Instead of deciding between Aceves or Bard we should just make it simple.... Leave both out of the starting Five. And take Miller :) sure its a gamble' date=' but hey sometimes in life you just have to take risks :) Anyhow ive said my irrelevant pointless statement for the night. Im off to bed. Night all![/quote']

Miller is on the DL. I have talked about this before in regards to leaving both in the pen. If that is the case, then I think we would have to give Cook a shot. I think he would be a better option than Miller.

Call me crazy but At this point and after watching Doubront this ST, I feel more comfortable with him than with Oswalt. On the other hand nobody has earned the 5th spot, but as some said, Aceves could eat a lot of innings in the BP and hopefully somehow Bard at least give us a 4.5 ERA and 140+ IP. There's no more gentlemen, cross your fingers, and let's support our team.

Let's go Red Sox.

Oswalt would have been a risky move, but in the offseason no one knew that Doubront would do this good. I know there was a lot of hope for Doubront to emerge as a starter, but he is definitely the surprise of Spring Training and I am glad things are finally starting to work out for him. I can't say if he would be a better option than Oswalt, but I do know that he has earned his chance to start for this team. Let's just hope that if Bard is the 5th starter that he can do decent. If he performs better than a lot of us think, we could have a really good rotation one through five. The potential is there, now we just have to wait and see.

Live updates: Red Sox at Twins

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff March 30, 2012 01:02 PM

FORT MYERS, Fla. — We're about to get underway at Hammond Stadium where it's Daniel Bard Steel Cage Death Match Day.

OK, it's really not. But he probably would help himself by pitching well.

Hang out for updates as it's another beautiful sunny day in Florida. Been coming down here for spring training for 12 years or so. There has never been a better spring than this. There's a jacket in the rental car that has never been worn.

First pitch is a few minutes away.

Middle of the 1st: Red Sox 0, Twins coming up: Ellsbury had a bloop single. But Pedroia struck out swinging and Ortiz grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

Top of the 2nd: Twins 1, Red Sox 0: Bard handled Span (4-3) and Dozier (F-7) on eight pitches. Then he walked Mauer on four straight, none of them close. Morneau went 1-1 then hit a foul ball down the line in right that was probably 450 feet. Just strike two. Bard missed in the dirt then left a fastball up that Morneau pounded to left for an RBI double.

Willingham was next and he fouled out to first.

Middle of the 2nd: Red Sox 2, Twins 1: Youkilis flied to center. Salty walked and then Ross launched a deep homer to left. That's No. 5 for him. Sweeney struck out before Aviles singled, the ball deflecting off Blackburn. He was thrown out stealing by about four feet.

Top of the 3rd: Red Sox 2, Twins 1: Strong inning for Bard. He struck out Burroughs and Plouffe looking at sliders. In between, Hughes grounded to third and Youk made a nice play.

Middle of the 3rd: Red Sox 2, Twins 1Pedroia walked with two outs and went to third on a single by Ortiz to right field that deflected off the first baseman. Youk had a chance to drive in a run but grounded into a force.

Top of the 4th: Red Sox 2, Twins 1: Hollimon flied to left. Bard then fanned Span and Dozier then struck out swinging.

Bard is at 46 pitches, 28 strikes.

Middle of the 4th: Red Sox 2, Twins 1: Salty and Ross flied out. Sweeney singled up the middle. Aviles then grounded into a force.

Top of the 5th: Red Sox 2, Twins 1: Mauer singled. Morneau fouled out to Salty, Willingham lined to short (sweet play by Aviles on the dive) and Burroughs struck out looking at a nasty slider.

Ross strikes again (actually twice).

Apparently Ross is a homerun machine right now. Let's hope that bat stays hot for awhile.

Bard's line: 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K.

All and All i think this was his best outing all spring. I feel with this outing he has secured

the 4th spot with Aceves going to the pen.

..and just like that Bard isn't doing so hot now.
At least he worked out of his own jam today with limited damage. That is something that he had not done up to this point of the pre-season.

From what I've read it'll be Dubront 4th and Bard 5th.

That's fine by me as long as they are both effective in their roles. I think Doubront as the

4th would be fine and Bard until comfortable starting more and more is the perfect 5th

guy in the rotation.

True, he still looked great up until that point, and he did get out of a jam.

Now Melancon on the other hand.....

Everytime I turn around, I keep hearing people comparing Cody Ross's swing to that of Jason Bay.

Maybe not 36 HR power, but if he can be 25-30 HR power and hit .255-.265, that would be a huge addition.

Does anybody know if Bard got out of that last inning Jam without letting in runs or was it more that he got the final out of the inning while still having given up a couple of runs?

He certainly hadn't come close to doing that before Ted, but I still wonder if he is really the answer to that 4th spot in the rotation. Doesn't matter what I think, however, since he is going to be it. I wish he could have one more start in ST though just to see if this is progress on his part or whether today's performance was just a tease.

So it looks like Bard and Doubrant for those two spots.

Forsyth, just convince me that Cody didn't use up all his power in Spring Training. He sure has looked impressive with the stick and if he could do those numbers you listed I think he could help the Red Sox get into the tall cotton.

How are you Fred? Everything alright?

If Ross gives us what Bay gave us two years ago, we won't notice Scu's departure that much offensively, regardless Aviles has shown interesting things as well this ST, but I want to see him as everyday player for once and for all.

I like what I have seen from Ciriaco this ST. I think he has earned a spot in the team.
