5 in pitching and hitting, yet it seems many fans think this team is not worthy of contention status.

I know our D sucks, but top 5 in the two major categories is enough for me to think we have a shot at the ring.

Your take on the upside of this pitching staff is, well, very generous. Your visual aids seem to be tinted with a pinkish hue.

The numbers don't lie.

Since April 30th, our staff has done comparatively well. fWAR and xFIP are two metrics that are very telling and cover a wide range of factors.

We are very close to top 5 in pitching before Schreiber, Houck, Whitlock or Sale return or any pitchers are added via trades.

It may be wishful thinking, but I think it still falls under the "realistic" umbrella.

An enraged Alex Cora says Verdugo wasn’t available due to a “manager’s decision. “We took a step back as a team today.” Called it one of the “worst days” he has had since taking over in 2018.

I read that Verdugo was very late getting to the ballpark. Don't know if there is more to it than that, but based on Cora's reaction, maybe there was.

There's also speculation Verdugo was cheesed off for being pinched hit in yesterday's game and went after Cora for it.

Didn't Dugo get benched one game, earlier, this year for dogging it?

Maybe notin is right- he will be traded.

I would have liked to have seen Verdugo traded at the deadline. He obviously has some talent but is it possible that there might be a little too much me me me in him and not enough team?

I like Cora in many respects but who is ultimately to blame for the absolutely stupid and undefendible play that ended yesterday's game? It is situational baseball plays like this that make a big difference between the best and the worst of them.

Ultimately? How about the dumbass baserunner celebrating with his hands up in the air and loping around third? Managers just aren't allowed to bolt out of the dugout and tackle their own guys or push them back to second base to tag up.

Now, it is worth debating how much a coaching staff is culpable when baserunning gaffes repeatedly haunt a ballclub -- a lax culture? inattention to detail? too many Red Bulls? too many gummies? is it Bloom's fault for not vetting IQs?

So do we bring back an egotist who contrives discipline like Bobby Valentine and have Pedroia tell him, "That's not the way we do things around here"?

Reese McGuire isn't a rookie. I think that one is on him.

I would never advocate for someone like Valentine but I do hate to see bad baseball. Here is a question that might be asked to that "dumbassed" base runner - Are you stupid or are you uncoachable? Stupid you can live with uncoachable not so much. You don't have to be an autocrat to get your players to pay attention to detail. Someone should have been legitimately pissed off at said baserunner or maybe even your 3rd base coach. Maybe it's ok what happened to end yesterday's game right. In this day and age we would never want to embarrass or even worse make these guys feel bad about themselves. lol My personal opinion (hope that it is ok to express this still on here without supporting it with data) is that this team is not particularly well coached even though I do still like Cora.

A major rookie shouldn't make that mistake. Pretty basic baseball play.

We know that Cora is a player's manager and we know that he's absolutely furious at Verdugo and has made that public. So he's not a total pushover.

There has been many games not just this year, but last year too especially between base running, and the D that the team has looked like a bunch of Little Leaguers.

I agree. I like Cora and i can only imagine the pressure that he is under daily. What he decides to do and say and address in that clubhouse is no business of mine.

Managing in Boston is a pressure cooker job, but it’s not as bad as it could be for Cora, because most of the anger is directed to Bloom, and JH, so Cora is only third down the list.

You're right about that I think.

I’d think so if this was an isolated incident. But why do the Sox make so many absolutely pathetic baserunning mistakes? That triple play a couple weeks, for example, back wasn’t bad luck…

I certainly have no explanation. Is it lack of coaching, stupid players, both?

I find it hard to believe we only acquire stupid players.

I think there is an over-aggressive baserunning initiative this year. The Sox have been trying to exploit the larger bases since December. Maybe this was a team wide stategy in the dugout as well?

yeah, i just thought the triple play was the king of stupid then McGuire says 'here, hold my beer'.

Could it be we also acquire stupid coaches? What's that say about those who do the acquiring?

And while we're at it, why has there been a team policy for decades to accumulate pitchers who absolutely negatively cannot throw accurately to any base except sometimes home base?

hmmm Are you stupid are you just uncoachable? Stupid at least can be worked with.lol

Am I stupid if I keep paying stupid money to watch these clever comedians?

well let's diagnose this. For starters, you are uncoachable I guess pretty much like me. As for stupid, I'm not going to offer an assessment about you. In my case, I'm likely a little bit of both. I'm bored as well and they do offer some form of entertainment such as it is. There are only so many more golf balls for me to hit. Maybe we are just hopeful that something good could happen.

Dugy back in the lineup today. That’s showing him Cora. He had already been benched for a game earlier in the season, so it should have been at least 2 games this time.
