Panda is one of those players that many of us didn't want at the time, but he certainly has his value. That just doesn't happen to be home run power.

Middlebrooks is a AAAA hitter who ran into a few balls so far this year, and is going to look much less appealing once the NL catches up to his inability to hit offspeed pitches. Panda's OBP in 2015 is .389 compared to WMB's .269 -- That should tell you something.

Middlebrooks sucks. AAAA is a fair description.

I was surprised that the Red Sox are middle of the pack in quality starts, given the starters were last in ERA before today. That's something to build on, I guess.

It always helps to have a strong offense. Middle of the pack pitching and top tier offense is still acceptable.

High end offense and suspect pitching was our MO from 04-08. We made the playoffs 4 of those 5 years, but didn't see the WS once and only won a round once. You can bash your way to the post season, but good pitching will shut down good hitting in October.

Masterson dug us out of the cellar. Our starters are now 29th in ERA!

For all the talk of our starters not getting deep enough into games, they have not been that bad.

A couple of stats I read on another site: The average AL SP goes 5.57. The average for the RS is 5.53. Yes, it would be nice if they went deeper, but it hasn't been as bad as some people are making it out to be.

Also, if you take out the marathon extra-inning game against the Yankees, the Sox are also right about average in terms of innings pitched by the BP so far, so it's not like the starters are wearing the pen out at an extraordinary rate.

While I agree that good pitching is the key in the post season (and that does not mean that a team needs an ace), the key is to get there first. In a short series, anything can and does happen. Besides that, it is very unlikely that the rotation we have now is the rotation we will see in the playoffs, provided that the Sox get there.

Got to be in it to win it.

The Sox have scored 19 unearned runs in 14 games. Not that I'm complaining, but it would be nice if they could actually get a hit with RISP. They are batting .204 with RISP (3rd from last in MLB), and they have been woeful in that regard in the past 4 games or so. It's been frustrating to watch.

OTOH, it's great that the offense hasn't really gotten it going yet, and we're still winning games.

I was hinting at this earlier today.

Really, most of the primary players have not "hit" their stride yet.

Also, be careful what you say about the lack of hitting with RISP. You are likely to ignite accusations of a lineup full of chokers!

You mean like Xander "Unclutch" Bogaerts?

To me major league baseball gets more befuddling all the time. We were all laughing our asses off at how bad the Yankees offense would be, and here they are second in the league in scoring.

Sad isn't it? While we're not hitting worth s*** right now.

LOL I remember all the rants about Bogaerts last year.

I'm confused though. How is it possible for Mr. Clutch Ortiz to only be batting .077 with RISP, and even worse, batting .000 with 2 outs and RISP? Sounds like a choker to me. ;)

They've really been ticking me off too.

hey Kimmi I agree. He sure is no 1967 Yaz but maybe he just doesn't feel the sense of urgency in April that he has felt in October.

Just messing around about Ortiz. It's way too small a sample to draw any conclusions. That said, I'm sure the atmosphere in October is far different than it is in April.

Had a hunch you were kidding. So was I sort of. I will say though that I have not seen anything quite like Yaz in 67.

I don't think anybody ever has.

With Edward Mujica struggling and his velocity down, CSNNE.com’s Sean McAdam wonders if the Red Sox might eventually release Mujica and eat the roughly $4MM remaining on his contract rather than let the righty continue in an important relief role.* In my opinion, releasing Mujica would be a hasty move this early in the season since his xFIP (2.78) and SIERA (2.50) hint that he isn’t that badly, and his 4.70 ERA or 6.90 FIP are due to a couple of wildly inflated peripherals (most notably, 3.52 HR/9).
Wow, it sounds like we couldn't get a bag of old balls for the guy. Edited by a700hitter

You have to wonder how many more AB's they can give Craig. In a Red Sox uniform he's hitting 133/235/183.

It is possible that the Sox will give Craig an entire season to prove he still has a bat.

Are we on the hook for all of the $20 mil after this year? If so, that's your answer.
