That's Buchholz for you. Looks better than he is, and can't get out of an inning unscathed or strand RISP to save his life.

When they catch up with the guy, it tends to be very, very hard.

I wish I could trust him, but I have to admit that I spend his outings waiting for him to inevitably leave one up.

If Melancon really is a flyball pitcher like the announcers were calling him, we'll be in for lots of 8th inning heart attacks this season.

Melancon has always been a flyball pitcher. That was the biggest knock on him through the minors was the fact that he relied a lot on his heater up in the zone and would get a lot of flyballs. They were concerned that those FBs in Yankee Stadium would end up in the seats

Doubront had a good day:

6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K. 78 pitches / 53 strikes.

Holy s***. 78 pitches in 6 innings?? 13 pitches per inning is ridiculous. He could have easily gone 7-8 with that. Very well done. Good update, VA - I was curious about his pitch count.

Encouraging isn't it? Wish I could have seen the game.

Glad to see Doubront pitching well. Aceves on the other hand...I don't even really want to talk about it. Let's just say at this point I might be more comfortable with keeping Bard and Aceves in the pen and giving the final two rotation spots to Doubront and Cook (this may just be me talking out of anger). I know that this is just one game that Aceves f***ed up in, but this was also the chance that he had to really prove himself as a starter. This is going to be a tough call. I think Doubront gets the 5th spot, but the 4th spot is up for grabs.

It's weird, isn't it? That we're so comfortable with Doubront already, but we're putting him as the 5th man rather than the 4th man. It's like in March Madness when they have a play in game for the 12 seed.

But I'm in the same boat. I like the idea of a veteran pitcher as the #4 and then make the bullpen a very big strength.

I agree, our bullpen would be really solid. Let's just say I am happy that I am not the one making the decisions. I really do not know what to think at this point. Will Aceves at least get one more start? I know that Bard is scheduled at least one more game this Spring.

It's certainly nice to hear that Doubront looked good but I try to keep in mind that this is a ST split squad game. Nice to see him pitch economically in any case.

At least the bullpen isn't looking terrible. If one of Bard or Aceves stays in the pen, the late innings shouldn't be so bad. Hopefully the rotation can hold it down though.

Does anyone else think a performance like this from Aceves was inevitable? I recall a few "sweaty hat" games in '11 where he completely lost control. He's always been better out of the 'pen and that's where he should stay.

Agreed.

Damn. Lavarnway is going to be a special player when he finally gets called up. And that should be this season. I don't think his defense is much worse than Saltys at all.

Holy crap. Bautista missed that slider by 4 feet!!!

That was pretty funny!

Maybe it is just a small sample size. I saw him last year during his cup of coffe. But Lavarnway looks like a "Natural" hitter. What do you think SFF?

To be honest - the ball jumps off his bat a lot like ARod. When I say that, I mean that when he hits the ball, it looks like it's just going to be a lazy pop up, and the ball just carries and carries on him. Tons of power, and it's very smooth, effortless power.

Bard looking shaky now.
