Cynicism…

Realism, if you go by past Sox pitchers that go on the IL.

Sandoval & Crawford were both due back last season.

Hendriks was expected back before his second season and never came back.

Oviedo was signed healthy, as was Gio, but that more about luck than longevity on the IL.

TBF, Buchholz probably just did have a boo-boo and missed 90 days. He did get IL'd for napping while holding his baby.

TBF that baby was 9 1/2 lbs at birth.

Healthy pitchers don’t drop their arm angle.

Untrue, especially these days with how pitching departments change arm angles based on certain metrics.

I disagree.  I can’t think of a top pitcher coming off a Cy Young worthy season who dropped his arm angle to improve.  The angle drops because they are damaged.  Dropping the arm angle flattened out his pitches, reducing his effectiveness.

i knew that he was in trouble when the announcers were talking about the significant drop in arm angle.  It was only a matter of time.

Chris Sale's arm angle is flatter since going to ATL than it has ever been and he's arguably been healthier.

Was it the arm angle that made you think Crochet was injured, or the additional IP last year and his terrible ST and mediocre to bad regular season this year?

Is Payton Tolle injured now that his arm angle is much flatter this season?

You may not believe it, but pitching dev does work on adjusting arm angle.

They greatly increased his IP last season and just figured it'd be fine. Ridden hard and put away wet.

Seems like 1 poster on here this past offseason wondered how the heavy workload for the first time last year would affect this season. I guess we found out.🤔

His right arm is a foot longer than his left from all the self-back-slapping.

Sale is not a good example, because his arm angle is lower after having suffered long term injuries.  The lower arm angle is probably to take stress off of a high mileage arm.

Tolle is not a good example because he is searching to become league dominant.  He hasn’t changed his arm angle after dominating the league.  You don’t change what is working in a dominant way.  The moment Crochet’s arm angle changed his pitches flattened out and he sacrificed depth on his breaking stuff, according to the radio announcers.

Crochets change of arm slot didn’t enhance his stuff.  It diminished it — his velocity, his break etc.

From the article:

Pitchers, like Garrett Crochet, who lowered his arm angle during his breakout 2024 season, and again during his excellent follow-up last season, to great success.

This drop in angle this year resulted in diminished velocity and less vertical movement.  Coincidence?

From what I've read, a drop in angle results in lower velocity, but higher spin.  I think the more pertinent question is whether or not this was deliberate or forced as a result of an injury.
