Hembree has wipeout stuff. I'm surprised he'd never stuck around in the Majors before. Command issues, perhaps?
I saw him I'm Spring Training briefly. He was all over the place walking batters. My recollection is that he was taken out in the middle of an inning which is rare in ST for a reliever. I could be mistaken. He was demolishing batters last night. It is the second time that he has pitched 3 innings for us in a short span. Does he have potential to get stretched out for a starting role? He threw almost 50 pitches last night.

Yeah.

I mean what I'd do is (on Buchholz and Owens/Kelly starts) is plan for a Barnes or Hembree to come in - I mean have them sort of rested like starters. Starter does not get more than two trips through the order. Let Hembree or Barnes get through the next trip through the order, then hand it off. So you'd think in terms of 30-50 pitch outings and prepare for it. It is outside the box a little, so it won't happen.

I think that's exactly what Farrell was doing last night with Owens starting--preparing for a disaster. Remember, when he brought Barnes in, there was a man on first in the 4th inning, but the Sox were leading, 5-3.

In general that is also what long relievers are for--contingencies. Right now the Sox like to keep Tazawa, Uehara, and Kimbrel on hand for the final three innings when the Sox are ahead or tied or maybe just 1 run down. The other four relievers are for both long relief and for spelling the "big three" because they can't pitch every game.

True - I believe in making it less situational ...

Steven Wright is no joke.

When you can throw the knuckler for strikes it can do good things. Ride it while you can. You have to bet he will turn into a pumpkin at some point, but there is no reason he can't crank out consistent decent starts.

I'll be fine with a Steve Wright who finishes the year with an ERA in the high 3's and who the majority of his starts were quality starts. So far he's exceeding expectations. He'll come back to earth, but he may take his time, he's very very confident right now.

Steven Wright... 4 starts, 4 quality, 1.37 ERA. He had an easy matchup against Atlanta today, but he's done well against the Jays, Jays and Astros in his other starts.

I don't know about everyone else, but its exciting to have a new cost-controlled starter on the team.

But not even Nostradamus could have expected this level of quality from Wright/Porcello (and this is coming from a guy who likes them both).

A large amount to be positive about at the moment.

Shaw and Hanley are both playing very good defence.

Shaw is hitting better than we'd hoped.

Porcello has settled and produced good outings so far.

Wright is pitching superbly.

The line up is very dangerous and capable of scoring big most games.

Very early days, and there will be injuries and slumps to come, but there is a lot to be excited about.

Certainly. I mean (assuming health) I think we have 3 starters who can consistently crank out competitive outings. Now 6 IP and 3 runs is not good in a global ERA perspective - but that is a start which this team can work with. I am not sure the extraordinary teamwide strikeout rate can hold.

I'm a transplant from BDC and this is my first post here. Please bear with me while I figure out all the nuances of this platform. Old dog

That's a 4.5 ERA but it's still only three runs, and the way our bullpen and offense are looking that's going to win us a lot of games.

How goes it S5?!?!?!! Good to see you here my friend! The format here is WAY better than at the BDC but yes....there is a learning curve as I am still finding out. I think you'll enjoy it here. I'm done at BDC.....it wont let me log in so I never had a chance to say goodbye!

Howdy King! As you noticed, I kept part of my old BDC name when I came over here so my old friends would recognize me. Glad to see that it's working! I'm liking this format, in fact I haven't found anything about the format here that I like less than the old BDC one. I still have a lot to learn here -like is there a more appropriate place to post a personal message?! - but I'm working on it. The regulars here seem to be ready to accept the new blood as well as being patient while we learn our way around, and it's much appreciated.

BTW, you're moving up quickly in this world. You've only been here a week or so and you're in AA already! :-)

Great. Thanks for the help!

The 4.5 ERA in a quality start sounds worse than it is, IMO. A 4.5 ERA isn't flattering, but a quality start always means that your team has a good chance to win. I'm happy with that on most nights.

It is very difficult to make the playoffs with a team ERA above 4. It has been very rare in recent years as the steroid age moves further into the past.

A rotation with a 4.00 ERA backed by a bullpen with a better one - that is workable. What Buchholz is doing is well ... not that.

a QS means a lot, 6 inning+, keeping the team in the game. If our starters did that, we'd be about 16+ wins now with our offense + bullpen.

it's easier now to make the playoff thank to that 2nd WC.

The format has worked for years over at NYY Fans:

Welcome to the forum! I'm not sure, but I think this may be the first time we've had harmony here.

Some loving for our Mod.....
