I've gotta say....

I don't understand all this business about hesitating trading Beni for Sale, and I'm not devaluing Beni when I say that. We now have two outstanding OF'ers. What the team needs is a mediocre defensive OF'er who can hit for power to fill the LF, and Beni doesn't fill that profile. I know, good numbers this year and all, but I'm suspicious of someone who's

There's nothing wrong with two teams making a trade that benefits both teams. Beni would be a good fit in Chicago and Sale would be a good fit here. I'm not suggesting a one-for-one (although I would! :)) but IMO Beni should be the centerpiece with maybe Pom and a respectable MiL're throw in. Butler, anyone?

You and I have both seen Benintendi and it is obvious that he isn't 6' tall nor is he anywhere near 200bs. That being said, he still intrigues me. i'm a big Moncada guy but he might be further away then Benintendi. I guess at the end of the day, they are both prospects and in the face of withering criticism(lol), I say again - We tend to over value our prospects. It might be in my case because I really don't know what everybody else has.

Think of it this way, the average fan let alone Sox fan ever hears of other teams failed prospects. Can anyone in here name 5 prospects in other teams organizations let alone one??? We don't see other teams Henry Owens, we don't see other teams Allen Websters, we don't see their Lars Andersons.....we only know who they are when they turn into JBJ's and Mookie Betts.

If anything, other teams prospects fail more often than our own.

"...Chicago is seeking “at least” four young players from Boston, including “three of [their] best.” - Jon Heyman

I might give Benintendi, Swihart or Devers, Kopech and Owens/Johnson

Is that "three of our best" good enough?

Would Beni, Swi & Devers be enough?

Between the two, I'd take Quintana as well - extra year of control, should be cheaper. Don't know if that's on the table right now or not.

Agreed, and if the return would be less to get Quintana over Sale, I'd try harder to make it happen.

If we give up Benintendi I like trying to develop Swihart in LF. I'd give up EROD/Benintenid/Kopech/Devers. It's a heavy package.....but we've seen what the market for pitching is.

If Moncada is not one of the players going to the CWS, my guess is they are asking for:

Benintendi

and 3 (I doubt just two would get it done) from...

Swihart

Devers

Kopech

ERod

Pomeranz

I've also mentioned the advantage of having Swihart on the 25 man roster as a 3rd string catcher plus LF (and maybe even 1B). Wec ould easily PH for Vazquez or Leon and not stress over a catcher injury late in a game.

I might hesitate to give up 4 from that list, but Kopech's character issues worry me, so I don't mind sending him.

Devers is likely blocked by Moncada, but with Shaw looking like a platoon player, and HanRam likely moving to DH, there could easily be room for both Devers and Moncada in our IF. Plus, without Beni, I think Moncada would give Swihart/Young/Holt a run for their money as the FT LF'er before too long. I realize you have to give to get, so Devers is probably a must in any non-Moncada deal to get a CWS ace.

ERod or Pomeranz? Hmmm... Giving up Pomeranz is like including Espinoiza in the deal, but I like ERod's upside more than Pomeranz's small sample size of "proven" goodness.

Would I give Beni, Devers, Kopech & Pomeranz?

Wow, that's a close call. For Quintana, I'd probably say yes. For Sale, I'd probably fight to the very end to get the CWS to take Travis and Lakins/Owens/Johnson instead of Kopech or Pomeranz, but in the end, I'd probably say yes.

Quintana and Sale's contracts are so affordable, we could affors to sign Encarnacion and 2 good RP'ers next winter and probably still be below the luxury tax limit.

I'd say no in a heartbeat, if these guys made $24+M a year.

I don't disagree with you much here. Maybe your last sentence, because without doing the research (which you probably will now do), I don't accept the generalization that our prospects are better than everybody elses.

Dodgers To Acquire Josh Reddick, Rich Hill

By Jeff Todd | August 1, 2016 at 11:56am CDT

The Dodges and A’s are in agreement on a deal that will bring Josh Reddick and Rich Hill to Los Angeles and send young righty Jharel Cotton to Oakland, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

So, you disagree with national ranking services who place an inordinate amount of Sox prospects in the top 40 and top 100?

sources: fernando abad traded to red sox, pending medicals

Abad has struggled lately. I wonder who they gave up for him.

