if we brought in any starter at this point in trainers my camp, I think it is very unlikely they could be ready for opening day. We are basically launching with a half dozen pitchers on the shelf.

Time for the AAAA pitchers to step up!

And that is the kind of thing I do blame Dombrowski for. He really did ignore pitching depth this winter.

Although I think this might be a generalization as there may be a few pitchers who have kept themselves in shape, especially as other teams were going through Spring Training,..

I think some fans tend to develop a hoarding disorder. They want to hold on to all our prospects because " we may need them someday." And they want to collect over the hill ham and eggers for " depth " , " just in case we have a lot of injuries." Let it go. There will always be more prospects coming along . As for the ham and eggers , they are a dime a dozen. You can always pick one up cheap if need be.

Right on! I think that Dombrowski knows that too.

Once a guy has an elbow problem like Price, they are on TJ watch forever after. The same is true of Tanaka. Hopefully, Price will be as fortunate as Tanaka and be able to perform at a high level and avoid surgery.

Tanaka at least had a procedure that is proven to heal the tear, at least proven now. At the time, it was voodoo

No. In fact my biggest criticism of Cherington was that he didn't trade prospects, despite my faith he could replace them.

Dombrowski has traded pretty much all of them. In the next two years, the Sox could lose all of Sale, Bogaerts, Hanley, Pomeranz, Kimbrel and Porcello, among others. Who is going to replace them? Brian Johnson and Sam Travis? The Sox are built ton "win now", but that can disappear with one or two key injuries. So will you call Dombrowski the victim of bad luck?

Not to mention the overall pitching depth is extremely poor. You might like Jalen Beeks now, but how will you feel if he can't get his ERA under 5.00? Or 6.00? Or 243.00?

The same "ham and eggers" you disparage are still better than most prospects (which are not all created equal). And that includes many of the top-ranked prospects. If you took the top ten starting pitching prospects in MLB right now, using whatever ranking you like, easily 1/3 of them will never be better than Trevor Cahill is today. And it's funny that you can't stand these veteran pitchers only one season after the Sox won the AL East by such a slim margin that we probably would not have won it at all and maybe not even made the playoffs if Henry Owens was taking Doug Fister's starts. But hey, who needs guys like Fister? We have Justin Haley queued up for key Sepetember starts...

So it kind of sounds like you would have been ok with a little mediocrity for a few years so that we could hang on to all of our average at best to date prospects. Not me - I like winning I guess just too much!

We already lack the starting pitching depth to get through the season, as things stand right now.

I wouldn't say that we already lack the depth, but I get what you're saying. We do need a lot to go our way (ERod and Pom returning quickly, and everyone staying healthy), which could be asking a lot.

Maybe. Why not have a few more options and simply pick the best one? Not sure why so many people are opposed to minor league deals that carry ZERO risk.

If Velasquez and Johnson are good enough, what is the risk in having them compete with a veteran or two on a minor league deal to earn the spot?

So many people do not have the common sense that Notin and Kimmi have.

We could have held on to some of those prospects and still had a strong, contending team. Wanting to hold onto the prospects is not being okay with mediocrity.

yes we could have, yes - I'm just not as sure as you are about the strong and contending team but whatever right - I like Pomeranz, Kimbrel, and Sale. Just two different opinions I guess.

I like Pom, Kimbrel, and Sale too. I love our team in a short term window.

Lynn has signed w/ the Twins 1yr/$12M. I’m kinda happy he’ll be available next off season. And if the Twins suck, maybe earlier. And if he sucks, forget about it.

Notln , You neglect to mention a few key points. Mister Fister was not signed during spring training as depth insurance. He was acquired off waivers ( on the cheap ) in late June when the need arose. And while he was a help , the fact is he went 5 - 9 , with a 4.88 ERA. Arguably , the worst year of his career. He then bombed in the ALDS. My point is , that should the need arise , pitchers like Fister can always be acquired without much trouble or expense. Meanwhile, use Pawtucket to audition the arms we already have.

1 year.

Looks like he's hoping things change next season.

I guess it's safe to say not even Theo saw this bargain basement situation developing. Otherwise he probably wouldn't have signed Chatwood for 3 years/38 million. He might have been able to re-sign Arrieta for that kind of money now.

He still can. And he's the one guy who doesn't have to worry about giving up draft picks for Arrieta. ..

If a lot of these guys hold out until after the June draft, I wonder if they might be a possibility to Boston then?

It doesn't look like many want to hold out. It looks like most just want to play ball.

I would have to think that holding out until June looks like a horrible option to most players. You're looking at missing about half the season. That's a sizable chunk of your career. And falling behind that far in live action time could screw up your whole season.

[h=1]Phillies, Jake Arrieta Agree To Three-Year Deal[/h]By Connor Byrne | March 11, 2018 at 3:58pm CDT

The Phillies have reached a multiyear agreement, pending a physical, with free agent right-hander Jake Arrieta, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports on Twitter. It’ll be a three-year contract for the Scott Boras client, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. Both Nightengale and Jon Heyman of FanRag previously reported that the Phillies and Arrieta were headed toward a deal.

Phillies are not screwing around ...good for them .two positives on this 1. I can stop obsessing over Arietta pitching here 2. He's not a Yankee or Astro .

Anibal Sanchez was released by the Twins. Add another to the list of possible dumpster dives. And 3 of them are former Red Sox!

I'd go for Lackey or Dickey. Edited by a700hitter
