i knew that I would get a response from you on this one. Good for you! I've had my share of guys that I have supported over the years who really had not been given much of a chance. Some worked out and some didn't. I am one of the few who liked the Pomeranz trade when it happened and like it more today. Hernandez is also a guy who i really think just needs to stay healthy and get a chance. I also am not as sure as some that Swihart is just done. Too much talent there. I also really thought that marrero when he was signed was going to be our next very good shortstop. As for Lin, I agree that his glove is big league. I actually don't disagree with anything that you said, i have been following his progress for a couple of years now and I just don't see the bat developing like you do. i think that he might be just a slight upgrade over marrero. I wouldn't mind being wrong about him though.

Lin needs to be given more of a chance than Holt right now, IMO.

Price wasn't the only good FA starter available that winter.

Yes, give Lin a shot. He can't do much worse than Holt has done this year.

I'd like to see his OF skills at some point without putting a game at risk.

Well, Greinke pitched like 2017 Porcello last year. I'm sure people would have been bitching about that move too. Price was twice the pitcher Greinke was last year.

Has Jordan Zimmerman been worth his contract?

Cueto was great last year, but he's been awful this year and had major injury concerns during that offseason.

You would have rather Mike Leake, Wei Yin Chan, Marco Estrada, Jeff Samardjsdfdnzia or Kazmir?

We have a pretty good variety of potential utility players to choose from going forward. Lin, Hernandez etc. I appreciate everything that Holt has done for us too but I do think that it might be time to walk away from that one one way or another. One of the issues I guess is how many different positions do you want your utility guys able to play? One of Holt's claims to fame has been that he can play them all but the question is really how well has he played them? I don't think that it has to be written somewhere that your utility guys have to be able to play both in the infield and the outfield. Lin and Hernandez are infielders. We also have some possible utility outfielders in our system right now who might be able to hit the ball over the left field wall. If they are going to be used in utility roles, I guess I would like to give them a chance before to much of a look outside is given.

I think Nunez is much better than those other players.

I would agree Nunez is better than those guys, but I also think he isn't as good as he has been so far for Boston, where he is looking like one of the best mid-season acquisitions this team has made in a long time...

i would have taken Cueto and his contract over Price and his contract erryday of the week.

and said as such over and over during that FA season...

His game has reached a new level in the last 3 years. This year has the best of the 3 seasons, but I think it would be safe to assume that he will be a .760 OPS guy with 25-30 steals as a low baseline. 81 games at Fenway might pop him up to an .800 OPS.

Agreed, but he's not a good fielder anywhere.

He's a much better bat than Holt, even the old Holt, but they are similar in the they both can play substandard defense at many positions.

No way can we hand any key role to Hernandez, Lin or Travis at this point in their careers.

I am not adverse to trying Travis at 1st next year.

Everyone criticizes his D and is quick to point out that he has little power so his bat "won't play" at 1st.

I see acceptable defense and a good hit tool.

I'd much rather give him a shot and see how he does than spend huge money on some FA stiff.

Or just bring back Moreland.

Surprisingly, he's actually done better on the road than at Fenway since joining the Sox.

.905 to .869

I really like Nunez, but this year will only be his second year with over 500 PAs.

That makes it a little harder to project going forward at age 30-31.

Which is why I would think that a 3 contract would be the limit.

I think 3 years would get him back here. I want him back, if his contract doesn't limit us from improving our clean-up slot upgrade.

A .760 OPS is a pretty decent guess, although the help from Fenway could also be offset somewhat by his aging over the next few years.

As it was pointed out, money talks. So when Nunez hits the market, a safe bet he will want as much money and playing time for as long as possible. The Sox could use him to replace Moreland with minimal juggling, but will they? How much will they spend for him and for how long?

It's not anything I can answer

This offseason Eduardo Nunez will be about seven months younger than Luis Valbuena was last offseason when the Los Angeles Angels signed Valbuena to a two-year, $15 million contract with a mutual option for a third year.

Nunez is a 6-foot, 195-pound Dominican infielder with his fourth MLB organization. Valbuena was a 5-foot-10, 210-pound Venezuelan infielder with his fourth MLB organization when he reached free agency. Each has limited experience in the outfield.

Nunez has posted 4.1 fWAR in 668 career games, including 5.8 fWAR over the past three seasons. When he signed his free agent contract, Valbuena had posted 8.1 fWAR in 798 games, including 6.3 fWAR over the three previous seasons.

My Christmas wish llist to Santa includes 3 things:

1. A copy of a contract signed by Nunez and the Sox for 2018 through 2020.

2. A copy of Chili Davis's walking papers

3. A contract with one power hitting 1st baseman.

Note that other peoples wish list will probably include others but these are my top three.

Nothing wrong with that list.

Except that there are really no great dependable power hitting 1Bman fee agents.

Mark Reynolds can be depended on for power. He can't be depended on for much else, however...

Posted
How does Carlos Santana for first base sound? Some power, plus good on base percentage.

He'd probably be terrific at the beginning of the deal. But at 32, if he wants 5 years, he isn't likely to age well and will be an albatross by 35...

Yeah, I meant more than just power, but the power was the "must".

1st question, notin:

If you only could get one of these guys for 2018-2019 (forget the beyond), who would it be?

Hosmer

Santana

JD Martinez (at 1B? or DH?)

Duda

Morrison

Alonso

Moreland

2nd question:

Is trading for Votto or Stanton a realistic option and what would a reasonable package look like?

HRam or Porcello (as salary offset?)

Bogey (we then maybe sign Cozart?)

Groome or Mata

Chavis or Ockimey

Always the trade route, which is something Dombrowski has shown he certainly likes to do.

E-Rod to the Giants for Brandon Belt, who is in the top eight among 1B over the last 3 years in OBP, wOBA, wRC and fWAR. He's 14th in SLG, but SF's home park is not built for lefties.

Then spend your cash on Alex Cobb...

1. JD Martinez. I liked him back when he was in Houston and was shocked they released him.

2. No. Votto is the Reds most marketable player (they do have to sell tickets) and Stanton isn't likely to go anywhere cheap, regardless of that frightening contract...

Not a bad idea, but how does Belt solve our clean-up hitter void? He does not have more power than HRam or Moreland and has just a slightly better OPS.

I deleted that post because I couldn't get JD to come out in all caps LOL

LOL That sounds like something I would do. I don't like how this site de-capitalizes some words when they're quoted in posts.

My wish list includes a #2/3 starter. That would be my top wish.

My top priorities are always to add an ace.

I'm not sure how realistic that is this off season. We have Price returning, hopes that Porcello can get his act together (again) and Wright as a hopeful depth piece.

This what I want:

1) A GREAT clean-up hitter (if he can play 1B- all the better)

2) A solid bench player like Nunez, since Pedey, HRam and no 4th OF'er are question marks in 2018.

I would not seek a 2/3 starter. I'd add a couple guys like Fister as depth in hopes we can find someone like the 2017 Fister.

I'd leave the pen untouched. Adding full seasons from Smith, Thornburg and Ross should enough.
