It's really bizarre to hear RS fans (whose team dealt/released/drove out two All-Star players, one an MVP, [not to mention losing Bregman] getting absolutely nothing in return) deride other front offices for not knowing what they're doing.

But I didn't really say that.  Pitt and the Reds have drafted well, but are too afraid of making a mistake to trade anyone.  And the Angels and Rox are just bad, bad front offices.

Sorry.  I realize I was stretching what you said.  But at least for me, the RS would be a much more enjoyable team if they had followed suit.  I'd love to be watching an infield of Devers, Betts, and xander, even if it meant giving up all the WS wins we've had since trading Mookie.

Those three guys had a combined 11 bWAR for a combined $95M, and still have another $685M in liabilities to go, and their average age is about 32.  I liked them all, but we'd be finished for the next 6 years had we kept them.

Again, even at the cost of the greatness the RS have shown in the last 5 years, I'd rather be watching these guys and even add Beni or Vaz year after year than the sometimes highly paid Rent-a-Wrecks they got to replace them. My sense of well-being does not depend on 'my' team winning championships or saving money for ownership.  I didn't stop following the RS in the 50s and 60s because they sucked or had bad xWAR or cost that racist f*ck Yawkey too much.  I stayed with them because I had a rough idea of who would be playing from year to year and could follow their careers, good and bad.  I realize this may make me subject to the criticism that I'm 'disloyal' to the team,  'not a real fan', or that I just 'don't know anything about baseball or the modern sports business'.

Haven't heard much pining for Bogey, lately.

You’ve made this statement several times already, so good for you.

I get what you are saying 100%. If things follow suit Sox fans better enjoy the Mayer’s, and Anthony while they are young, and somewhat affordable, because they most likely will be gone when they can become FA.

Well, at least Anthony will be around for a few extra years.

Not necessarily. He probably won’t stay in Boston his whole contract.

Anthony has a 9 year contract, if you count the 2034 club option season. I think he turns 30, his last control year. Seems perfect, to me.

Mayer has not been extended for a reason, and if your term "suspect," which You’ve made this statement several times already, so good for you, was ever true, it is for Marcelo.

I’m not assuming Anthony will finish out his 9 year contract in Boston myself, which sounds about right to me. I’m also far from being the only one who calls Mayer a SUSPECT even if they don’t use that exact word.

You do realize I was agreeing with the use of the word "suspect" for Mayer.

You aren't "the only one:" I am one, too.

I'm not sure anyone outside of the Padres org and Bogey's family liked Bogey's contract at the time it was signed.

Now it’s only Bogey, and his family.

Nobody I remember liked it here.

It's his performance after he left I'm referring to. Had he done great, we'd still be hearing how we botched the early negotiations and how he would have taken $___ or $___.

You’re right, and there would have been nothing wrong with that.

Not at all.  I like rooting for the same guys each year, but free agency has made that difficult.  And I have been spoiled.  I would like another WSC or two before I move on.  Keeping good players at a huge cost won't do that.  The three B's are likely on the downhill slide, and have another 23 years combined years left on their contracts.

Welcome to the MLB.  You have to get use to the fact that players want as much money as possible.

If I was an MLBer, I'd just want to play for Sam. Such a great guy! I wouldn't need a no trade clause or anything.

He might be the one we keep all the way through.

If he has a career ending injury.

I liked the Padres/Bogey contract because it made me feel better that we didnt land him because we were never going to compete with that offer.

Like when you ask out the cute blonde who smiles at you in math class, and she says no, and youre surprised, then you see her walk down the hallway holding hands with captain of football team. You feel better about your miss.

I get hugely attached to our players, and I hate to lose them in free agency.  That said, IMO, that's the way to go.  Enjoy them when they are young and somewhat affordable, but you have to let them walk if their free agent contract is going to be outrageous, which is typically the case.

Hopefully, by the time our young stars are ready to walk, the next group of young stars is ready to take their spots.  In a perfect world, there'd be a never-ending revolving door of players like Betts and Anthony.

Also, I'm all about the better value player over the better player, mainly because I'm so opposed to those large contracts.
