It's his third day on the job - I am okay with him being broken in gently - more to the point I am withholding judgment on these sorts of things for a little bit. If he is mothballed for the entire Dodgers series then eyebrows will be raised. I do agree with you - at least until Young returns (because Young is a proven lefty masher).

I'd hold him back a little if it looked like he needed to be eased in. His bat can play right now. Why hold off?

I'm with you.

There's no point in holding him back...he's a better defender than Bryce. He runs the bases better. Bryce is up there hacking away. Yes sometimes ball does find the bat.

John Farrell reminds me of a basketball coach that yanks out a guy that just hit 3 straight 3 pointers.

I'm hoping last night's game off was just an easement into the flow of MLB. If they are going to platoon Beni, then IMO, they shouldn't have called him up.

I don't think it's that rigid. The platoon is a good place to start and let the kid dictate whether he is ready for more.

I'm not sure how many righties we will face coming up, but I'd like to see Beni play against most lefties, at least until Young is back to form.

IMO, since they called him up, he should be playing in the majority of the games, ie, he should be an everyday player. Otherwise, what's the point?

I absolutely agree with this!!! Bringing him up and not playing him against lefties is ridiculous. If the powers to be truly felt that he is good enough to be here and help this club, he needs to be on the field.

Oh I agree - I am just not going to say much based on three nights evidence

Young will be back soon, he has an .846 OPS and they didn't pay him 6.5 * 2 to sit on the bench. Benintendi is in a platoon and that's just the way it is.

Saw a selfie of Benny today. This kid has a real strong upper body. He has some pretty big arms for his size and big hands.

Wish I had just seen the picture. i was 10 feet away from him in Portland and I'm thinking the camera might have made him appear a little larger than life. For his size, i bet that he is quite strong.

Actually, i'm not so sure Benintendi would have been called up if Young had not been injured. Good thing Young doesn't equal Craig, Sandoval, and Castillo i guess.

I think Beni was called up because they thought he would be an upgrade over Holt and wanted Holt back in his utility role.

Oh i agree. I'm just saying that if there had not been a series of injuries it is at least likely that he would not have been called up.

I also think that the constant lefty righty platoon that we see today is grossly overdone. There is a time and place to play the odds but i think that in many cases it provides a manager an easy way out that is easily defended and often represents a case of over coaching.

I also just don't like the idea of him sitting on the bench at all. A day of rest now and then like everybody else.

I said it at the time: Move reeks of desperation. Why bring him up if he won't play consistently? It's a waste of valuable development time.

Not to mention starting his "clock" when you didn't need to. If I had to guess, I'd say the only reason to do that would be if you were 200% confident that it didn't matter because Beni would be with the team permanently by the middle of next year anyway.

Panic move. They needed his glorious hair ever since Holt got butchered.

We face a righty today, lefty tomorrow and day off Monday. Will Farrell start him tomorrow against Hill? If not that'll be 2 more days off in a row. That'll go over well here.

Sox play every day from Aug 9 to Aug 31. Maybe we should give this a couple of weeks to see how it plays out...I think Beni will be playing a whole lot by the time it's all said and done.

Because Farrell is a tool and thinks he has to have L on L and R on R matchups pitching and opposite handed hitters all the time. He cant grasp the fact that some guys hit the same handed opponent well or can pitch just as good to the opposite handed opponent as the same handed...it frustrates me to no end.

Since returning from his concussion Holt has a slash line of .284/.354/.446/.800 -- perfectly adequate. I'm not in a hurry to play Benintendi at the expense of Holt right now, the chance that he'll improve on a .800 OPS line at this stage in his career is substantially less than the chance of Holt continuing to play adequately.

They should let him get regular reps in AAA then...platooning the kid is doing nothing for his development...i had no objection to his promotion, but dont sit the kid every other game or vs LHP.

Benintendi is a good outfielder and is insurance should any of our outfielders need a rest or get hurt. In addition, he looked good enough hitting to be called up. Betts, Pedroia and Bogaerts all face right handed pitching, so why not get Benintendi regular reps against right and left handers unless and until he shows he can't handle it. He's only had 7 AB's in the majors and lots of guys are claiming it is a mistake to call him up. Have a little patience and give the kid a break.

Absolutely fair statement. I'll reserve judgment until we've had more time to see how this plays out.

That said, I was against bringing him up in the first place, unless our situation became dire, which it hasn't. I'm not saying that he can't handle it, just saying that I don't think it was necessary.

I do much prefer Holt in his utility role over being the everyday LFer.
