Next year we can not use pedroia in the field as much as normally. He is good for 60 games a year max!

Another signing that Larry pushed down our throats that should not have happened.

That's harsh. I think everyone knew that Pedey's contract was going to bite us on the ass toward the end of it because of the way he plays the game.

Maybe, but let's face it. Pedroia at 90% is JAG.

Therefore when the banana boy gets bruised, he needs to go to the dl and not try to play through these bruises, because he is hurting the team!

$15M is not a whole lot of money even for an aging Pedey. He makes $12M his last year. By then, that may be the minimum pay.

He's been worth ever penny and then some.

The breakdowns hurt- no doubt, but I thought the extension was a steal (for us).

Right. Because everyone loved JD Drew for doing that...

It was.

$12mill for Pedroia could not have been allocated to bring in a superstar. Based on last year's prices, for about $12mill, the Sox could have signed Bartolo Colon or Matt Holliday or Edinson Volquez.

Actually, for $12mill, the Sox could NOT have signed Colon or Holliday, as both received offers slightly higher...

$12.5M 2014 (was going to make $10M)

609 PAs .712 OPS/ 4.1 WAR

$12.5M 2015 (had $11M option with $500K buyout)

425 PAs .797 OPS/ 2.6 WAR

$13M 2016

698 PAs .825 OPS/ 5.4 WAR

$15M 2017

463 PAs .760 OPS/ 1.9 WAR

$16M 2018

$15M 2019

$13M 2020

$12M 2021

fangraphs value:

2014: $31.3M

2015: $20.7M

2016: $42.8M

2017: $15.4M

Even though we probably agree these numbers are inflated, he still has clearly earned the money, so far, and then some.

It is too bad to see him in this diminished capability. Age and injury have taken a toll and he is not the same guy of just a couple of years ago. Maybe with recovery from his injury, he will be a top notch second baseman again but if that occurs, it will be next year.

It always sucks to see the former stars stumble around as injured or aged stars. You guys haven’t had too much of that. Ortiz retired after one of his best seasons. Manny was moved in his prime. Pedro left after a WS title. We have seen this far too often in NYY. Jeter, Tex, ARod, Pettitte to a degree, Posada. They all played their final season or seasons as a shell of themselves. The only real guy to retire on top was Mo. Pedey is a small guy. The little guys grind down faster. You don’t have a choice but to ride 2018 our with him, but if he looks gimpy, then buy him out at year’s end

I would do the Pedroia extension over again any day of the week. And I'm not a fan of long term contracts.

Agreed.

He is not a good defender, but IMO, Bogaerts desperately needs to sit for a few games. The defensive difference between Nunez and Bogaerts should not be that great, but the offensive upgrade should be.

Nunez aggravated his knee and was removed from the Sox post-season roster. His career with the Red Sox is likely over...

Yeah if his knee is junk for 2018 I don't see the Sox making a push to sign him.

it is too bad. His career was just starting to blossom in the last couple of years.

No doubt a lot of people on this board love pedroia, but we have to be realistic about what he is capable of doing over next several years, which is basically break down earlier and earlier every year.

If we had passed on signing pedroia to a long term contract, betts would be playing 2nd, benintendi in right field and we probably have a power hitter in left field.

Long term contracts, even with team friendly terms, rarely work for the team.

I one of those that really loves what Pedey has done for the club. It was an unfortunate year for him and frankly I don't expect more than 90 games from him in 2018, but he still can be a quality 2nd baseman. We would have to have a quality backup like Nunez. I'm with you on Nunez, as he might just have a knee issue that will restrict him going forward.

Yeah, that could be the end of Nunez with the Red Sox. I have no idea what the extent of the injury is and whether resting it over the offseason will heal the injury. I would think, however, that if he is healthy, he will be cheaper to re-sign, at least.

I am realistic about Pedroia, although he is one player that I would never bet against. He is gritty, after all.

There's no telling what might have happened if we had not extended Pedroia. Our team might be in better shape than it is now, or it might be in worse shape. I am almost always against long term contracts, but I thought his made sense, even though the team will likely 'pay' for it in the last few years. I have no regrets about the team extending him.

The reality just isn't what we want to face. Most people realize that when a long term contract is signed you will not get the same performance for the entire length of the contract. We have gotten great value out of Pedroia - one hell of a player - but his time is probably over with respect to giving us what we need going forward. Him playing in maybe 90 games and dhing is absolutely ridiculous. We all will remember him for what he has done but if championships are what the goal is, we can do better than carry a second baseman who might give us a half a year.

f*** cheap.

This team needs swat and that won't come cheap.

Nunez has now become damaged goods. I think that we can do better.

You can't expect a team to sign the best players to long/huge contracts, play said players while they are in their prime, then DFA them once they are no longer living up to the contract, eating 3 years and millions of dollars in the process. No team can survive on that type of philosophy.

But it does bring into perspective the wisdom of issuing such long contracts to start with.

Preaching to the choir.

That's a very good question. We're not going to learn the answer to it until he plays.

We may not know the answer until March, Dewey. And that may not be a very happy one.

He's taken more bumps and lumps than the rest of the starters combined! Sometimes age can catch up very fast.

Not "World Series Champions" without a few additions, that's for sure.

This offseason, sign ohtani, move devers to first, sign/trade a 3rd baseman with pop, and sign a lefty reliever.

Then pray these guys stay healthy and buy your tickets to the World Series early.

Moving a future HOF 3b to 1b when he’s 20 is dumb. Easier to find 1b rentals than fill 3b.
