Beware of Abad's peripherals, which are not very flattering.

That said, I have no issue with giving up Light for him.

He has struggled lately but he has done well against lefties all year.

I am not displeased with the trade. I honestly don't know a lot about Abad, but was just noticing his overall numbers.

You will be pleased to know that I came to the same conclusion after looking at his record!!!

See. I do value stats!!!:P

I am good with the moves that Dombrowski made and presumably did not make. He added some pieces that should strengthen our playoff chances this year and next, and he did not gut the farm.

Yes, sometimes the trade not made is the best one. DD is doing a good job of getting value without giving up the farm.

They wanted benintendi. Benintendi, rodriguez, devers and another prospect should be enough. We will see if the white sox get a better deal then that from someone else.

I'd have given those three, if the 4th one was not Moncada or Swihart. If it was Kopech, I could probably live with it.

Again, I'd rather have Quintana than Sale.

The package the Sox offered was Benintendi and ERod plus. ChiSox said no. ChiSox wanted 3 top prospects plus more.

I'm not doubting you, but where did you hear this?

Both major radio stations in Boston said it during drive time.

What's plus more? Devers? Kop? They wanted swihart and they said no. Seems like the white sox got a little full of themselves.

Haven't heard the ChiSox asked about Swihart, just Beni and ERod plus other unnamed guys.

@philrogers Yoan Moncada viewed as unlikely piece in Chris Sale talks. Potential @RedSox package leads w/Andrew Benintendi, Eduardo Rodriguez.

Thanks.

I'm living down here in Texas and only read about things.

Many saw ERod as our best bet to fill the #2 slot this season. Now, we just need him to be a reliable 5th starter.

Unless Pomernaz and Wright "right the ship" soon, he may become our #3 starter by the end of the mnoth.

Steven will Wright the ship soon. Worry not.

I agree. I've always advocated he be given a full chance at a rotation slot. I'm glad he finally got his chance.

If I'm counting correctly, the Sox 40-man is full. At least as of a few minutes ago, Benintendi is not on it, so who goes to make room?

Brentz is staying with the big club for now, so it's not him. Martinez/Marerro? Or does one of the underperforming pitchers go instead (Layne, Johnson, Owens).

Martinez and Layne were DFA'd.

Yeah just saw that. Sox haven't updated anything on their website.

Layne must be out of options since Abad took Light's spot on the 40 man.

Leaves the 40 man at 39 right now. Might herald a Moncada September call-up without having to do another move. Or that Swihart may be back in September?

Why both to add one player?

Maybe Moncada ... and there is still waiver trades. For instance, if they wanted an innings eater like James Shields - they could probably get him for a sack of potatoes without anybody putting a claim on him.

I'm still open to a Pablo (and some cash) for Sheilds trade, but that may be a winter idea.

We could still possibly trade Buch as a waiver deal to make room for Moncada, but I don't see Moncada as ready to play any position of need, so he'll wait until September or 2017 for his call-up.

Also, we have several guys we can DFA with no hard feelings:

Brentz- once Young is healthy

Cuevas

Jerez

N Ramirez

Soxprospects has Beni and Abad on the roster, but just 39 names listed.

Probably a moot point now that Benintendi is up, but would anyone have taken/take a flyer on Yasiel Puig? Sounds like he is there for the taking if any team wants him...though I'm not sure the headaches would be worth it.

Personally Flap I say screw that...Puig is obviously in the major head case category.

Yeah, I agree...and I'm sure we don't even know the half of it. It's just amazing to see how far he's fallen in just a couple of years.

I'm still open to a Pablo (and some cash) for Shields trade, but that may be a winter idea.

James Shields had far more trade value than Pablo Sandoval last offseason and the difference in value has widened this season.

Shields remains under team control through 2019 (unless the righthander opts out after this season) with only a team option for the final year. At the time of his trade in June, the Padres were to pay about $30 million of the $57 million remaining on the Shields contract.

Shields had a horrific start this season en route to his current fWAR of 0.4, but has an ERA of 2.94 over his last eight starts. ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project fWAR between 0.5 and 0.8 over his final 11 starts this year.

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=7059&position=P

Meanwhile, coming off a baseball-worst negative 2.0 fWAR in 2015, this year Sandoval underwent season-ending surgery after posting a negative 0.2 fWAR in only three games. ZiPS curiously projects Sandoval with 0.1 fWAR in 33 games the rest of the season.

With nearly $60 million remaining in is contract after this season, Sandoval may have the worst contract in baseball. Any trade of Sandoval would require that the Red Sox add a player of significant value to offset Sandoval's negative value.

An equivalent trade might be Hanley Ramirez (in the Shields role) for Prince Fielder (in the Sandoval role), a trade the Red Sox would never do.

Would the Red Sox trade Ramirez for Shields? Would the Red Sox trade Sandoval for Fielder? Those are the tougher questions.

Only worse contract was Pablo's with $80 million remaining at the beginning of this year. dws
