The only injury that I can possibly think of that could cause pedroia to drag the leg around for most of the season and not require surgery is a torn mcl.

Great now we get to watch pedroia hurt the team again next year by trying to play through a hurt leg.

Hopefully the new manger has the guts to stamp "fragile" on pedroia's forehead and put him on the dl with all the other broke down sunsetters before he costs us games,

My understanding about Pedroia is that there is no guarantee that the surgery will "solve" his knee problems either. It would behoove Dombrowski to have a legit depth option in place at 2B either way. That said, if anyone can come back from this injury, it's Pedroia. I won't count him out.

If ever a player could hit one-legged, it would be Pedey.

I hope he can do something over the off season to help lessen the chance of a re-occurrence. Maybe just extended rest.

If we make a big acquisition like Stanton or two like lesser ones JD and Duda, maybe we can get by without Pedey being Pedey. Adding Nunez or Kendrick would help.

What do we think about adding Neil walker?

Like Nunez, he will want a FT job, but he only plays 2B.

I'd prefer Nunez, but if we can't get him, we might try Walker or Kendrick.

In 2018, pedroia is going to try to come back. By the end of may, he will be injured.

Nunez looks to have a torn pcl. That means surgery, not sure he makes sense.

Marco missed the year. Holt was concussed and then played like he still was all year.

Neither walker nor Kendrick seem like fits.

Maybe we sign cozart and move him to second.

Or, move Bogey to 2B.

SS Defense

Bogey -1.7 UZR/150 and -11 DRS

Cozart +6.2 UZR/150 and +2 DRS

Last 2 years combined:

Cozart: +10.0 UZR/150 and +14 DRS

to

Bogey: -0.7 and -21 DRS

Here's a real value of Dustin. Do you think there's a team out there that will take his contract with Sox asking NOTHING in return? Nope.

Funny, when I suggested Cozart as a good get last year you expressed concern that his hitting represented only one year of his career and that his norm might be below what we we seeing in 2017. Also he was slightly past his prime. I think Cozart would be an excellent get for the team and improve one of our positions. The alternative is Bogey stays at short and Cozart moves to 2nd or 3rd.

Not right now, because of the injury risk factor.

Cozart is a good glove/noodle bat SS. Those guys are dime a dozen. He's going to be overpaid next year. Hard pass.

Prior to last year, he was a 246AV, 289OBP, 385SLG guy who strikes out 3 times as much as he walks. Yuck!

I'd rather keep Mererro in that case.

People tend to forget that he is the best defensive SS in the Sox org.

This is entirely due to contract length - and given how cheap it is, I am not fully convinced it's a dealbreaker.

That fact that he is a f***ing gimp now is likely a deal breaker.

That is an inescapable fact.

Who wants a broken down 34 year old Smurf 2nd baseman at $13. mil a year?

His future health is the question - and it is a fair one. The Red Sox certainly need to mitigate the risk. We know if he is healthy he is still really good ... if he only had 1-2 years left on his deal, there would probably still be a market just because he is a known good player. But that is not the world we are in.

We just need to exchange bad contracts with someone.

That hardly ever works, but I'm all ears.

I'd say no to this....

Porcello (21M x 2)

Pedey ($56M/4 and $12.5M a year on luxury budget)

Total: $98M (Luxury: $33.5M)

for

AGon ($21.5M x 1)

Scott Kazmir, assuming he passes a physical- ($16M x 1)

Total: $37.5M (Luxury: $38M)

-- OR--

AGon ($21.5M) & Brandon McCarthy ($10M)

Tot$31.5M (Luxury: $34M)

moving bogey to second base is an excellent idea.

If pedroia has the surgery, he will probably miss the first part of the season.

If pedroia does not have the surgery, then he will be injured and miss the last 5 months of the season.

Being able to move bogey over could be the best position for him and our pitchers will benefit from not having him at short.

Okay. Then who plays shortstop?

Michael Chavis is more suited to second base than third based on his physique and his arm. He is hitting well in the minors and is our 3rd ranked minor league player. I would think he is a candidate to come in and fill out the second base position. Then leave Bogey at short and get a third baseman. Believe Devers is out 1st baseman of the future. We will see how our new manager feels.

If he was suited to 2b, they'd have him practicing over there. Unfortunately, they see Chavis as a 1b since that's where he is playing in the AFL.

He is short for a 1st baseman. I think 5'10" and that is probably in shoes.

Yup, he's short and maybe not athletic enough to play 2b. If Beni was in LF, my guess is Chavis would be out there during AFL. 1b is the quickest route to the majors in this organization right now.

Wasn't yaz the same height? He did ok at first if I remember correctly, but I was very young back then.

I was young, too, and Yaz was pretty old.
