We are all sending $8 million to Chicago.

i call this a win, and it clears out two roster spots.  And this is before the return is announced

I like this move, a lot, but I was never too high on Sandlin.

My like or dislike can change depending on who we fill the two roster slots with and if the money saved is spent of pocketed.

This 8 million dollars subtracted from the 2026 Payroll maybe going towards a Eugenio Suarez Contract????

It's $6M a year on the AAV saved, I suppose.

Out of options Moran and Watson just saw their chances of being on the opening day roster increase, but we may be adding a RPer and 3B/2B soon.

This trade has the TOTAL MAKINGS of precluding another one.

I didn’t think the Red Sox could find anyone to take Hicks off their hands, but they did, and it only cost them $8M. Chicago must of wanted the Sand Man real bad to take on Hicks, and his remaining salary.

Yes, and Sandlin was once thought of rather highly. BTV has him worth $5.5M.

Maybe they also think Hicks can do something better than what they have.

I doubt they opened those two 40 man slots to prematurely add Romero, B Ward or Thaiss to the 40.

It could very likely mean we are signing or trading non 40 man players for a 2B/3Bman and RP'er. It could also be a one for two type trade like Abreu for Paredes + B King, or even Wilyer Abreu for Paredes, Sousa & Bryan Abreu.

Sandalin was who I was thinking they'd need to attach to get rid of Hicks. I can't say I know anything about the prospect coming back, but pretty good reports online.

Surely, at least one of those 40 places is going to be spent on a bull pen arm.

I understand Sand Man, but for a team going nowhere I don’t understand Hicks. Hicks was decent at one time, but like I said Chicago is going nowhere.

They did clear two 40 man roster spots…

They took Hicks to get Sandlin for basically nothing and for a wild card.  If Hicks bounces back, they deal him in August for even more prospects.  If not, they only paid him $4mill anyway…

I guess they don't mind burning a little money to get a hopeful "suspect."

Now, who can we part with to get them to take Masa?

Drohan, Mullins & Masa plus $18M for a couple used bats?

Danny Coulombe and Luis Rengifo.  You heard it here first ,

Hicks is owed $24M/2. We are paying $8M.

Yes, assuming they can trade him at the deadline without paying anything, it might just cost them $3-4M. Good point.

The AAV does not matter to them, but it matters to JH, so that is one aspect of the trade.

Trying to get a team like the Mets to take Masa would mean they pay the remaining Masa money plus a tax. Deals to teams like the CWS might be more likely.

(I doubt we trade Masa, but I doubted we'd trade Hicks, too. I was admonished for even suggesting it, just weeks ago.)

I was just about to post this! I was going to say Wilson or Coulumbe + Rengifo.

I could see us trade prospects for Donovan (est $5.8M arb) which is almost exactly what the Hicks trade saved!

Then, we sign Wilson and stay under tax line 3.

I'm good with Coulombe. Renfigo less so, but he had a decent '23 and '24. Possibility of going one year deal, too.

Donovan just doesn't make sense to me as leftie.

I felt the same way for a while, but he's pretty good, and we still have Romy. Of course, I'm not for platooning Donovan, but we do have a good RHB on the bench. He may be needed more to platoon with Masa at DH or Mayer at .... eek!... 3B.

Donovan has pretty bad career splits vs LHPs (.651) and it was .614 in 2025.

Baty is a LHB, too.

I still like Paredes best, and Matt Shaw is a RHB.

Nobody is talking RHB E Tovar, and he has reverse splits but is over .700 vs each side.

Who is next tier? E Suarez or Vientos?