Saw something about Pat Light; if so, a good deal IMO

Wasn't light pitching well? Abad has struggled since the all star game.

Don't know about Light. 17 walks and 21 hits in 31 innings at Pawtucket. Lot's of walks last year as well.

Sox need a lefty specialist. Don't know what your definition of struggle is. Abad since the break 5 games, 5 1/3 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 3 Ks. All five appearances were a minimum of 1 inning. I can live with that.

So would you guys do the rumored potential deal for Sale with Beninitendi and ERod as the headliners?

My guess is a couple few guys, names like Basabe, Owens, Chavis, Doubon, or they may even ask for Devers, could be involved.

So just say its along the lines of ERod, Benni, Basbae and Devers. Probably another name as well. Im guessing if it were something like this it would be five guys with two or three Headliners.

I dont know how much and who they (CWS) value in our system. What I do know is they had a bunch of scouts the last week scattered around single A Greenvile thru Pawtucket getting a good look at our prospects.

Edit:Just heard they are not discussing Sale anymore from Joel Sherman. Oh well...I would have done that deal for the record.

I absolutely would not. I've seen too many pitchers fizzle out or get injured. It's not worth the asking price

I'd try to get them to swap Kopech and Owens/Johnson for ERod

Sale and Quintana are just 27, so all their years of team control are within their prime.

They are both being paid less that $15M a year, so the risk is not as great as a $30M/yr risk.

It's a gamble, yes, but it's a gamble to say no as well.

For me it's not about the salary, but the players we'd be giving up.

I don't know too much about this guy.

[h=2]Red Sox Acquire Fernando Abad[/h] By Steve Adams | August 1, 2016 at 12:23pm CDT

The Red Sox have struck a deal with the Twins to acquire left-handed reliever Fernando Abad in exchange for hard-throwing right-handed relief prospect Pat Light, the teams announced.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/files/2016/08/Abad.Fernando-2-240x300.jpg

Abad, 30, joined the Twins on a minor league deal this offseason and has performed quite well with Minnesota, pitching to a 2.65 ERA with 7.7 K/9, 3.7 BB/9 and a 45.2 percent ground-ball rate in 34 innings of work. He’s admitted to having been bothered by a minor back issue in early July/late June, but the medicals clearly checked out in this case. That’s perhaps not surprising, as Abad never landed on the disabled list and has been used frequently by the Twins as of late, suggesting that any such troubles are behind him.

Left-handers are batting a woeful .163/.192/.265 against Abad this season, so he’ll provide manager John Farrell with a legitimate weapon against lefty bats in late-game settings. And, while he’s been markedly worse against righties, Abad has held his own against opponents that hold the platoon advantage, limiting them to a .257/.360/.351 batting line. While the OBP is a concern there, he hasn’t allowed right-handed hitters to generate much power against him. Abad is earning $1.25MM this season and is under club control through the 2017 campaign via arbitration, so he represents more than just a rental pickup for president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who has now bolstered his roster with summer pickups of Aaron Hill, Drew Pomeranz, Brad Ziegler and Abad.

Light, 25, was the 37th overall pick in the 2012 draft and made his big league debut with Boston this season, tossing just 2 2/3 innings in a pair of relief appearances. Light was rocked for seven earned runs in that time but is a fairly well-regarded prospect within the Red Sox ranks, rating 10th on Baseball America’s midseason rankings and 14th on MLB.com’s same version of that list. Light’s fastball reaches triple digits on occasion and sits in the 94-98 mph range, per MLB.com’s report, and BA calls his fastball a “special” pitch. His control remains a work in progress, but MLB.com notes that the addition of an above-average splitter has helped his results take off in the minors. Light has a 2.32 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 31 innings at Triple-A this season but has also walked 17 hitters (one unintentional) in that time.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports first reported that the Red Sox were getting Abad. (Twitter link). Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that the Twins were receiving Light in return (via Twitter).
