Just my little rant that I have to take. Every now and then, players that are ready to contribute don't get the chance because of the size of someone elses contract. I want the best players available to be on the roster. I know that it doesn't work that way always. Claiming that they provide depth or that they have remaining options as opposed to someone else who doesn't still just doesn't work for me. Oh well - I still get it.

It is unfair that guys with options sometimes end up being the odd man out, but it's also very important to maintain depth and flexibility. Teams that make it to the playoffs often do so not because of their David Prices, but because of who they have to replace their Prices when those players get injured. If you release your depth players before the season starts, it might come back to haunt you.

Maintaining depth and flexibility is of course very important. I also agree with you that it is very unfair in many cases. It just is the way it is I guess. The situations that I am talking about are when better players do not get opportunities that they probably deserve and have earned due to contract restrictions. Not talking stars here like a David Price. I would take hernandez everyday over rutledge.

I disagree that it's unfair.

It's a loooooooong season. Plenty of chsnces for all.

Just because a player isn't on the team in April doesn't mean he was dealt with unjustly. I know a lot of fans seem to think the 25th man was a higher priority than having proper depth. Last year I was a little disappointed to see a major leaguer have a minor tantrum over his demotion that was solely related to options. ...

The Rutledge situation is confusing. DD lets him go. He signs elsewhere as a FA. His new team leaves him unprotected and DD claims him with Rule V. He comes with limitations attached in that he has to stay on the ML roster all year long or he can be reclaimed by the other team. Is there a reason why DD, didn't just sign him instead of doing it this way?

He traded Rutledge away last July. The reason he didn't just sign Rutledge is that Rutledge wasn't a free agent and was still property of the Colorado Rockies, having signed a minor league deal with them 2 weeks earlier.

Now why DD didn't try to sign Rutledge before Colorado is anyone's guess. Perhaps he simply wasn't on the radar. ( And really, if he was, that's probably a bigger deal. I'm ok with Josh Rutledge being an afterthought.)

If DD thinks Rutledge is a better fielder at 3B and hits LHPs better tha Pablo and Hernandez, then I think the call is close enough to choose to start the season with Hernandez at AAA, and I'm one of Marco's biggest supporters. (I even suggested we look to trade Holt, so Marco would be on the 40 man roster as our utility IF'er.)

The time to trade Holt was probably three years ago after he made the all star team.

I think once they traded Shaw they wanted him back, no need for him until that trade happened.

Rutledge was with the team all year injured for most of it. When the sox had to take him off the 60 day disabled list either they had to add him to the 40 man roster or lose him. Colorado picked him up once we designated him for assignment.

Long season for sure- yada, yada, yada, sounds good for sure. Rutledge over Hernandez if that happens still seems unfair.

If Pomeranz can prove he's healthy your SR is right on the money. IMO Pomeranz is far from being out of the woods health wise. Jmo.

You mean 2015?

I still think Holt has higher trade value than his value to us, but I'm not for handing him away just to make room for Hernandez (Selsky and Rutledge).

We could see our 7th starter (Kendicks?) start as soon as game six, if Pom is not ready.

Although Red Sox first baseman/designated hitter Hanley Ramirez hasn’t been able to play the field this spring because of a shoulder issue, manager John Farrell doesn’t regard it as a serious injury, relays Rob Bradford of WEEI. “We feel like there’s been a little bit of a breakthrough here,” Farrell said Saturday. “We’re anticipating that throwing to continue to progress and ramp up. The goal, obviously, is still to get him games at first base while in camp, and we’re moving towards that.” Ramirez hasn’t been able to throw, but Farrell pointed out that “he still continues to drill work and ground balls at first base.”

If HanRam is not ready to play 1B by opening day, would keeping Travis on the 25 man roster make sense?

If yes, at whose expense? (Rutledge?)

Playing Moreland vs LHPs does make a lot of sense.

HanRam at DH full time might force Young into the OF with JBJ likely getting time off vs lefties with Beni getting a day off here and there.

Another alternative might be to trade 1 or two of these guys to make room for Hernandez, Selsky and/or Swihart:

Holt

Young

Leon or Vaz

Rutledge

Farrell is funny. A guy could lose a foot and he'd minimize it.

"John, the reports are that Christian Vasquez lost his foot while jet skiing in the ocean, do you have any comment?"

"Well, you know, Christian is making strides in his recovery. I see improvements every single day. I expect him back to normal pretty soon. He's making strides for sure."

"John, he lost a foot, right?. How can he be making strides?"

"Well, he's getting better day by day and with advances in technology and his ability to manage the pitching staff, I expect him to be back by the beginning of the season. No reason to worry at all."

Pomeranz left today's game with tricep soreness. Only pitching like four innings this spring. I think he may start the season on the DL. That is pure speculation on my part though. The Kendricks signing might come into effect here. But keep in mind he has an opt - out clause June 15 th. The month of June is a little while off but just thought I bring it up. After Pomeranz got the injection in the off season now he's got this going, I wonder if DD should have backed out of this deal when he had the chance.

Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright finally seems to be putting his long bout with right shoulder bursitis behind him, writes Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. Wright, a 2016 All-Star whose season ended in August after he injured his shoulder as a pinch-runner, threw three hitless innings against the Twins on Saturday. The 32-year-old indicated afterward that he’s “in good position to be ready for Opening Day.”

He is a turd with a damaged and weak arm. I expect nothing from him this season other than frustration and disappointment.

I suggested this near the end of last season but you and others objected.

Buch had runs of effectiveness and even dominance.

This guy is more like Henry Owens with a blip of success on his record.

Good thing we have so much starter depth!

Should have never made the trade to start with.

I understood the reasoning to make the trade at the time (wanting one last playoff run for Papi). I didn't agree with the player they traded for. Pom was a guy with an injury history and on a fluky stretch pitching in the NL West.

I'm the opposite. I didn't mind who they traded for, it's who they gave up I have a problem with. Pom was a good target in my opinion. And remember, there wasn't much out there at the time either.

I thought Pom was one of the best pitchers available (thinking he was healthy).

I still hated the trade from the first minute it was made.

Now, I'm double whammied.

Losing Clay you can handle. With Pomeranz being damaged goods is not.

I was watching the Baseball Show on Comcast Boston last night.

Price - DL arm

Smith - TJS
