And I don't understand why some people need to keep beating the dead horse. There's nothing else that can be said on the subject but some people have an odd need to keep saying it anyway.

Warning!!!!! Do not read if easily offended! *************

It's called venting, as the subject was brought up again. S5 nailed after the nancies decided to go on a defense initiative. It's absolutely a thorn in my paw to know how badly we needed a 2-3 pitcher, yet we have 19M a year tied up in this clown. Decent enough guy, but in my opinion he likes to get high & eat far more than he likes to be there for his team. Bottom line. It's a very conscious choice he makes all day, every day. He's also been more than deceptive about it in his run ups to contract time. HE CAN DO IT when there is a pile of money on the line. He's done it multiple times. But he always gets the money first, then let's down & binge eats.

Sorry. We vent. The nancies get defensive of the guy who is screwing us all. Go figure. Hey! Screw him. I'm to the age I have to fight every day to stay in shape. Weight runs in my family, so I know how hard it is. Not sveldt anymore, but I stay looking pretty trim. It's a daily battle. Some fight it, & some give in constantly. It's a battle, but still a choice. It's NOT A god damned addiction as so many nancies want everyone to believe. Hey! How about all those same god damned nancies who want to demonize & vilify smokers, who actually are addicted? The very same loving tolerant nancies when it comes to weight will absolutely crucify smokers. Unless it's Panda sparkin yet another fatty? Then it's all good. Man I miss the smell & taste of that Ganga Pablo! M

Please excuse the gratuitous venting!

It's harmless to vent and it makes you feel better.

Is it quite possible that he really can't help himself?

Do you blame people with depression for being depressed?

Please spare us the specious arguments. Yes! Of course we're all heartless bastards who hate fat people & anyone with mental illness.

Talk about problems.... There shold be a whole section in the mental health codes just for growing up in a family of Southies!

;)

You got anger problems? ;)

I just don't get all this defense of Pablo, sure, he is a decent enough guy, but he is paid more money per year then the average person will make in there life to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Everytime someone sucks at their job or does something stupid, its a disorder.. "Oh he drove drunk, he was depressed" "oh he murdered someone, insanity". Like come on, Pablo was a productive player, signed a HUGE deal, gained more weigh and now cant do his job, now its a disorder? I guess the pressure of making too much money made him fatter?

And he waited until he secured his financial future before he let himself go completely. That suggests to me that he had some control. People can't time their depressions.

I am so sick of everything being called a disorder. The one that really kills me is sex addiction. A friend of mine made a great point. You will never find a single guy in rehab for sex addiction. There isn't a single guy who will ever go to rehab because he is having too much sex with too many women. He might write a book, but he isn't going to rehab. In rehab, you will find married or engaged guys that got caught. For married and engaged guys, it is a condition... an addiction, but single guys are ladies men?

As for eating addictions, there are plenty of ways to enjoy food but eat healthy. If self-control is an issue, he had plenty of means and opportunity to hire people to look after his needs at a very small cost. I don't equate being fat with a mental disorder beyond someone's control. He clearly kept it under control until the ink was on the contract. There is no such control with depression or other mental conditions.

The thing is that eating disorders are often the result of depression or anxiety, which you can't control.

Also, I am not trying to absolve Pablo of any responsibility. That was never my intention.

My defense of Pablo has been for 2 points:

1. He should have been given a chance to start this season.

2. Just because he came to camp fat does not mean he is lazy, selfish, doesn't care, etc.

I think there's actually only one person defending Pablo. She sure does put up a good fight though.

Some people don't know the difference between trying to reasonably understand something and defending something they feel strongly opposed to. Those who don't chime in on the emotional attacks are seen as defending the attacked.

Now wait a minute here! Sandoval was given every chance to start this season. He was the prohibitive favorite to be the 3rd baseman on opening day - and he blew it. The issue isn't his size or the strength of his belt, it's that 1) Sandoval didn't play well and 2) Travis Shaw outplayed him in ST.

The ONLY justification for Sandoval starting at 3rd on opening day would be that he was making so much money he had to play, which is very possibly the worst reason for someone to be starting.

I'm willing to buy the rest of your defense that he's always "played large" when he was 'large' but please don't be telling me that he wasn't given every chance this spring.

Not at all. Just don't get your panties in a bundle when some of us come to pretty logical conclusions based on his first year, his unbelievable return to ST, and his continued attitude seemingly detached & indifferent attitude about losing his job to a rookie. Surely you'd admit that it's a bit beyond bizarre? If he were here, i'd be nice to him, but i'd ask a few questions.....

