All hands on deck.....call up Franklin Arias. How much worse can he do than Durbin?

He could look like early season Durbin and not get to June/July Durbin until next season or maybe not ever.

Have we not been paying attention to elite prospects who come up and stink? (not singling you out this seems to be a prospect phenomna amongst fans) even often when they turn into mlb regulars it's very common to hit that wall at the MLB level.

What makes Arias so special? Moncada was the #1 prospect in baseball, Mayer was the #4 prospect in baseball. Heck Bogaerts was the #1 prospect in baseball or maybe it was #2 and he was very pedesterian for his first 1.5 years.

And, we've all seen how a kid can take massive steps back in his development when he is rushed too fast and asked to do too much.  Look at Kristian Campbell? I firmly believe you bring up a prospect when he is ready for the bigs and not when the team needs a guy.  If you want to mitigate those disasters then it's time to start approach player development from their side of things, you work on their timeline and if they're not there yet you go outside the organization and get a guy.

Arias is 20 and was in Portland just last week.  Could he be elite and the exception? absolutely, but a stat line and a prospect ranking isn't proof that he's that guy.

But to answer your question I suppose one must ask which Durbin you are talking about? April-early June Durbin and Durbin now? because if it's Durbin now the answer he can be much much much worse than him.

Bogaerts was called to the majors when he was 20 and helped Boston win a ring that year.

Devers was called to the majors when he was 20, went deep off a future Sox closer throwing 103 mph, and had a pinch-hit game-winning single in the World Series when he was 21.

Every player is different, and no one could fault the Red Sox for promoting or paying Campbell, the kid who the entire industry named as Minor League Player of the Year (though a lot of us did question his skills as a 2nd baseman).

I'd hang on to Arias, who looks like an above-average shortstop and hitter. But after the Mead disaster, if the Sox really want to go for it they now need to trade for Hunter Goodman if available. I'd trade Eyanson and never look back, because a starting pitcher -- even the All-Stars -- only play every five days... but a legitimate 40 home run threat anchors the heart of the order every single game.

Sonny Gray Has pitched towards the top of the rotation

Ranger Suarez pitching at the top of their rotation

Jake Bennett - traded for him, rookie who is stepping it up and looking like a future fixture in our rotation.

I think most people would be very hard pressed to ever find a GM/CBO who ever had an offseason where they went out and added 3 really good starters to their rotation.

But then he added

Durbin - what started off ugly is now paying dividends, he's play 3B at a GG level and has since June 1st is 4th amongst all MLB 3B in War

Contreras - Has been gold at 1B, our best offensive player this year

What positions didn't he fill that people want to fill now? Catcher, LF, SS? Narvaez looked like an allstar in the making after last year, we had a guy called Duran slated to play LF and Story/Mayer at SS. All who have seriously underperformed or got hurt.

There's plenty of critism to go around, but Breslow probably had one of the better offseasons any executive has had in recent memory.  How many teams have added 3 great starters and two position players who are playing at an elite level at their positions in one offseason? What more could we really of asked for?

If everything wrong with a team could just be fixed in one offseason we'd see a lot more teams like the A's and Rockies competing more often.

There was serious questions about Campbells swing amongst scouts as well.

Are you implying that Durbin is not a goodplayer?

This does not make it look any better for Breslow who keeps getting bamboozled and mishandling Red Sox talent and assets.

Get him OUT ASAP!

So you want Breslow fired because Mead got hit by a pitch?

He wasn’t all bad. No GM is. But if you look at the team’s record under BresLOW and its unfilled needs his performance is unacceptable.

Everyone knew we needed another top notch hitter. We didn’t get one and as a result we are last or nearly last in runs scored and HRs. That unfilled piece would have completed the team.

Since some of the pieces he got actually started hitting this team has been the best team in baseball.

Unacceptable? again name one offseason where a GM added 3 really good starting pitchers to a rotation and two good position players (1 if you don't wanna put Durbin there yet).????

If you can't answer that question you're effectively saying Bres"LOW" is a bad POBO because he didn't do what no one else can do.

He didn't do the job. That is the bottom line. I don't care what anyone else did. This team needed at least one more good offensive weapon and it was Brewlows job to find one. He failed.

Yup. We had a torrid streak. Think it will continue? Last year I was satisfied to MAKE the playoffs. This year we could have competed for a ring if our GM had done the job.

Again you fail to address the fact that Breslow had great offseason.  Gray/Saurez/Bennet/Contreras/Durbin now.....even the lesser roster pieces have done really well for their roles E.G. Moran/Watson/Guerrero/Monasterio.

When has a GM ever added that many quality players in one offseason?

The offense has been fine for the past two months, and he's been adding offense at the deadline.  The team has been the best team in baseball for almost two months now.

The good stretch started on June 25th. It really hasn't been 2 months. They did lose 2 games in COL and were 14 games under on June 24th.

When the HR ticked up the runs ticked up, and the wins shot up.

So when the players started hitting, the team got better.  Same players that struggled before.

Not sure that’s the fault of the CBO…

Everything ticked up.

Since June 25th they're.

15th in HR

7th in Runs

9th in BB%

16th in SLG%

Those numbers aren't eye popping, but they're average to slightly above across the board.  Which is good enough when you have elite pitching and defense.

Well said. All the Red Sox needed was a little extra boost on offense.

And when the players he acquired (and some vets) started hitting, this became a top ten offense.  The Sox are 7th in runs scored in MLB since June 25th, which is where they were last year after trading Devers.

What was the fault of #12 bresLOW was that another productive bat was needed from game 1 of the season, and they might not of dug themselves such a hole of 14 games under 500 to begin with. What bresLOW did outside of that was better than good.

Also Roman Anthony, who inarguably proved he at least deserved a chance to play every day…

They had a player that needed to play every day, but was sitting on the bench. If they traded Duran for prospects and started Masa every day, they would have been better off for it.

You think, "little a" deserved it just because he had exit velos and hard hit rates that rivaled the best hitters in the game while showing great patience at the plate? That's the guy you see as deserving of holding a bat every day? 🤔

Yes from Roman Empire to little Anthony. I agree.

I agree, and IMO both Masa, and Duran got off to bad starts being in, and out of the lineup. At the very least it didn’t help.

Agreed, and to me, keeping Duran was insurance for an OF injury or a sophomore slump from Anthony.
