I wouldn't say people have been blaming Drew for the poor results, more questioning the signing and his inclusion in the lineup when he clearly wasn't ready.

I can see us making a decent trade in the ideal scenario of the Holt/XB/WMB trio working out somehow in the middle third of the season. So long as Drew doesn't continue to stink at the plate, he could be a decent piece for a contender (regardless of if the sox are 'sellers'). We're not paying him more than he would have signed for with someone else if yit weren't for that pesky draft pick and the sox can eat a bit of it if needed to sweeten the deal.

Still not saying we should write him off, far from it but it's becoming increasingly clear that Drew isn't ready to hit in the majors again. Other than the fact that he was using up a roster spot there really isn't much claim that he should be in Boston at this stage.

Another first baseman down, I'd expect to see him get a few more games at first.

Very much depends on how he does at AAA where I think he can expect to be by the end of the month if he keeps going even close to how he has been. -
Obviously the usual caveat about sample size but Drew has only managed an infield single during his three games at Pawtucket. Obviously that's. It to write him off but he's not exactly making a strong argument that he's major league ready. Are the Sox on a limit as to how long they can keep him there? I'd like to see him get a few more games and hits under his belt before he takes over from (currently) our best hitter.

Drew is on the roster because he signed a major league contract. When he's ready to play, Holt will be on his way back down and I think it will be Workman who comes up. Not sure about his last two starts but RDLR apparently forgot where the strike zone was after his hot start.

QOs only apply to players who've been with the team for the entire season so Drew wouldn't qualify. I think someone signed on the second day of the season this year just so they wouldn't be tied into a draft pick if they were offered a QO at the end of the year.

I'm all for giving he young guys their shot but I think this move probably came at the right time. I'm not sure how long we can play badly in the hope WM and XB find their groove. And waiting until after, or even much closer to, the draft would certainly be risky/costly. I still think with Will and Xander we have two players with higher ceilings, lower salaries and more years of team control so I'm still holding out hope we don't trade WM. Also, do Herrera and/or Middlebrooks have options left?

The talk of retiring is just a ploy to re-negotiate and a pretty transparent one at that. There's. I reason for him to retire when he has probably at least two years left after the $500k season. As with and pitcher in his late 30s, especially one with an injury history, I'd expect them to put a decent chunk of the money in health based incentives/vesting clauses.

I think you follow the line of looking at what he'd get on the open market; something around 1/17, 2/30, maybe taking a little home town discount; 1/15, 2/28 perhaps, absorbing the extra year and adding a few million to next season as a good will gesture, maybe something around Sizemore's 6mil and if he's so inclined, spreading the money over the length of the contract coming out at 2/21 or 3/34 including 2015. And if that doesn't do it, the trade option should yield a decent return considering his salary. That said I think he qualifies as a 10-5 guy this season, unless the DL season doesn't count against that.

OK so I'll jump right in with my first thread: There's a decent amount of talk that if Lackey keeps pitching well then there's no way he'll be prepared to pitch for the league minimum next season and will be looking to replace that contract year with the first year of an extension. Should he get it? Does he have the right to demand it? Does it make sense for the sox?

Evening all. Just joined up looking to talk sox really. Seems there are a few trolls and at least one concerningly cordial Yankee fan but apart from that, it seems you have a good thing going here.