Like... don't you think it's clear by now that your weight has been a factor in your performance here in Boston? Don't you see that your weight is clearly limiting your movement and leading to ever increasing injuries? Don't you think for 19M you owe the Sox following through on getting in much better shape when you were clearly asked to do so? Don't you think you owe the Boston fans a bit more effort? Were you unaware of how unhappy Sox fans were last year? Do you know that many thought you sure looked high on many occasions, hanging all over certain other players on the bench, seemingly oblivious to the collapse of a team around you? Did you not understand that the FO gave you early walking papers, supposedly to get an early start on "rehabm" & to get in shape? Tell us about how you & your old trainer would hide your weight in the run up to contract negotiations? Do you believe you can cling to the story of no weight issues, given your history of hiding massive weight gains that would "undermine negotiations with the SF FO," as your old trainer put it? Do you see how Boston fans who have gotten less than nothing from you for 19M / yr. guaranteed salary? Can you see how most Boston fans who have struggled through 2 brutal 14 & 15 seasons might take it personally that you are one of the 2 highest paid position players on this team, but you've done nothing to earn it? That to many, it's tantamount to pissing on the uniform these fans live, eat, sleep, breathe, bleed for year after year, for 50, 60, 70, years? Can you understand why, after hearing from JF in January that you had lost 20+ pounds & were in great shape, that RSN would feel more than betrayed & lied to? What do you say to fans who question your heart, self-discipline, work ethic, teamsmanship, honesty, & chsracter, after hearing how you have had a long history of hiding a controllable weight problem? That we do see you doing nothing to seek help, and infer that you are a selfish & indulgent person for putting so little out for this team, all while happily taking the money & continuing to stuff your face?

Just a few questions I might ask him in a pleasant sit down interview. Perhaps at Chatchki's?

He was given a chance. it was his job to lose and he lost it.

His character doesn't matter to me. I will not attack it, but that doesn't change my opinion that at this point, Sandoval is a $90 million bag of garbage. That is not a personal attack on him, but commentary on his performance.

Still waiting for proof that Pablo is "high". First it was hanram that was stoned all the time and now it's Pablo?!?

But by all means..... those who don't want to jump on board with the "bashing," please feel free to jump off. Just please try to be a bit more tolerant with those of us who wanted another "pound of flab," after hearing about his season ending injury.

I just don't want to see his blurry eyes hanging all over, & distracting our young guys who are putting it all out on the field to rebuild a winning organization. The FO is listening to fans. If they see we have had it with some of this shyte, they will respond. Make no mistake! The reason we got Shaw at 3rd was because of fans like us. Fans who were mad as hell, & weren't going to take any more. You can all say thank you any time you like.

No need for proof Slash. I know what my eyes clearly saw on many occasions last year. Besides, it's not a statement of fact, it's an opinion.

Good to see you my friend. I mean that! Love mixing it up with you. So glad the election season is over!!!!! ;)

I wasn't wrong about Hanley, but SO GLAD to eat Crow over his efforts at 1st base, and his clear "team first" attitude on hitting. He could have 8+ HR by now, but he has done exactly what Chili asked of him. I could not be more pleased with Hanley! GREAT ATTITUDE this year. !

His weight never prevented him from becoming a very successful MLB player with three championship rings. That fact is more important than anything else. How many people feel compelled to change when they have been successful all along? I don't take his failure in Boston personally because I have no idea how much effort he has put in to trying to be successful since coming here. He is actually embarrassing only himself and his professional reputation with his poor performance. At present he is injured, as Hanley was last season. I can't blame a player for getting injured. I have, as do all of us, no information on his personal life or his character as a human being. My panties are quite comfortable, thank you. How about yours?

Doing good DD! Cotton boxers are the secret.

Good to see you here!

I agree. IMHO a lot of RSDD's very good points are being overshadowed by his assertion that Sandoval was "smoked up". The arguments would be a lot more credible if he'd focus on what we all know and can see.

Seeing that they are tested often and the fact that a bunch of guys have been caught already this year, i highly doubt he was "getting high"

Also...Opinions are usually based on facts and information...someone who just throws stuff against the wall just to see if it will stick is just stirring the pot and looking for the "hot take"

I do enjoy your posts though. Once i can sift through all the "opinions" And get to the valid points...

Personally i am guilty of calling him "the Butterball". a different poster at BDC came up with the name and it makes me chuckle everytime.

i am also guilty of supporting the signing when it happened. while i agreed it was an overpay i figured FO came to the conclusion it was worth it because of all the "panda" merch they expected to sell to fans. he was a fan favorite in SF - especially with the kids. and after all this is a business. i also thought he would play above avg defense and be avg with the stick. in reality he wasnt terrible offensively once he gave up batting RH. obviously the 21 pounds he gained in 21 days over Xmas murdered his 2016 season. the phantom shoulder injury saves face i suppose. he needs to make a life change for his eating habits. and as kimmi pointed out it very well could be disease/eating disorder/depression driven. i hope he gets the help he needs. in the meantime we have Shaw and he is doing a great job at 3rd and at minimum salary.

A few years back many fans were of the opinion that JD Drew didn't care and wasn't a team player. It was just opinions and had no factual basis. Same with the above with the attacks on the character and personal integrity of Pablo. Any fool can have a baseless opinion.

Slash, people don't undergo shoulder surgery for a "phantom" injury and any doctor that would perform one would be guilty of malpractice. A guy like Dr. Andrews is certainly not going to put his or his practice's reputation on the line for that.

True. My take on Drew is that he was/is an extreme introvert. He wanted to do his job and go home. He didn't want to deal with the press on either good days or bad ones. He didn't wear his emotions on his sleeve ala David Ortiz, and so he appeared not to care. But it takes all types to make a team, 25 guys with personalities like Ortiz would not work and neither would 25 Drews.

Many years ago, the Sox had another outfielder who, if given his druthers, would have done the same thing, and was also accused at times of not caring. He had the nickname of Yaz.
