He became a FA, so it was up to him, too, although I never heard we made him an offer.

One other important factoid: we recieved two comp picks for losing him to free agency:

Ellsbury and Lowrie

We later traded Lowrie for Melancon and Melancon for Brock Holt.

We later got Michael Kopech as a comp pick for losing Elsbury to free agency, and he was a key part of the Sale trade.

I think I'm glad it worked out like it did.

That being said, I loved that Nomar trade and actually predicted it would lead us to a ring.

I ABSOLUTELY feel subtracting Nomar for OCab was the main cog in us winning it all.

The day I heard of the trade, I knew OCab was a plus defender at SS and told my family, the trade was going to win us a ring. They asked who we trade for and I said Orlando Cabrera. They said, "Who?"

Cabrera had a great short Red Sox career.

Yes. And SHOULD HAVE been longer.

I really DGAF who he hit on.

Kinda hard to carry on a team with 2 players in the same clubhouse.

Word I heard was he was hitting on multiple teammates wives. He did not play all that great after that year, and his D declined, too.

O CAB after 2004:

In the last six years of his MLB career, Orlando Cabrera was a starting middle infielder on five other division champions...

... including the final four in a row for four different clubs.

He may have worn out his welcome quickly, but contenders were always ready to recruit him. History can't dispute the fact that on the field, OC was a winner.

And off the field, he was apparently an a-hole.

Chicago couldn’t wait to get rid of him after trading Jon Garland for him.  They got themselves a player who willingly threw teammates under the bus and called the official scorer during games to question calls against him…,

Papi would never!

For years we always heard and regurgitated the Mantra "we can trade hitting for pitching, we can trade hitting for pitching"

And I believed in that.  So shouldn't it also be true that we can trade pitching for hitting?

If it takes one of Tolle/Early to get a solid infielder then so be it.  We will still have one of those guys + Harrison, Crawford, Bennett, Witherspoon, Valera, Phillips, Eyanson +

The pitching in the organization will be fine, go out and get a guy.  The big league club desperately needs it.

So… Tolle for Shaw?

That's pretty close in value, a slight underpay according to BTV.   But I wouldn't hate that.

His name was redadacted in any reports during investigations, and his face blacked out in all photograpical evidence. So he must be exonerated.

Even his baseball cards have been altered; the only clues are the initials OC, which assassination theorists have linked to Oswald and Cuba.

What if Shaw is just a guy who never hits in MLB and remains a below average fielder. That exit velo is scary. I would expect some improvement elsewhere.

My son has a pretty good swing that registers 85 mph exit velo on HitTrax.

But he's 14 and doesn't do it for a job...

(though I pay the amateur minimum for his lessons).

His milb numbers look much better.  He was a newbie, he's young.  I'd be much more concerned if it continues.

He's not hitting with a wood bat either.

Mayer came up and struggled, but was still hitting the ball hard. Just to dip that far for a full season is worrying to me.

The problem with going with a Mayer/Shaw IF is that there is a lot of risk that those two guys just aren't fully developed and will still take time to get there. Are they just leaning back into a youth movement? If so, might as well deal an OFer and call up KC too.

Alex Gonzales, Lowrie, Iglesias and Scutaro were good enough though.

I'd say they're holding onto him to get through ST, but he's heading off to the WBC.

His numbers are brought down by a disastrous first half, too. His second half OPS of .839 at least created an argument for him…

I hadnt even made the Tsung Cheng / Shang Tsung connection (but I like it)

I was just responding to Julio Lugo getting called a soul stealer, and I know Shang Tsung was a soul stealer because he stole Liu Kang's brothers soul in a horribly short-sighted move because it caused Liu Kang to get off the sidelines and enter the tournament.

As the saying goes, let sleeping dragons lie.
