The Red Sox gave Alex Cora a second chance:

https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2023/02/08/upcoming-book-contains-new-details-about-alex-coras-involvement-in-astros-sign-stealing-scandal/

How would Red Sox fans feel if Cora managed the Yankees?

I'd rather the Yanks keep Boone right where he is. Cora would probably win 3-6 more games for them, so I wouldn't like it.

I don’t think most people would have said anyone hated Cora in the first place.

The outright Cora haters don't post all that often anymore, but they have existed on here.

Wow! I was one who said I wouldn’t have hired Cora back, and I like Cora.

I think it's a reasonable position to state that you wouldn't want him back because of the baggage post-scandal. There were people that despised him long before that.

What was the big reason for hating Cora?

It's all second-hand accounts from unnamed sources.

And although they reflect badly on Cora, from the looks of it, he's far from alone in this book. Note the accusation about the Dodgers being the worst cheaters in baseball.

I think the sign-stealing scandal will go down along with PEDs as another dark period in baseball history.

Only for those who like to pretend that the Astros were the only team in the history of baseball that devised schemes to steal signs, and that no other players, coaches and front offices have since -- or will -- from the beginning of the invention of baseball until the end of time.

This particular tired story is now almost six years old. All the scape-goats -- the ones on the sidelines who sought an edge for the actual players -- have been rehired in some capacity in the majors by now. All the actual performers -- the ones with immunity who were and still are good enough to rely on old forms of sign-stealing before and since -- continue to star in the big leagues.

Well said. I just hope we don't get caught.

Except Jeff Luhnow, who is working for a Mexican soccer team of which he is a part owner.

Luhnow is the guy who built that non-stop Astros farm system…

Need to boost book sales somehow.

Red Sox beat reporter Jen McCaffrey at The Athletic interviewed Evan Drellich regarding his upcoming book:

What separated the reporting Ken and I did for The Athletic on both the Astros and Red Sox from everything else is that we had firsthand sourcing. People on the inside of both of those teams who weren’t pointing fingers across the way, but who were instead pointing inward. These were people saying, “I, we, cheated, and I know we cheated, because I lived it.”

OK, I should have just said "unnamed sources".

As for not pointing fingers, what about the accusations against the Dodgers as the worst cheaters-do they not count?

In case anyone is curious about Cora's contract status, per Alex Speier, when they re-signed Cora for 2021 he got a 2-year contract, plus a team option for a further 2 years, which they "quietly" exercised, as Speier put it.

Not unless they count the number of times Manfred refused to release to the press the report on the Yankees' sign-stealing violations.

Figure it's time to reboot this. Only the hapless A's are further back in their division than us at 31-32. The team stinks. The players and Cora look as engaged as if they were teleworking. Bloom bungled the roster. Both should go. Poor evaluation.

This team is roughly as good as one could have expected ex ante.

The team's starting pitching looked interesting but very high variance - and they have delivered on that.

The team's bullpen looked solid - and they have been solid

The team's offense looked above average - and they have been a little above average and that is with a poor Devers season

The team's defense looked bad - and has been every bit as bad as advertised

So what you have is a totally unremarkable baseball team. Indeed, Cora has probably gotten more out of the pitching staff than I expected. The team is just not really much of an improvement over potted plants out there in the field.

Good summary.

I will add, the team is 7th in team OPS and tied for 8th in runs scored, despite being 11th in wRC+, so I would say that is better than "a little above average," but of late, they have been just that.

The pitching has been about 10th in many key categories of measurement since the start of May or mid May, so maybe that can change by year's end.

SP since May 13th:

4th xFIP at 3.91

8th in ERA at 3.84

8th in ERA- at 87

7th in K-BB% at 17%

Yes, these are just SP'er numbers, and they include the 10 run game vs CLE a few days ago.

11th in fWAR at 2.1
