You could probably get Garza for just Cecchini + Workman to be honest. Maybe even just Cecchini, considering Garza didn't pitch since July 21, and he had a tough year outside of that.

Maybe Salty would be a better fit for a team that needs a C and is trying to win now, like the Mets for Niese, or to the ChiSox for Floyd (both would have to include more than just Salty).

The Sox certainly have flexibility. If they can sign Haren, they can make one of those 3 moves and have a solid rotation going into 2013, and a very solid lineup.

I wouldn't mind Floyd, I want no part of Niese. Soft tossing LHP give me anxiety attacks

Haren and Floyd/Garza would make me nervous, but if they can do it without giving up too much it is probably one of the better rotations they could have this year. Add a bat or two like they're trying and you're right, the team wouldn't be terrible in 2013. Especially if the above mentioned pitchers did pan out decent and stayed away from the DL.

SFF, how can you be "honest" and honestly think the sox could get Garza for what amounts to nothing? That's completely ridiculous. If he's hurt, he won't pass his physical and a deal won't get done. If he's healthy, he throws 190IP like it's nothing. The Cubs will want a haul akin to what they gave Tampa. And they will get it too.

They aren't getting the same haul they gave up. Garza is now more suspect health wise and controlled for less time then when he was traded the first time. I suggested a Salty-Cecchini-Workman deal. Cubs get a C for the ML team. Something they need. And two top 10 prospects.

The latest twitter noise (Cafardo) is the Sox are "going hard after Napoli."

In other words he hasn't heard anything new and it's 10am on the first day of the Winter Meetings and he hasn't tweeted yet

The Red Sox are closing in on an agreement with Mike Napoli, according to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford. Bradford reports that the deal would likely be for three years. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe had reported earlier this morning that the Sox were "working hard" to land Napoli (Twitter link).

3 years? Win for Cherries if it's true.

Supposedly pretty much a done deal. It's everywhere.

Thoughts? I can't see any draw backs at 3 years? Even if he bombs it's movable or in the worst case only 3 years to get through.

Garza as essentially a rental, isn't going to fetch much in a trade.

The really interesting aspect if true is that clearly it implies that teams (plural) are holding the line on years, something I have suggested would be the case this year. 3 years is clearly not what Napoli was interested in but you would have to believe that if true, nobody offered 4....a good sign for the Sox and baseball generally.

While no financial details have been reported on the deal Napoli and the Sox are working toward, Abraham tweets that it sounds as if Boston paid a larger annual salary to get a three-year contract done, rather than a four-year pact.

I hope it's not 3/60M lol

3/60 would be idiotic but I have also claimed from the start of the off season that teams would do exactly that. That should of course have its limits. I suspect all they did was move a hair past the competition and if the competition pushed Napoli to 20 per annum the whole league needs its head examined.

Napoli 3yrs. Announced tweets, MLB TV. Cafardo has an ear to Lucchino.

Gammons on--says they didn't want to give up draft choice for LaRoche. I think 3yrs is fine for Napoli. Did Gammons just say he was told Sox wouldn't go more than a year or 2 on Hamilton? Didn't catch the team or the player he was referring to.

Baseball HOF being announced right now.

HOF: old timers--Hank O'Day (ump), Jacob Ruppert, Deacon White.

Ruppert was the benefactor of the heist of Babe Ruth and a few other Champion Red Sox to the losing NY Yankees/Highlanders, which some feel was orchestrated by the league to make NY the centerpiece--which it has been ever since.Yankee stadium was built to Ruth's specs.

I like Napoli. I'd like him better if he could play a game here and there at catcher and save us a roster spot, but he should be effective at first base too.

Napoli has always proven that he's a good batting average away from being one heck of a hitter. And this is a ballpark that boosts the batting average of RHH. Sounds like a nice deal to me

Rosenthal on TV--saying the Rangers are the most active team--recorded earlier, I guess.

The Red Sox have made the biggest signing of the meetings so far. good start.

Well 3/39 also suggests there was less interest in Napoli than folks thought there would be. That is also interesting on two scores. Not only are teams holding the line on years but even to some extent on $$.

and

It also suggests that for teams without that friendly left field wall....Napoli did not quite pass the smell test. 3/39 is surely a steal for the Sox...probably would not have been a steal for everybody though...especially teams intending to use him as a catcher.

I am pumped about this deal.

The fact the Sox didn't have to go 4 years on him is fantastic. And $13mm AAV is a steal for a guy who will consistently give you 30-40 HR, a .350 OBP, and a middle of the order, RH bat.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Napoli has an OPS of over 1.000 at Fenway this year, with an OPS of around .850 on the road, .925 overall.

Side note: With Ortiz, Pedroia, Gomes, Napoli, and Middlebrooks, the Sox have a nasty, nasty lineup vs LHP. Which is excellent, considering CC, Price, Romero, Buhrle, etc all in the AL East.

Since this is a year when they are looking for players, the years and the per annum are the best news out of the whole thing.

I think this says something significant about the direction baseball is taking particularly in a year when there are not a lotta' options out there. It is not he richest year for FA's. Yet clearly teams are not jumping all over guys and driving the $$ nutty. I doubt any of the everyday players the Sox are looking at are going to go nutty with the possible exception of Hamilton. I don't think they will offer Hamilton 2 years as somebody will surely offer him 3 if not 4 or 5.

The first major pitcher signing is the next one that should be interesting. I suspect that there is a chance that there is an inverse relationship between what FA pitching will cost and what FA everyday players will cost in a trend that is likely to continue.
