On July 22nd (less than a month ago) he had a 2.56ERA and 19 saves. I think I would take a flier on him as out 6/7th inning guy. But what do I know......

the peripherals have been sagging - and he has not shown any sort of ability to do anything that doesn't involve being spoonfed saves

........isn't every save nowadays 'spoon fed'? What does that even mean? The closer is ALWAYS 'fed' the lead in the 9th inning and his job is to get 3 outs. Pretty much every closer in the last 10 years got fed the same thing. Gone are the Goose Gossage days of having to get 6 or more outs. Yes his numbers have been sagging and I'm pretty sure nobody thinks he should be the closer or the set up guy even. To me he'd be another solid and VERY experienced arm to come out of the BP to get a few outs in the 6th or 7th inning. How is that possibly a bad thing?

ERA is not a good stat to use for RP'ers, especially those that may come in to get one or two outs. It's a lot harder for one of your runs to score when you come in with 2 outs.

His WHIP is 1.457.

He's walking almost double the amount he did in the last 3 years combined.

His attitude is a wild card I do not wish to take a chance on.

The one area in the bullpen in which we are all set is closer. Kimbrel's been pretty good overall. If he loses it down the stretch, Ziegler's been pretty good overall as well, and Koji should be coming back soon, right?

I didn't mean Pap would take Kimbrel's spot as closer.... I meant take Taz's spot or if Koji doesn't come back strong. It looks unlikely that we'll pick him up now anyways so.

I'm with you on this too King. I think he's worth a look, considering the state that our pen is in. Who knows, being back in Boston might somehow 'revive' him.

I agree also. If he is healthy and the buy -in is reasonable he is worth a shot.

If we signed him, it would have to be with the understanding that he would not be the closer or even the set up guy. If he's not willing to accept that role, then it's a no go.

I think it's a no-go regardless at this point, but yeah I'd have looked for him to be our 7th inning guy.

It sounds like he's pretty well eliminated himself from the Sox with his "requirement" of an extra year on his contract. Or at least I hope he has.

maybe once no team meets this "requirement" he can revisit a rest of year contract with the Sox.

Always safe to agree with moonslav, but in this case I was agin Papelbon as soon as his name came up. I say this even though I think the Sox badly need bullpen help. I think it is clear he is only good for the 7th inning (or something) but will insist on being the closer. Kimbrel has his issues, but is a much better choice to close.

In a general sense, I think the Sox already have the team for the playoffs despite some imperfections. Was it moonslav who said every team has them?

Right now I like the hitting and the rotation (who woulda thunk it?) and kind of the defense even though the infield is not stellar. The bullpen is a worry, but can still work. When Wright returns, I see Kimbrel, Ziegler, Ross, Barnes, and Buchholz with maybe Abad and maybe Tazawa for junk innings.

3B is a weak point (defense and hitting), but not a big weak point. Outfield looks pretty good. Young's return will help, but I have my doubts about Hanigan helping. The lineup overall is the envy of the AL even with the so-so games against good pitchers. When Leon is catching against a righty starter, the bottom 4 are something like Bradley, Leon, Shaw, and Benintendi. My goodness, there some teams that would be happy with those 4 as their top 4.

Our 18-Sep game against the Yanks also starts at 3:33AM. Kind of an interesting innovation I think.

(B-R does have some amusing glitches sometimes.)

The do need relief pitching badly, but instead of just saying no to Papelbon, it's pretty easy for the Sox to make it clear that he's pitching the 7th and if he's lucky, the 8th.

If he says no, so do the Sox.

They need help too badly to say no to any pitcher with out a discussion.

so recently we had the discussion about the 1pm start time in Detroit and whether or not it was "fair". it was discussed that the home team (and not MLB baseball) has the final say on start times. if that is the case, could the Red Sox have a 3:33 am start time at Fenway if they wanted to?

There'd be a lot less traffic to deal with!

His requirement of an extra year is pretty silly, if you ask me. I can't imagine any team agreeing to that, but stranger things have happened. Either way, I agree with you and Emp that it's probably a no go.

You've been right a lot recently- more than I, so maybe I should start agreeing with you more often!

I think the Pap ship has sailed. Kelly seems to be doing the job with the Paw Sox so he would be my first option for another arm in the pen.
Kelly? Oh please no. That guy is a walking disaster.

If I had to pick, I would take my chances with Pap.

Papelbon may be a has been at this point, but Kelly is a never was.

The lack of news on Pap makes me think he is being a total jackass. He hasn't even pitched since August 6, so if and when he does sign with someone he will be rusty along with the concerns about his stuff.

Hadn't thought of that, but yeah, that time off now becomes a major concern. And there's no way he would agree to a rehab assignment, even for 2-3 days.

Or maybe he has an organic problem with his body that time off can heal?

Overall, I suspect that you are correct. It's more likely that Pap is being Pap. You know. A dope.

Pap? A jackass?? No! Say it ain't true!!

They guy has been jackass one way or another for his whole career. The difference is that when he was here he was OUR jackass and pitching well so we cut him slack.

There's not a whole lot of AAA season left to do a rehab.
