And of course a side benefit is this will prevent the Yankees from signing him for this year.

Cool.

I can almost unequivocally guarantee you that he is a Yankee next yr. I don't think he was worth a draft pick plus his contract demands. He'll be the second best SS prospect on the market with Ramirez setting the market. But Drew is a Yankees style player, especially with the lefty bat in the stadium.

But he would have cost the Yankees a pretty low draft pick this year.

I don't doubt it.

Why won't the Yankees go after Hanley?

Hanley doesn't fit the profile. Impatient, injury prone, right handed, SS with declining speed skills who is going to want 10 yrs. I think Drew is a Yankee for 4 and $48M next yr

But it would have helped the Red Sox and would have taken Jeter off the diamond. Next yr, you don't have to worry about that

I'm all for giving he young guys their shot but I think this move probably came at the right time. I'm not sure how long we can play badly in the hope WM and XB find their groove. And waiting until after, or even much closer to, the draft would certainly be risky/costly.

I still think with Will and Xander we have two players with higher ceilings, lower salaries and more years of team control so I'm still holding out hope we don't trade WM.

Also, do Herrera and/or Middlebrooks have options left?

Probably there was no alternative. But I don't see how signing a platoon player who tends to hit in the low .200's is going to turn things around.

He was brought in really to solidify the left side of the infield. With the revolving door at third base, the production was terrible there, so now you get consistent production from both positions. I didn't say 'high' production, just consistent. The pitchers are happy as they now have their WS-winning infield. It doesn't fix the offense but goes a long way to getting a more consistent defense and line-up. And Drew is a better hitter than anyone that was playing 3B this year. Certainly better situationally, and he did hit 13 homers last year (and he bats .283 in Fenway). So it's really a smart move on a couple of different levels.

The low .200's? The last time he was under .250 was 2007, his first full year.

If you DFA Herrera, no one will claim him.

If he did not get claimed, I bet he would sign on with an independent league team in Colorado.

I know that I would!!!!!!

The grass is always greener in that state.

Well, you're right. The only time I watched him closely at the plate was during last year's post-season, where he looked as bad as any ML hitter I've ever seen. The other times I looked for him, he was generally on the DL or on the bench. Let's just hope he plays well enough this year so that we can go through the same 'qualifying offer' routine we did this year (am I right that you can do this for consecutive years?)

No, he will be an unrestricted FA in 2015, no qualifying offer, no draft pick tied to him.

QOs only apply to players who've been with the team for the entire season so Drew wouldn't qualify. I think someone signed on the second day of the season this year just so they wouldn't be tied into a draft pick if they were offered a QO at the end of the year.

Should never have gotten to this point.

They never got the draft pick compensation.

They saved a grand total of 4 million dollars.

They are 5 games below .500, two months in. Was it worth it?

They got complacent after winning the WS, imo. They shouldn't have won the WS.

Ah yes. Winning is ALWAYS bad. Fortunately, when I started watching them in the 50s, that really wasn't a problem.

I don't understand how they got complacent. They had a plan which they have executed, but the results have not been what anyone expected. How does that equal complacency?

Can we all just stop for the moment and realize as bad as it has been they are only 5 games out of 1st place. They rolled the dice with the youngsters for 2 months and didn't win. But they didn't lose either. They are not out of it and there is plenty of baseball left to get it straightened out. Yes some things need to be tinkered with, but it's not like they went with the youngsters and became the Houston Astros and the season is lost already.

Well, last year seemed to work with Bogaerts at 3B and Drew at SS. WMB has never done a thing to earn a starting 3B spot and should have been dealt in the offseason which I suggested multiple times at the end of last season. He had little value then, he has zero now. Bogaerts is not a SS. He had a reputation in the minors as a below average SS and he played himself out of the position this year.

We might be in a better position right now if we didn't have to deal with the WMB's, Ryan Roberts and Brock Holts of the world who literally produce nothing stacked ahead of a LF that produces nothing, and a CF that produces nothing. Drew would have at least given them some defensive stability that would have allowed Xander to play 3B.

Obviously:

Peavy was to busy riding his duckboat to train in the offseason.

Lester got poopy pants because of his WS performance but not getting a bigger paycheck.

Lackey's reclamation project finished so now he's swimming in Bud Light.

Ortiz got an extension so now doesn't have to hit until next year.

Napoli is still shirtless and drunk on Boylston.

Pedey is too concerned with his hair transplant surgery.

Gomes was honorably discharged.

Carp was reeled in.

The team's chemistry sucks with AJ.

WMB no longer had the excitement from his secret gf.

Vic got s*** on by 3 birds.

Nava took so much growth hormones that his feet no longer fit in the glass slipper.

Farrell decided it's easier to manage from the bottom of the standings.

Ben is chaffed from all the motorboating.

The lack of cutie Ellsbury has caused the pink hats to become bored with the Sox.

Doubront is fat and happy.

Buchholz's fat baby has caused irreparable damage to his shoulder.

It's like you're not even paying attention anymore!!!
